“Fantastic Bahamas getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2014

This was our first visit to the Bahamas. The hotel is located on a quaint little island called Harbour Island which itself is located off of the Bahamian island called Eleuthera. The beach, which is located steps from the hotel was quite secluded and stretched quite a ways in either direction. There were several similarly (small) sized hotels located on the beach but you felt as if the beach was yours. The hotel had a restaurant which we did not dine at on this trip as we choose to visit one of the many restaurants located on the island. Our room was modern and clean and the bathroom was extremely large. The bed was extremely comfortable. We gave it a 4 because the pullout bed for my younger one was a bit small and uncomfortable. We are the kind of travelers who like to come back to a nice room and this one was definitely nice. There were several cottages that were directly on the beach, our one bedroom was just a few steps away from those, and it looked like they had smaller rooms in a "condo" type setup which were steps away but didn't look as nice from the outside. The hotel had two bars, one inside and one outside which was quite busy for lunch. We had lunch there one day and it was delicious. There weren't a ton of activities associated directly with the hotel (like water sports) but our guess was that you could probably arrange anything you wanted with a phone call to an outside party(fishing, boating etc). We brought our 13 year old who had a blast but he had another 13 year old to hang out with. Drinking age is 18 on the island and there were plenty of bars and clubs.

Room Tip: We stayed in a one bedroom which was steps away from the beach. There were larger cottages which we...

We had our wedding at the Coral Sands hotel. Not only was it the most picturesque beach location in the Bahamas with its beautiful pink sand beaches but the owners and employees of the hotel went out of their way to make sure it was our dream wedding. They accommodated us by booking out the whole hotel with our family and friends for several days and nights for our celebration. They worked closely with us to create an absolutely beautiful itinerary of dinners and events on and off site completely personalized to our liking! They made our entire wedding week an experience we will treasure for the rest of our lives! The Coral Sands hotel is definitely the most pristine hotel on Harbour Island!

The property itself is very airy and has a laid back atmosphere. This is a travel destination for those who are looking to relax and enjoy the most beautiful beach in the world. No sea gulls, no fish, no sea weed, just beautiful, soft pink sand. The resort is very well kept and the rooms are as well. The rooms have a little age to them but are still very relaxing and spotless. We stayed in the loft room and it was a hoot. Other than not having a deck to stand out on we had a better view because our room was above the second floor. The only drawback to our room was the lack of water pressure. We got quite a laugh out of it. The staff at coral sands is amazing. Very attentive and they know everyone who stays there by name. Once you book your stay have them set up your golf cart rental and it will be there waiting for you when you arrive. Harbour Island was the absolute highlight of our Bahamas vacation. If your traveling on a tight budget then Harbour Island is probably not well suited for you. But if you don't mind enjoying your vacation like we do this is a wonderful place to be and the food on the island is absolutely excellent.

Room Tip: Give the loft a try, we loved it.

Thank you very much for your very nice review.

We do tend to agree that Harbour Island has one of the most exquisite beaches in the world.

We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed the Loft, it is a unique room in the entire hotel. I am sorry about the water pressure, as you say, the building does have a little age to it, but we try to make it as efficient as possible.

I will definitely share your very positive comments regarding the staff. They always find it so very satisfying when they get mentioned.

We hope to be able to welcome you back home in the very near future.

If you're going to Harbour Island you have to understand luxury there is a bit more understated.
Beach is truly amazing-we have traveled many places and this is among the best we've ever been to- sugary pink sands, really wide, uncrowded and turquoise waters.
We found most of the staff to be very friendly (bar, beach etc)- but the front desk staff could have been a wee bit friendlier...
We were in either a jr suite or a deliuxe ocien view. The room was very big and great view with nice terrace. it has a space we could put my 2 year old son's crib by the bathroom/closet which was out of eye sight of our bed (which is key as if he sees us he won't go to sleep). It also had a pull out couch which we didnt use. So for the reviews that were critical of the hotel's luxury standard- yes it is not New York or US 5 star - you are on a very remote island- more island chic... but still very nice linens etc.
We checked out Pink Sands and Dunmore. if I had to choose again I might consider Dunmore if I didnt have a child- it is more posh- but also a little more shi-shi/New York but that may not be what you're looking for in an island escape. I would not pick pink sands as the property is much more spread out and tucked into the landscape- at Coral sands the bar/pool/lunch restaurant/main area is all in view of the gorgeous turquoise water which is what you are there for.
A few side notes:
the food everywhere on this island is expensive- defiently check out Landings & sip sip for lunch- but beyond that the food at Coral sands was probably the best.
Pam the manager was great
Roosters, geckos and grasshoppers are all around which my 2 year old son LOVED.
Beach is great for kids- gentle waves and shallow
rent a golf cart and explore the island...
Be prepared to be patient at times- it is definetly Island time ;)

I always find it amazing to read the reviews of our guests. It teaches us so much about what we are doing right or wrong. Thank you so much for the posting.

