Grand Isle is the place to stay if going to Great Exuma - listen to everyone and pack your super strong bug spray. We went the 'natural bug spray' route - useless. The staff and service and the Grand Isle were amazing - Marika and Alex and Macarra made sure we were always taken care of. We rented a car one day of our trip from the hotel for $74 US and decided not to leave the hotel after that - not much to see and we had trouble finding the Tropic of Cancer beach (still unseen to us) and we were unable to get to the Coco Plum Beach d/t massive pits of water in the road. Runaway bay was beautiful though (next to Coco Plum). You MUST go to the Chat and Chill - if you take a snorkel trip with Neville and his wife Lyndsey of Starfish Exuma Tours (he's also bartender at the Grand Isle by night) he will take you to eat here: the most picturesque seen you can imagine. Our day out with Neville was by far the highlight of our trip - swiming with fish and diving for conch (Neville) and playing with starfish at Starfish beach! Also - go visit Big D and his wife and daughter Dana at Big Dee's (D's?) up the road about 10 minutes from the hotel - amazing food and Dana is the sweetest waitress. Aside from these things - take your books and DVDs for a lot of R&R. Pool and beach are great - and you'll surely meet other guests who will make your stay very memorable. Take your golf cart around the course at the now closed Four Season - there's an amazing snorkel spot/beach near hole 11 or 12...

Few things to note -
bring snacks in your suitcase so you don't starve
bring basic medicine - bite relief creams so you don't have to go searching like we did
heard rumors that the grocery store near the hotel might be closing until the fall
order your food from all places, including the hotel with an hours wait in mind - the wait isn't bad as long as your prepared'
Bring your laptop - free wifi!

we spent one week recently, and we had a two bed sea front villas, and i must say they are greatly done furnished etc...in the hotel there is only one lttle restaurant with a very limited menu honestly its not great also the supermarket is a disaster and the four season is closed so BE CAREFUL not to be stuck there, as there is literally nothing, i mean nothing on the island , the villas have great kithchen but there is no where a descent super market to buy proper product, the super market near by is a joke, that sells rotten vegetables and out of date product... the beach is nice but overall now that the four season is closed i would not recomend anybody to go , service is ..lets say ok... people are nice and welcoming

We just returned from GI and have no complaints. First, a lot has been written about the food, my advice is plan ahead and manage your expecations. Mosquitos are not the resort's problem but they do their best to manage this time of year. There are limited things to do on the grounds but we went there to swim, snorkel, and releax. We rented a car and kept everyday full. The staff is ultra friendly and accommodating. I was given an upgraded villa and it was beyond perfect. One guy showed me how to crack the coconuts, one lady said to me after a special request "as long as you're happy" ...when is the last time you heard that ! Do not go if you want nighlife and big food experiences. Do go if you want to relax on beautiful grounds and in an awesome villa and are capable of creatively planning activities and outings for yourself (with the help of the conceirge).

The resort was great. Villas were incredible with beautiful furnishings, decorating, appliances, views, etc. Personal golf-cart use was also nice to have. Nice pool area with bar, hot tub. Access to private beach area. Nice spa with good services available. Staff was incredibly helpful in catering to guests' needs and always had great attitudes.

Food options were not great...basically 1 or 2 decent restaurants on site. With the 4 Seasons closing down next door, those restaurants are no longer an option and most others are a drive/cab ride away. Marina and golf course are also closed and area is fairly deserted.

Overall, was a great place to spend some quiet time in a beautiful location. If you're looking for action, though, probably not the right spot.

The condo was beautiful, very well appointed and it had a lovely view. However, the staff did not appear to know what they were doing. Since the Four Seasons closed next door, many of the amenenities (golf course, marina) are closed as well. The food was good, but it took between 45 minutes to an hour and a half to be served. Continenal lost my luggage, along with half the other passengers. When it did get delivered to the resort, the front desk did not call us or bring it to the condo. We went in search of it and found it sitting alone at reception. There was a wedding there the first night, so the resort arranged for transportation to a local restaurant. However they did not take the names of the guests that would be going to the restaurant, so we spent thirty minutes driving around the facility to see if anyone else was sharing the 10 minute taxi ride. Again, the food was good but the restaurant was ill-equipped to handle 20 patrons. Continental breakfast was supposed to be served each day starting at 7:00, however at 7:30 they were still dragging out yesterday's bagels to cook in a broken toaster. Each day we heard that they were short servers and cooks. We attempted to cook our own dinner in the room one night, but the rice we bought at the local market was full of bugs. The snorkling was great and the fishing guide was tremendous. The beach was beautiful and all but deserted. Sadly, the mosquitos were so bad, it made being outdoors very unpleasant. The spa was nice, but with so few people staying at the resort, it was hard to believe that I could not get an appointment for a facial in any of the four days we were there. For the flight back, the airline apparently changed the flight time and notified the resort, but they didn't notify us. The airport is primative, with no one available to answer questions. When the flight was delayed due to bad weather in the States, the airport workers just left the airport. No one knew what was going on and they did not leave a note or a sign with any information. It was very frustrating. At roughly $650 per day for the food and room, it was not worth the money.
