This is my 17th year in a row staying on the beautiful Island of Maui in March. We have stayed in West Maui in the past and decided to try South Maui instead because the crowds at Kaanapali are getting overbearing. I read many reviews on Makena Beach and Golf Resort and all were positive so we decided to give it a shot. We arrived an hour or so before check in because we stayed at the Sheraton Maui for three nights (see review on that) and were told that the room was not ready yet. No big deal, but when two hours past check in went by and we were told the room still wasnt ready, I was beginning to get concerned. We finally got checked in to our Ocean Front room and were pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness and spaciousness of the room. This hotel sits fairly fair back from the beach so Ocean Front isnt right on the ocean but it is still an awesome view. You may want to try partial ocean view since I think you will still get a decent view of the ocean at a cheaper price. The hotel was totally boooked but you would never know it. There were no crowds, no pushy tourists, and no screaming kids. I thought something must be wrong but then I saw why. This hotel is the most southern resort that you can stay at in south Maui so it is fairly remote which was perfect for us. We dont have kids and we dont like crowds. I will give my my evaluation of the pros and cons depending on what you are looking for:
Seclusion/Privacy: Absolutely no crowds. Very relaxing beach and beautiful grounds to chill out on.
Breakfest Buffet:-Large selection of food and fresh fruit.
Golf- Makena Golf course is a beautiful golf course that gives guests free club rental. Stop at Cafe on the Green after 18 holes and enjoy great food and one of the best sunsets you will ever see on Maui. Truly Magical.
Beach: The beach is open with very few people on it. Guests snorkle, scuba, kayak and catch the Kai Kanani catamaran right off of the grounds of this resort. Very easy for kids to swim, with little coral or big waves.
Staff: Everyone at this resort goes out of their way to help. Very polite. This includes groundskeepers. Never have I been treated so well by resort personnel.
NO RESORT FEE-Major bonus when you dont have to pay to park or use the gym.
Fitness Center-Plenty of Equipment to get a decent workout in.
Miniature Golf, Croquet, Shuffleboard, Ping Pong, Volleyball on grounds- Never a crowd if you want to do any of these activities.
Small swimming pools- Not great swimming for kids. Pools are 4ft and 6ft deep. No waterslides or lazy rivers. Just round pools.
Restaurants: Pool food ends at 5 so you are pretty much stuck with room service or the Molokini Bar and Grill which is the only restaurant on the grounds that is open after 5pm. Very good food there but options are limited. I would suggest that you rent a car and go into Wailea for more options if you are looking for more of a food selection.
Night Life- If you are looking for party type atmosphere with a lot going on, this place is not for you. After 8pm this resort is pretty much shut down.
Overall: Makena Beach and Golf Resort exceeded my expectations. It was everything I wanted in a trip to Maui. A beautiful resort, beautiful beach, no crowds, and exceptional staff. I honestly cant say enough about my stay at Makena Beach and Golf Resort. I will definitely be back again next year. So relaxing. I can finally say I got to "Hang Loose" in Maui without the hectic crowds disrupting the beauty of this magical island..