Also, Thank you very much for your positive comments on our property, we do try to make it as nice as possible, with our obvious limitations of being in a three mile island. I will remind the front desk's staff to do a bit more smiling....they can do it, just need to be reminded.

We hope to be able to welcome you back to our very special place.

When you live in a stresfull city like I do, you always dream of a place where you can achieve that peace that at least I had when I was a child, no obligations, play all the time at least in the summertime, those dreams of my childhood came back when I visited Harbour Island in The Bahamas, we stayed at the Coral Sands Hotel which is a boutique hotel with great ammenities, most specifically a fully stocked bar and an excellent restaurant, the rooms were very comfortable and the peace and quiet atmosphere of the hotel is inspiring, I highly recommend Harbour Island and The Coral Sands Hotel.

Room Tip: We had a room facing east towards the ocean and you can sleep with your windows open because the bre...

Pros: Beautiful beach. Gorgeous turquoise water. Some of the wait staff at the hotel are very friendly. We can always tell that the cleaning staff has cleaned our room every day and do a very good job of it.

Some of the employees who work here are very friendly and eager to help.

Cons: 1. Continental breakfast consists of toast, a croissant, 2 small jelly pastries, jelly, cream cheese if your are lucky and coffee and juice. A bowl of Cereal is $9! We have never been served or even offered water at breakfast while we have witnessed other guests being served. Consistency in what is offered is poor. The first day, my husband ordered sausage to go along with his toast. He received 3 links for $6. The second day, he again ordered the same sausage and only received 2 links.

2. The shabby not shabby chic condition of the room. I expected a little bit more out of the room for what we were paying. This time the beach makes up for it. Next time, I will try somewhere else.

3. Unpredictable hours of the beach bar/restaurant. We waited till 3:30 pm to go order lunch. The beach restaurant closes at 4. I was informed that because of a wedding the restaurant had closed down early. I went ahead and ordered drinks at the bar, where the bar attendants were not very friendly. No one informed me that the bar would be closing before 5pm because of the same wedding. My husband went back to the bar at 4:00 and was informed in a bit of a rude manner that the bar was closed because of the wedding. NO where was it posted or were we informed that the beach restaurant and bar would be closing early. My husband went to the main house to see if by chance they had opened the bar there earlier to serve the numerous other paying guests that were not part of the wedding party. He was informed that that the beach restaurant and bar had been closed due to the wedding. No apology was offered. The person then walked off.

Dear Runnerchick 79,
I am sorry that you had cons associated with your stay at Coral Sands. We try very hard for all of our guests to be satisfied.
I will try to respond to your three points:
1. Continental breakfast: We do serve complimentary continental breakfast to our guests consisting of a bread basket, coffee and juice. I apologize if no water was served. As to the sausage, I will bring it up to the attention of the Food and Beverage Manager so it will not happen again to any other guests.
2. We try to make sure our rooms are up to or exceed the guest's standard. I am sorry if you felt your room did not meet with your expectations. I don't know which room you are referring to.
3. Our Beach Bar is open from 11:30 am to 5:00 p.m daily. We did close the Beach Bar last Saturday for a private function. The General Manager did send out notices the night before advising of the early closure. I apologize if this notice did not get to you. We will make sure that in the future we not only give notice but will post signs of the early closure so that it is visible to all our guests.

We hope you come back to Harbour Island and give us a second chance.

We were at the Coral Sands for a one-night, two-day getaway from Nassau, and had an overall fantastic experience. Here were the high points for us: Champagne on arrival while we checked in, beautiful common areas – especially the Beach Bar and verandah where breakfast was served, the complimentary wifi in the rooms, the wooden umbrellas and drink/food service on the beach, friendly and helpful staff (especially at the front desk), and the most important thing for us – the location being right on the stunning pink sand beach.

As for the room, it was fine, the bed was very comfortable, and we had a large terrace with a view of the water. But it also felt small, outdated, and in need of some renovating– particularly the bathroom. A few weeks prior to our stay at Coral Sands, I stayed in a hotel in Washington D.C. that cost about 25% of the price of the room at Coral Sands, and it was much more contemporary and spacious. But at Coral Sands, what you’re really paying for is the location, which really can’t be beat. We wanted to be right on the pink sand beach, and that’s what we got. Because of that and the very friendly and helpful staff we met, we would definitely stay here again and have recommended it to friends.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. It is very important to all the staff at Coral Sands to make sure that all guests leave feeling the way you did about Coral Sands and Harbour Island.

As to the rooms, I am suspecting you stayed at one of the rooms in the main building. We are in the planning stages of remodeling all the rooms in the main building during our yearly closure.

Please come back and visit us!
