“Very good, simple catering in a very tired establishment”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

Our two breakfasts and dinners were very good, in this very tired establishment. The serving staff were excellent.

At dinner, the meals were simply prepared and presented and were very filling.

It was just a pity about the eyesores outside on the property.

“Probably the worst meal in a long time....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

Sorry to be writing this but we have not had such an awful food experience at this price in a long while - the place itself is drab and dated (umbrella plant and dried grasses as "decor" in the dining room, plastic bound menus falling to bits - you get the picture) and pretentious - you get asked to sit on plastic sofas in the cramped little lounge while your order is taken and prepared. There was a long list of fish under "catch of the day" on the blackboard but the young man taking our order couldn't confirm whether the fish was freshly caught - or much else.... we asked how the scallops were cooked and were told "you get about 6 or 7". Sweet but useless. The food was anything but sweet - rubbery mushrooms in cheese, and gloopy crab cakes, followed by scallops (7 of them) drowned in white wine and onion sauce (!) and a soggy selection of mixed veg on the side. Monkfish tails were in soggy batter. The wine list was dull (on laminated card provided by the importer) with only the house wine available by the glass. We should have trusted our instincts and left before we got out of the car - the fact is that in Uist there's nowhere else to go, but even so we wish we had.
Sorry, but this was not what we are used to for over £60 - hopefully others have a different experience.

Difficult to know where to start with this one. How can you trust the opinion of someone who does not know the difference between plastic and leather? We don't have a plastic sofa in our hotel. He/she seems to have been hacked off that they were asked to sit in the lounge while the order was taken and the food prepared. Nothing pretentious about that, just good management, which assists us in keeping things running as smoothly as possible.
The description of the food is wildly inaccurate. What does the comment 'sweet but useless' refer to? We are completely at a loss as to how to cook mushrooms to make them rubbery. The crab cakes actually consist of 80% white crab meat and are firmly constituted before being dressed in breadcrumbs and cooked. Gloopy??? The scallops, along with the crab cakes, are among our most popular sellers and fresh veg (not soggy) is not served 'on the side' but on a separate dish. The chunks of monk fish tail are dipped in egg and coated with breadcrumbs (like the crab cakes) and again are a popular choice. Where does the 'soggy batter' come from?
We are happy with our choice of wines, chosen in consultation with our wine merchant and presented in the same style as many other hotels.
What really puts this review into perspective is the statement that 'the fact is that in Uist there's nowhere else to go'. That statement, like the review is completely inaccurate.

“Wonderful food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2013

We did not stay at the Orasay Inn but had the pleasure of enjoying two dinners at the restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious, very generous portions and to our delight the menu takes full advantage of the wonderful local seafood. We had many delicious options to choose from and it was hard to decide!!!

“Excellent.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

We had two meals in the restaurant and each of them were excellent.
The scallops are fabulous as is the lobster.
On our second visit we had fillet steak which is from local herds and the veg is also grown locally.
The service was first class and the stunning view from the dinning room made everything perfect.

Good food expertly cooked.

Highly recommended.

“Temper your expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Having read all the 'rave' reviews about the food we were looking forward to a nice meal. If what you are looking for is generous portions, plenty of choice and a good selection of fish and other seafood then you won't be disappointed.
However, based on other reviewers' comments the experience and food fell short of our expectations. At best this was average food and rather expensive for that.
Whether we caught the restaurant in an 'off' night we don't know. Therefore if you go you pay your money and you take your chance!
