“Worth the Hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

We really enjoyed our visit to The Hermitage. Great view and the history is very interesting. Our kids thought is was one of the best place they have been to.

“Left to Rot......”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

Visited late August, 2013

When we found "The Hermitage", we knew a little about the site, so we thought we'd investigate, explore a little.

We left with a sense of misunderstanding about the site.... Why was the site left to rot, and fall apart? Why is it not maintained even a slight bit, with its link to the founding and settling of the area? Perhaps its link to slavery? Hard to say either way, but its sad to see this heritage being left to the elements.

I would say this, If this place could be purchased, it would be an incredible opportunity to renovate and return it to its former glory. Re built as a year round residence, but with tour potential....

As I am a descendent of United Empire Loyalists ( In Canada ), we know full the loss of these pioneer settlements / houses.

It would be nice for someone to save this Site!

“Don't Miss It”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

Even thought it is a steep climb up a rocky hillside, it is worth the effort to see the works of Father Jerome and the view from the top.

“A fun, interesting site”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

The Hermitage situated on Mount Alvernia (formerly Como Hill) is definitely worth a look-see while on Cat Island. Bird's eye view of the island.. hopefully a nice breeze, interesting structure(s) to check out .. and be sure to sign the "Guest/Visitor Book" (although you might have to brave some wasps)!

As Col mentioned in a previous review, there is an easier path up as opposed to climbing the steep rocks/steps. When first making your way, to the left one will see what might vaguely look like a "road" (or more literally, a path for vehicles I would say). Follow that up and it will wrap around and come up to The Hermitage : )

“neat little afternoon excursion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

this is a great afternoon visit with interesting history. the water and fishing are the reasons you come to Cat Island so there aren't a lot of things to see -- the Hermitage is a good visit.
