“Warm welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013

Stayed for one night whilst visiting family in the area. A very warm welcome by Ronnie (and the dog!). Cuppa tea and scones on arrival, much appreciated. Bedroom + ensuite clean, well equipped and comfortable. Wonderful breakfast, with large selection including a fantastic fresh fruit salad and cooked breakfast. Have passed the details on to family members.

A little gem hiding in Dumfries and Galloway! A warm greeting from Ronnie ( with coffee and delicious scones too!) Modern clean room, tastefully decorated, attention to detail second to none ( yay!! fresh milk in the room!) Fantastic breakfast ( eggs were amazing!) Great to have someone willing to pass local knowledge of the area too. We thoroughly recommend this lovely B & B and will definitely use again when we are next in this area.

Core facilities and services extremely good. What makes Brookford stand out a B&B is the attention given to small details such as:

+ Small lounge / dining room for guest use
+ Fresh milk for tea / coffee in bedrooms
+ Flexible access throughout the day
+ Use of patio
+ Free wi-fi
+ Optional packed lunches and evening meals
+ Immense knowledge of local area and enthusiasm to share it
+ Huge range of options for fresh-food breakfasts (including glorious fruit salad)

We had a 4 night stay here recently and would not hesitate to return in future. Rooms are spotlessly clean and the service second to none. We decided to include an evening meal in our stay and we were not disappointed with a delicious 2 course home cooked dinner being provided each evening at a time of our chosing. The lounge where we ate our meals is a very pleasant room overlooking the garden which has a very busy birdtable where we saw a varied collection of local breeds coming to feed! Ronnie was very knowledgeable about the local area and was able to advise us on the best local attractions to visit during our stay. We left feeling like the stay had not been long enough and will be returning to Brookford to explore more of the Southern Upland Way in future.

After a day of travelling bij plane, bus, train and bus, we arrived in St. Johns Town of Dalry tot start our hiking holiday. We, me and my son, had chosen to walk the middle part of de Southern Upland Way. Ronnie gave us a warm welcome. The rooms were nice and clean. The breakfast provided us with the neccesay energy for the walk tot Sanquhar. Ronnie also prepared an excellent lunch tot take with us. Brookford B&B is located immedeately along the SUW. It is minutes walk to Dalry where we had diner.

Hi Dirk,

Many thanks for your comments. It is particularly good to know that we are looking after our Southern Upland Way walkers so well. Hopefully it will encourage more people to take the challenge of one of the last remaining wilderness experiences in the UK. We hope you will come back to take on the western section and we can look after you again when you finish!

If you are thinking of travelling to the Borders or even going upto the Highlands, I would definitely recommend a stay at the Brookford B&B. I stayed for one night on business in early June 2013 and the welcome could not have been more welcoming from Ronnie. Your stay MUST include the evening meal (hence the title of this review)-this dish is Ronnie's speciality and is to die for!!

Nothing was too much trouble for the hosts and the room was very clean and had an en-suite shower room and a bed which was very difficult to get out of in the morning!

Breakfast was also excellent with a huge choice for such a small establishment-it would put the larger hotel chains to shame!!

Don't miss this "hidden gem" on your travels to the North!

Peter Donnelly

Room Tip: There is a choice of two rooms, both en-suite with superb facilities and very comfy beds!

Our 4 day stay at Brookford was delightful. We were given a warm welcome by Ronnie and the en suite room and facilities were first class. Ronnie was very knowledgeable on the area and gave a wealth of information whilst we enjoyed the delicious breakfasts. There is a small lounge with a nice view for guests to relax in the evenings with a selection of books to suit most tastes. The Brookford is at the top of Dalry and ideally situated for walks through the beautiful village which has hidden secrets and a wealth of history. A walk through the churchyard to the river is a must, following the steps of Robbie Burns inspiration for Tam O'Shanter, who after a night in the local pub fled from ghouls he observed dancing with the locals through the church door!. I suspect the local Clachan Inn beer may have contributed!
The area is fantastic and you are spoiled for places to visit. The Brookford excellent website contains all you need to know for where to go.
We visited James Clerk Maxwell's grave in Parton cemetry and then took the back Corsock road through beautiful countryside to Glenlair, Maxwell's house, where he shaped many of his great ideas. Considering Maxwell is rated in the top 3 of world scientists it is surprising how modest his burial site is, but the Parton area is so charming, I'm sure he is at peace.
We also visited Murray's monument which is not so humble and is perched on a steep hill giving one of the best views in Galloway. Flanked by a scenic waterfall and a grazing area for mountain goats one wonders what Murray did to deserve such a tribute. The monument plaque says he was professor of Oriental languages at Edinburgh University for one year so one wonders what size monument would be erected for 2 years!
A trip on the Raider's Road through Galloway Park gives an opportunity to see the best of this beautiful area steeped in history of religious persecution and glorious resistance.
Back to the Brookford for coffee and biscuits, an evening stroll through the village and then a restful nights sleep at this superb B&B. The Brookford is highly recommended.

Many thanks for your excellent review of Brookford B&B and our beautiful area. With such glowing praise it is certain that more people will choose to come to The Glenkens area of Dumfries and Galloway (and hopefully stay at Brookford too!).

It was a real pleasure to meet you both and look after you during your stay and I look forward to meeting you again soon when you return to experience more of our 'Hidden Gem'.
