We recently visited The Landing and loved its island charm, character and the very friendly staff. It is a pretty little spot that exudes old-world style and laidback elegance. Having said that, it is quite casual in terms of its amenities. We must stress that all of the staff is wonderful and that our comments are not reflective of their hard work and efforts.
Firstly, our room. Though it room had an ice bucket, it was empty - never full or replenished - our entire stay. We found this odd considering that room service delivered a bottle of "fresh" (and warm) house water each day. The toiletries were packaged in Gilchrist & Soames bottles and we have used these products at many other resorts. The brand could have recently changed its formulations and that would be the only way to explain the medicinal-smelling, disinfectant-like unctions that were presented as Gilchrist & Soames. There is only one room service visit per day (in the morning), which may be in keeping with the laidback atmosphere at The Landing, but isn't especially convenient for the more than once-a-day sand- and sunscreen-removing shower that an island destination can demand.
Secondly, convenience amenities. The hotel is a pleasant 10-minute walk from the beach, which is nothing short or breathtaking. There is a designated area for Landing guests and beach chairs, but not enough umbrellas to go around. If we arrived at the beach late morning, as we did one day, all of the umbrellas were taken and we had no option for shade (even if we had to rent an umbrella from the hotel, we would have preferred that to no shade). There is no beach bar anywhere on the 2.5 mile stretch of beach - which we liked as it kept the beach unspoiled - but there is also no help from the hotel when it comes to beach necessities such as water. You soon realize you have to find a store that sells water (or beer or fruit or snacks) and shop for refreshments before you hit the beach then try to enjoy them while they are still cold. It would be nice for The Landing to offer a small, handheld cooler in each room or at the hotel so guests can fill them up on their way to the beach or have them filled up by the hotel. They also do not serve lunch, which is fine but we only found this out when we returned to the hotel from the beach to eat lunch. Not a big deal as there are plenty of places that do serve lunch, but if we had known, it would have saved us the walk back.
Overall, this is a nice hotel, the staff is wonderful and the beach is one of the most spectacular in the world. I wouldn't tell anyone not to stay at The Landing, I would just tell them not to expect full service in terms of amenities or an overview of what's on offer. Management seems a bit too laidback when it comes to these things, but the location and staff do make up for it.
