“Fantastic Rural Gite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2009

Domain La Castagne is a selection of 4 self catering gites in the French countryside run and owned by Ruth and Fergus Donaldson. The gites vary in size, the largest sleeping 7 and the smallest 2, and are all on one site.

Many gites are for larger groups, so we were pleased to find one that only slept 2 and was priced accordingly. That said, it was well sized and comfortable with a living/kitchen area, bedroom and shower/toilet room. It was also well equipped, had recently been refurbished and was spotless.

The gites are set in some large grounds with fantastic views of the local countryside and plenty of shady spots for when the sun is out. There is also a lovely swimming pool (well secured should there be young children around) and plenty of space for children to play, including a covered area with table tennis and other games.

The local area has much to offer. There are numerous picturesque towns and villages nearby, with some very good restaurants and local markets. Should you want to visit a city for more varied shopping, art galleries or architecture, then Toulouse is only 30 minutes away, with an excellent undergound rail park and ride service into the centre. Plenty of walking can be had both from the gite and throughout the local area and the Canal du Midi is only a few miles away, offering easy cycling along the tree lined canal.

Ruth and Fergus live in the complex and are excellent hosts. Should you need any help or advice they are always on hand, but are careful to respect your privacy. Their knowledge of the local area is invaluable and can help you make the most of your time there, should you so wish.

Overall, this was an excellent place to base yourselves should you want to relax or tour the local area.
