My newlywed wife and I decided to go Harbour Island on our honeymoon for a 2 week stay and after quite a lot of deliberation chose the Valentine's Resort.
Well............. Here is the story of my honeymoon!
We arrived at our 1st room with a greeting from ants and no cable or internet. I called the reception desk at 8pm and got told it was all being fixed and someone would come up. I fell asleep at around 11ish still waiting for that person. Now normally on your honeymoon you don't really care about things like internet but we are in the process of buying our first house so this was an extremely important amenity to us.
The next day we moved to a smaller room, which we were not too fussed about as we did not need the 2nd bedroom.
In our new room we had again, ants, no cable, no internet and this time no water! Some would say go down to the pool, well , that was Green! The pool was not available to use for the first 5-6 days of or stay. I say not in use, you could go in but you would have no idea whats in there!
To cut a very long story short, we had no water for 8 out of the 14 days we were there and when we did have it, it was brown/black or luke warm and no pressure.
The internet did not work in our room for the WHOLE stay even though we were assured it was being fixed and that a guy from the US was coming over to fix it, this never happened!
The cable went off everyday for at least an hour at a time which was not really a huge issue as we barely watched TV as it was our honeymoon, but thats not the point.
For the ant situation we were given a bottle of ant spray killer!!!! Not, "No problem sir we will take care of it!"
On around the 8th night our door broke and the key would not let us into our room so we had to wait for around an hour and a half until they could find someone with a master key. That being said we did get free drinks down in the bar because of this, but only down to Chef! The door was not fixed until the following day, so every time we wanted to get in our room we had to wait for someone to let us in.
Now, the water issue was the worst i have ever experienced!! To be on your honeymoon and not be able to shower or wash for the first 3 days is beyond a joke. Again, we were told this was being sorted and the Hurricane was blamed. The funny thing is that the hurricane did not just hit this hotel it hit the whole island, BUT every other hotel we went to was fine and had recovered extremely well from it. If the hotel was not ready from the hurricane then we should have been notified and moved hotels, simple as that!
I must say if it was not for Kurt, Alexis and the Chef i really don't know what we would have done. I spent more time with them than with my newlywed wife.
Just to top everything off, I called a meeting with the manager Dean, for those of you who have met him will know, All talk no action. Promises that everything will be done and be fixed, when in reality on our leaving day 3 out of the 4 main issues were still not resolved. So, I had the meeting with the manager and he was extremely apologetic AGAIN and offered me a 50% discount on my stay and a free vacation on him. Great we thought at least something was being done!! Well, thats again where you're wrong. I went downstairs the next day to speak with Alexis about my discount on the bill. She handed the bill over to me and i nearly hit the floor. My balance was X amount of dollars!!! I told her that we had paid for the trip before we had come and we had no balance and handed her the paperwork we had brought with us. She told us that this was wrong and that i needed to talk to the manager again. Great!
My wife and I then waited in reception for more time wasted of our honeymoon. We got called into Deans office where he told us there had been a mistake and that this was indeed a $500 a night hotel. I tried my hardest not to laugh at this comment after seeing what it was really like.
After going backwards and forwards and showing him all the letters we had received from THEM saying everything was confirmed and paid for he told us that because we got it at such a good price he could no longer do the 50% off and also revoked the free vacation and said lets call it quits!!!!
I could not believe what I had just heard! So because of HIS companies mistake he revoked what he had originally offered us less than 24 hours ago!
Apart from all this the ISland itself is wonderful, not a whole lot of stuff to do, but the beaches and friendliness of locals will take your breath away! Queen Conch is by far the best restaurant on the Island. Definitely hire a car for the day in Eleuthera and drive down to the Glass Window Bridge!! What a sight!!
Again, i just want to say how well Kurt, Alexis and Chef did! We really don't know what we would have done without you, I actually felt sorry for them as realistically, what could they have done, its not their hotel!
My ratings below are based on Service from the people that actual helped us and my Value is based on the $500 a night price!
Bed is one of the comfiest i have ever slept on.
I gave average location as beach was on other side of island and their were no beds
Fitness Center??? Did not see one
Spa- I will class this as pool. First 5-6 days was awful but after that it looked nice but extremely cold.
All rooms are very similar, good furnishings and great views if you have 2nd floor room.

Just days prior to this guests visit, the resort experienced a very large category two hurricane, the same hurricane that devastated the NJ and NY areas. Additionally, due to a booking engine error, the guest paid a total of $871 inclusive of tax for a two week stay. The rates at this time of year for a one bedroom suite at Valentines Resort is $300 per night. With tax this stay should have been priced at $5082. The couple realized nearly a 83% total discount off the published rate, far more than the 50% I had agreed to. We did have severe water supply, internet, electricity, and pool clarity issues due to hurricane Sandy. Those issues are now repaired. Please know our team members did every thing our power to ensure this lovely couple had a good stay dispite the difficulties encountered. Unfortunately we were unable to deliver the experience they were looking for and for that I apologize.
