“What a fun trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

What a great trip! Our SCUBA diving group from Baltimore, Maryland traveled in mid July to Long Island in the Bahamas where we stayed and dove with the wonderful folks at Stella Maris. The resort is beautiful and the rooms are comfortable and spacious. The resort staff and the dive staff are friendly and helpful. The food was excellent, even my daughter who is a very picky eater enjoyed the menu choices. Also the bag lunches that the resort packed us each day to take on the dive boat were very good and no one every got hunger.

The highlights of our dive trip were the day trip to Conception Island, the wreck dive on the Comberbach, the shark dive and diving and snorkeling in Dean's Blue Hole. The trip to Conception Island is a 3 hour boat ride each way but well worth it to dive Conception's beautiful walls. We were even greeted by a dolphin on our first dive at Conception Island. The wreck we dove was sunk on purpose as a dive sight, it is a 110' steel freighter that sits upright on a 100' deep coral shelf with lots of coral, sponge and fish life to enjoy. The shark dive was exciting and set up safely by the dive masters. It will get your adrenaline levels up and give you some good opportunities to see and photograph sharks up close. Dean’s Blue Hole was the last dive of our trip. It involves a one hour bus ride each way to the southern end of the island however, Dean's Blue Hole is one of the most beautiful views you will see in the Caribbean both above water and below. It is also a wonderful snorkeling place. Any trip to Long Island should include plans to see this incredible natural wonder.

The sailing on one of the resorts small sailboats is also must. Wish we had more time to try the kayaking, go fishing, hang out on the beach and explore more of the island but we had to have a reason to return some day. I believe everyone in our group was very pleased! It is and excellent value for the money! Thanks to all at Stella Maris for such a fun adventure!

A couple of things worth noting if you plan to vacation on Long Island. We did a find the gnats and mosquitos to be a problem in certain places at certain times of the day. The locals say they can be annoying for a few days after it rains. Take some bug spray with you just in case but don't change your mind about going to this great little island. My experience is that this is typical of many of the remote locations I have visited. Also, the diving days were rather long. We left the dock each day at 9 AM and returned each day after 3 PM with the trip to Conception Island being the longest day. Stella Maris has two boats and because we were a larger group, we were on the larger but slower dive boat. Although it was not a problem, we just wished we had more time each day after the dives to enjoy more of the amenities at the resort and tours around the island. The plus side is that the larger boat is very comfortable with lots of room to relax and enjoy the view and your day on the water. Stella Maris also has a smaller, faster boat for use with smaller dive groups so that boat ride should be faster and the dive days shorter.

Room Tip: If you are a diver, the hotel rooms in front of the office were very convenient for catching the rid...

It was such a pleasure having your group of divers. So glad you enjoyed your time with us. There is so much to do that we hope you'll be back again to continue your exploration of Long Island.
Yes, larger group means the larger boat which as you say is comfortable, but slower moving. We do try to be flexible to a group's wishes and so a smaller group can lead to a smaller, faster boat.
Thank you for sharing your comments on the Conception Wall, Comberbach wreck, Dean's Blue Hole, and Shark Reef. Did you know that Stella Maris was the first Bahamas operator to offer a shark dive? And the Dean's is world's deepest blue hole and 2nd largest underwater cavern?
Again, thank you and your group of divers for spending time with us and for the great photos.

Visited here, feel in love, bought a lot in Stella Maris and have been dreaming of building there since the visit. The people of Long Island are so welcoming and happy. The stars in the sky, unlimited. The bounty of beauty found in the natural surroundings, words can't describe. You have the pristine beaches with waves on Stella Maris side and a short distance away - zero depth walk-out unlimited possibilities on the Cape Santa Maria side. It's truly the best of both worlds.

Our family of seven spent a week at this beautiful island resort. We rented the four bedroom Dolphin House with its own pool. It had fabulous ocean views (it is right on the ocean) overlooking the salt water pool. It was very comfortable with large bedrooms and a main living space.
We spent three days scuba diving with the resort's scuba crew. We were all newly certified open water divers. The scuba crew started us with a shallow dive and we worked our way up to deeper dives through the week. The resort offers all levels of diving experiences from shallow reef diving to deep water wreck diving and even a dive into Dean's Blue Hole (the deepest underwater sink hole). We saw sharks, manta rays, lobster, squid and more.
We rented a car one day and explored the island, snorkeled at Dean's Blue Hole and enjoyed some of the island's best beaches. One beach not to miss is Cape Santa Maria with soft white sand and clear aquamarine water. A typical day diving is two one tank dives. One in the morning followed by lunch and a new snorkeling site and then another dive after lunch. The dive crew is wonderful at providing a positive dive experience and is very attentive and careful with safety.
The resort is beautiful with lovely landscaping. While two homes have pools, there are at least four other pools throughout the complex of 30+ units. It is peaceful and quiet. There is the Moonshine Bar near the ocean with great drinks and food (one must try their huge daiquiri). The main restaurant has delicious food with evening specials each night. Our last night was the rum punch party with dinner buffet. The staff is friendly and the service is wonderful and very accommodating and helpful. (Note: do not miss the apple German pancake for breakfast).
The resort will also provide trips to get provisions at local stores, plus site-seeing trips, and beach drop-off and pick-ups. There are also bikes available which makes getting to some beaches a lot easier. There are many other excursions available and we plan to return to try some of the ones we missed.
We found Stella Maris to be a wonderful place to relax, bond with our family and enjoy the best of the beautiful Bahamas. A true test of an ideal vacation is when customers return. Stella Maris is that kind of place. We even met a lovely woman who has been returning for 35 years and another couple who had honeymooned here 30 years ago and were returning. We, too, will be back!

Room Tip: We enjoyed having a house, but there are smaller cottages available. All are quiet. Photos are avai...

What a wonderful review, thank you. It is great to hear that your family enjoyed spending time together at Stella Maris. I did my first dive at Stella Maris, as did several relatives and friends over the years - the diving, and snorkeling, is diverse with good sites for all skill levels. We are delighted to know that you will be returning to your new 'Island Home' and look forward to your return.
Sunny regards from all of us at Stella Maris!

Our group of 6 rented one of the homes (Rainbow House) for 3 nights. Each has their own bed/bath. There was an infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The grounds were well kept as well as the house. The resort has a good restaurant and a separate bar near the Ocean as well as one with the restaurant. The staff was very cordial and friendly. A good time was had by all.

We stayed at Stella Maris Resort several times, each time in a different bungalow. This trip we went with 1 other couple and stayed in Rainbow House - it was great! The house had 3 completely separate guest suites, making it totally private for all of us. The rooms were spacious and airy, the great room was exactly that! Though in need of updating (all the houses are privately owned) it was very comfortable, and could indeed be a 5-star property with a little TLC. It was very clean and well-maintained though, and we LOVED the ginormous infinity pool overlooking the ocean - the views are spectacular!
We came in our own Piaggio and the staff couldn't be more pilot friendly, since Joel is one himself. (Check out his Piper Chieftan and the Aero Commander!) Karen, Jill, Peter, Joel all took very good care of us and the chef even cooked the fish we caught when we went deep sea fishing! Every night we looked forward to a delicious dinner and were never disappointed. Favs: Bahamian conch chowder, crab, mahi, and peas & rice.
A few steps away is the private beach, the beach bar (casual lunch and great tropical drinks there too), the resort fresh water swimming pool, and the fitness center. And be sure to take the nature trail and a dip in the natural ocean pool carved out from the rocks. Awesome!
Don't expect the Ritz - you're in the out-islands after all. But a stay at Stella Maris is a joyful experience you won't want to miss!
