“A bit of a let down”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

We had taken a week's caravan holiday in nearby Lochboisdale & had eaten at two other nearby hotels which had been great but we felt we'd have our final meal on the island in The Borrodale. At first, from the car park I wasn't even sure the hotel was open but on trying the reception, the lady behind the desk welcomed us in. We sat in the bar area & ordered our drinks which were served fairly promptly. The young lady that was behind the bar was friendly enough but was texting on her phone in between taking our order which was a wee bit rude! Our meals were ok but were not as well cooked as we had previously enjoyed in other local establishments. We tried to order a second round of drinks mid way through the meal but had to go to the bar as the young lady failed to see our attempts to attract her as she continued to text behind the bar. Whilst we were there the only other people to come in were a few German tourists looking for something to eat so maybe we just hit the hotel at a quiet time & the young girl was just trying to pass her evening away. I wouldn't rush back to eat here as overall I felt a bit let down by the service & avearge meal quality.

Our room was stale, the decor tired and dated. Our "views" were of the flat roof. This hotel is used by workmen. Although most of the staff were friendly and efficient they were sadly let down by shoddy, rude service from others.

Heating off at night and woke up at 5 am to a freezing room and bathroom - not even a towel heater there. Heating came on after 6 am but was still freezing when I left at 7.15 am. A bed was up against the heater anyway so I had to move that too.
As I was leaving early I asked for a continental breakfast - this was sent to my room at 18.15 the night before I left!
I was hungry when I arrived and asked for a roast dinner (small). It came within 10 minutes and looked lovely. the top was warm, underneath was cold with the yorkshire pudding being almost frozen. Nothing was hot. I had to go to a shop to get something to eat after being picked up as I had to eat something before getting to work.

Room Tip: Ask for an electric heater and for your food to be hot. Do not ask for a continental breakfast.

We weren't staying here (we were in a B&B nearby) so review refers only to the restaurant. We had dinner here one night and found the choice wide, the food well cooked and the service quick and friendly. Not especially cheap but then eating out on the islands never is. Anyway, we enjoyed it so much that we opted to return for lunch another day in preference to a second, nearby establishment.

We stayed here for 2 nights in August as part of a party of 14 on an 'Island Hopping' holiday. The hotel welcomed us warmly and the rooms were allocated quickly and efficiently. We had a good room with a pleasant view and full en-suite facilities. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff so when we asked for more milk we were given a jug of fresh milk each night. The meal was efficiently produced and the food was well cooked and presented. All in all, a very positive experience.

The receptionist and breakfast waitress (owner) were both very friendly and helpful. The food at breakfast was superb (porridge, smoked haddock). The hotel has not been refurbished in recent years and is caught in an 80s time-warp (although clean). The restaurant was virtually empty on the Sunday night we were there - we avoided it due to limited vegetarian options.
