“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Upon booking our stay at Ilita Lodge via a special, we indicated that our stay was for our babymoon. We mentioned this again when confirming our booking a few days before our arrival. We were hoping to at least have this recognised and perhaps have a little something to make us feel special.

On arrival, the manageress must have forgotten that it was our babymoon, even though we were the only one's checking in at that particular time, as she hardly noticed that I am pregnant (I had to point it out). We took that as not too big a thing, but it unfortunately did not end there. We were shown to a room with twin beds... really... twin beds for a babymoon? There was obviously not much thought put into this. We requested a room swop, which they gladly did and we got a room with a double bed.

As we were settling in and experiencing our stay, we noticed a few things that bugged us and also noticed that other people have complained about similar things before on trip advisor, which is really disappointing as you then feel like the people there don't care about their guests and their experience at the establishment.

The items we noticed were:
- the bed sheet did not fit the bed
- one of the downlighters was out
- the shaver unit in the bathroom did not work
- there were only 3 tissues upon arrival in the room and these were not replaced the next day after using all 3
- the toilet paper was not replaced after our first night's stay nor was a spare roll provided

We did not mention any of this to the manageress at first as there were no staff in sight. We realise these are all small things, but at the end of the day, the small things make up the big picture and the picture we saw was definitely not that of a 4-star establishment.

Along with the above, the service at breakfast on both mornings of our 2-night stay was such that we had to go knock on the kitchen door to get attention. For our hot breakfasts, our plates were put before us and the lady promtply walked away without giving us the opportunity to say if we're happy or would like anything else, which I did want and had to go knock on the kitchen door again to request. No other staff were visible.

Again this has been mentioned before by a couple of people on trip advisor, but it does not seem that it was addressed. When checking out we mentioned all of this to the manageress and she was very understanding and apologetic, although it does not change the fact that we already had a bad experience at a time we really wanted something special. The website gave a very different impression of the lodge than what we experienced. And absolutely no special somethings for us on our babymoon... not even a tiny little chocolate on our pillows or even an acknowledgement that this was a special time for us.

There is also nothing to do on a rainy day, forcing you to either spend the time in your room (with only 4 very basic TV channels) or to go out... which is quite a trek, as even though the view is beautiful, it's quite a drive to town or anywhere else.

We feel that even though we booked via a special deal, it should not be an excuse for receiving inferior treatment compared to any other guest. In fact, it should serve as promotion for good word-of-mouth advertising for the establishment, which this lodge unfortunately failed at dismally.

This was also the last 2 nights of our babymoon and we were very disappointed at having to end it like this. I must say, I would prefer to have my money back rather than being offered 2 nights complimentary stay, which we were offered by the manageress, but have not received as yet. I really don't feel like this is a place that I would ever like to visit again and would certainly not recommend it to anyone.

We enjoyed our stay at the lodge. The rooms are fine and clean and the view is fantastic. The breakfast is really bad and we could not get a drink at the bar for three days. The staff were very friendly !

We stayed at Ilita Lodge during February 2013 and were impressed with the service of staff-very friendly and exceptionally helpful. Clean and neat establishment. Great view from the pool and dining area. The service and facilities definately made it value for money. We hope to visit again

Stayed there on my honeymoon - what a disappointment. The food was disgusting - almost inedible. The room was very tired and outdated, It was probably nice once upon a time, but has gone down drastically since then. They advertise a Spa, but there isn't one, I could go on and on...

This was really a disappointing stay. Not a 4- star! As we got there, we were informed that the towels for our room is not DRY yet! That was 4 o' clock in the afternoon. No soap in the bathroom. Breakfast was very poor! Staff are not trained well. Will not recommend!

2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2012

We stayed here on the last night of a two-week holiday to South Africa, having already stayed in Wilderness, Cape Town, Hout Bay and Hermanus. The website marketed this accommodation as 4-star, but have stayed the night here I'd really have to question who awards these ratings because it felt a long way short of this.

