“Anything but Middle of the Road!!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

By word of mouth tried this restaurant, the rave reviews from friends did not do it justice, this restaurant produced some of the lovliest food I have seen since leaving the USA. The homemade bread was to die for, so light it melted on the tongue, the 26 day matured roast beef dinner was plentiful, fresh, the roast potatoes were the best ever, spiced and lovely and roasted. When it came to the puddings, well nothing short of extraordinarydescribes them, the presentation was fantastic and friends that were with us thought it was the plate that had the decoration, yet it was all fancy gelwork, a true work of art. This restaurant sits in the middle of Dumfries and Castle Douglas, 9 miles from each. One would pass this without a second notice in the small town of Crocketford, yet I telling everyone I meet it is the best restaurant as far as food presentation I have seen since leaving the states....a must try!!!! You will not be disappointed.

Stayed in the Galloway arms in August with my husband and 2 kids. Very dated, musty smell upstairs. My dinner was inedible. Served our food in the bar where a group of young people who looked underage came in for a drink (thankfully they waited for just one). Another group came in and played pool beside us. Not suitable atmosphere for serving food to a family with two young kids. At breakfast the sausages were off. On checking out we had a good view into the kitchen where there were loads of slices of bread left sitting out on a shelf.
Our overall our experience of Scotland was excellent, kids can't wait to go back on condition that we steer clear of the Galloway Arms.

We often pass by this hotel/restaurant as we live locally, but we had never been in for a meal. It looks welcoming with cheery flags outside however its very drab and dingy inside.
We ordered our meal - two roast dinners -when they arrived they were unpalatable.
The menu was extensive, plenty of choice so we were really looking forward to our meal but it was swimming in gravy, very flat yorkshire puddings and plastic tasting roast beef. The mashed potatoes tasted like 'smash'.
We are not fussy customers or indeed do not like complaining but on this occasion we could not eat this meal. We voiced our disappointment and they apologised and gave us complimentary drinks.
Sorry but we wont be back.

This was our second visit to the hotel, but, unfortunately won't be going back...went a few months ago and it was like a ghost town,no customers,no staff and no atmosphere, sadly nothing changed this time...food was ok,nice and hot, lasagne was nice, fish and chips was nice, but my husbands chicken goujons were very dry and over-cooked...enough said.Didn't like sharing our dining area with dogs either. It's a shame because this is a wonderful building in an amazing setting and very nicely done up,maybe a Saturday afternoon is quiet time????

Went here with family , excellent food, excellent service, I tried my hardest to find fault but truly couldn't, if you drive past and don't call in, it's your loss. Truly fabulous.... A word of advice, don't eat too much before you go as the portions are huge and the food wonderful.

We recently ate at The Galloway Arms. We chose to eat in the Bistro area which was modern and quieter than the bar area. We are all big eaters but even we struggled to finish all our meals. The food looks fantastic, extrememly large portions and tastes wonderful. The menu is extensive with so much choice. We all commented that we do not know how they do it for the price!! We actally said the size of meals could be reduced so we could have room for 3 courses and perhaps make a little more profit for the owners!! Well done to the chef, what a brilliant job you are doing. The presentation is exceptional. I hope you receive the praise you so well deserve!!!
My family have already returned and have made The Galloway Arms their favourite place to eat in the area!!