We struggled to find the property initially, partly due to poor sign-posting from the main road. But having been put on the right path by a friendly local things had looked promising as we headed up the steep winding road past some magnificent looking properties perched on enviable plots.

We had arrived slightly later than we'd expected slightly before a magnificent sunset, and were greeted at the front gate by two barking dogs. Once the gates opened we directed to our parking spot for the self catering apartment we'd been given.

Location was good but the problem was the accommodation itself, the rooms although proportionally large we very sparsely decorated with 80s furniture, low grade fixtures and fittings and really extremely basic bathroom facilities.

We could handle the basic facilities but it was the damp bed sheets and towels that really put us off this place, the mattresses were also not very nice. Even lighting heaters and candles could not save us from the smell of damp, we even considered sleeping in the car!!

Nice location but pleased don't be fooled by the 4-star rating - for the self-catering apartment we stayed in at least. What a shame as the space has some great potential, and the website looked promising.

Even for a good view of the sunset we had to drive back up the dirt track to get an uninterrupted view of the valley.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

From the 9th to the 12th of July, my friend and his fiancé, my girlfriend and I decided to experience the 4 star Ilita Lodge. We looked at their website and it looked like a great place to stay.

The Ilita Lodge is very well presented and the setting and view is very attractive however the service and food were nowhere near the 4 star grading it boasts on their website.
We were not sure of what one should expect from a 4 star graded establishment. We are not fussy people and don’t expect everything to be perfect.
Being the easy going people we are, we did not complain at the time, as we did not want to ruin our holiday experience, rather focus on enjoying our time in the area. The manager Lyn, was exceptionally friendly and always helpful when we asked about things to do in the area, which made us less inclined to complain.

Unfortunately the accommodation at Ilita Lodge really put a damper on our holiday.
Some of the concerns mentioned would not have bothered us as much, if some of the basics had been up to standard.

In the Rooms

- No soap
- Wasn’t enough hot water for two people to shower in the morning.
- Blinds in our room were broken
- Windows in our room were very dirty
- Mould on the bathroom mirrors
- Hairdryer was broken
- Extremely noisy extractor fans

Service and Food

- There was one broken (4slice) toaster for the entire dining room at breakfast. It was later replaced with one (2slice) toaster to cater for roughly 25 people at the busiest time.
- There was one pot of coffee for the whole dining room, which was often empty. There was usually no hot water available to make tea. We had to go in to the kitchen to ask for these to be refilled.
- We didn’t have a problem with ordering eggs individually. But by the time the eggs arrived there was not much of the other food left in the buffet trays.
- The buffet trays when emptied were seldom refilled. And when they were it was only enough for one or two portions.
- When arriving at breakfast one morning, there was only enough bacon to serve half our table, we had to ask for more bacon but it had run out. The rest had to settle for boiled sausages.
- We never arrived at a table with salt and pepper available, we had to find our own (we searched through the cupboards).
- There was one set of condiments (tomato sauce, HP sauce, etc.) this was shared among the entire dining room. On one morning it wasn’t available, we had to find it in the cupboard.
- We were told supper starts at 6pm, we arrived at 6:45 on the first day and were told dinner was ready. We finished our food by 7:15 at which point a tray of vegetables suddenly arrived over cooked.
- We were never offered any drinks at dinner time even though there was an unstaffed bar next to the dining room. On the last evening once we had finished our food and had to bring our own drinks to the table, we were finally offered something.
- Overall the service was very inconsistent. Sometimes there was no one around and we had to search throughout the property for assistance and 90% of the time, there was no one at the bar. The service improved slightly when the manager was around, but when she was not, there was no service.
- When we arrived we were told the Jacuzzi is turned on at 4pm, when we arrived back later that evening, we found it wasn’t on. So we turned it on and had to wait till 9pm to use it. From then on we requested that it be turned on each day so we could use it in the evenings, this never happened.

As our first visit to a four star lodge, it was very disappointing. We hope Illita Lodge takes this as constructive criticism and improves their service.
