“Fun Week”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

We just got back from a week in Freeport at the Taino Beach Resort. After reading the reviews I was very nervous about what to expect. We stayed in a studio room in the Coral building. I will admit our room was a little dated. There were mirrors covering every last inch of the walls which seemed a little porn starish to me LOL The room however was very clean. We had a jacuzzi and separate bathroom. The resort is located right on the beach but I will say I have seen much better beaches. This beach had a lot of seaweed in the water during high tide. Low tide was not bad. They did rake the beach every morning. The pool area was amazing. There is a lazy river and a water slide and while we were there it was extremely quiet so we never had to fight for a lounge chair. The annoying part is that it is only open from 9-6 but they didn't seem to tell people to leave at 6. The water slide and lazy river were not turned on at 9 and usually closed before 6 which was irritating. We found the receptionist people to not be that friendly. It seemed as if you were bothering them if you had a question. However in general the Bahama people were extremely friendly outside of the lobby and hotel. There is NO maid service which was a first for us but I actually liked it better because you could go to the maids at any time and get what you needed without having them come into your room. There is also NO gym which was annoying to me because I like to go to the gym while on vacation. There is a ferry that takes you to Port lucaya which has several restaurants bars and shops. Overall we had a great trip and I would stay at Taino Beach again but I personally prefer Aruba over the Bahamas.

An older resort with full aminities. We rented through Reservation Network Group. Initially a little difficult but worked out well. The resort is older and across the Bell Channel from Port Lucaya. Transportation to anywhere is somewhat expensive. Nothing is within walking distance. The pool area is very nice with a large shallow stream pool. Sit on a float & circle the island which has a grotto bar. The landscape makes for nice easy nature walks. The resturant is on the edge of the beach with great views & average food. The rooms were clean and descent size. The service desk sells all the usual island adventures at an ok price. I give the overall experience a B-.

Room Tip: The differnt buildings are named. I believe it's Ocean that's closest to the water. Coral...

I used my RCI trade for this property.
I'll first start off by saying I tried several times to confirm my reservations. They finally emailed me back while I had a layover on my way there. Upon checking in, there were three ladies behind the counter talking with one another and didn't even acknowledge me. The bellman (CJ) actually came over to say hi first, are you checking in? I said yes. Then CJ went behind the counter and asked the ladies if my room was ready to check in....They turned to him and said in alittle while. I'm thinking the bad reviews were from travlers like myself who expected to be treated somewhat better, since we are virtually the ones who employee these ladies. The grounds are in need of some paint and TLC. The rooms were alright, but also in need of some touch up work as well. Everything is MONEY-MONEY- MONEY AND ME-ME-ME. I have always thought the Bohimian people were very laid back and very personal. Not at this resort. Even the driver I took from the airport asked me why I was staying at the Taino? That should of been a sign. Not sure what the problem is with the overall treatment. I will give it a few more days. I guess we are all entitled to an off day. Maybe will update later in the week.

Room Tip: I stayed in the Coral wing second level. There was really not alot of noise. I did love the view f...

Customer service, property, ocean view was great!! My daughter & I vacationed here last week and could not have been more impressed after reading some mixed reviews. I have traveled all over the caribean and this was a highly relaxing, accomidating, resonable resort. It had everything we were looking forward to. Beautiful beach, very clean, nice room with a great view and very reasonably priced!!! The pool was cool too. It was also romantic and I plan to bring my husband next time!!!!

Room Tip: the ocean!

My wife and I are teachers in south Florida, we decided to take a quiet, close spring break vacation. We were looking for a quiet beach close to home. We found a beach close to home in Taino, just a 45 minute flight from Fort Lauderdale. It promised to be a good time. The resort is developing so you have to put up with the "orientation" which is just a sales presentation. They try to get you into that early in your stay for a good reason. While the signs at the entrance say you must be a registered guest to enter, don't believe it. This resort appears to have contracts with several tour agencies and the cruise lines that visit the island of Grand Bahama. On cruise days the beach is busy and crowded with passengers from the visiting cruise ships. Obviously they didn't pay a maintenance fee, but they get to use the facilities anyway. The on-sight restaurant is frequently being used by tour companies for buffet lunches (they aren't available to the members). On Saturday of our stay the restaurant was closed most of the day for a wedding of one of the staff members. The rooms are adequate, but don't expect any beach views. The pool is huge, but the deepest point is 4 1/2 feet. OBTW, the pool and spa closes at 6:00 pm.

The staff is friendly, but not always really helpful. They do not necessarily go out of their way to accommodate the guests. There were many promises made to us to help us find events and places, but the outcomes were rarely productive.

The Bahamas are friendly to the US, the money exchange is 1:1 and they readily accept US dollars, but be careful, they will give change in Bahamas dollars. The resort is close to Port Lucaya, which is a cruise tourist destination on the island, always busy and crowded, prices are aligned to the tourist dollar.

Our room was a studio, supposedly with a full kitchen. The kitchen was adequate for preparation of food, but was equipped with few dishes and flatware. We had to wash dishes after each meal, and there were only two of us. There was always a little pool of water on the floor below the air conditioner intake. The room always felt moist from the humidity. There was no comfortable place to sit and relax.

This seems very negative, but we did enjoy the time there. It is more active than we had anticipated, but the beach is broad, the sand is soft, the water is clean and clear. The whole resort is on island time. There are some interesting events in the area. Just down the road, at the Taino Beach, is a fish fry each Wednesday and Friday. If you like fish and good food go.

Dear “Spring Break Getaway”,
Just wanted to thank you for your views posted on Tripadvisor, regarding your recent stay with us at Taino Beach Resort. Pleased that you mentioned in detail items such as our amazingly close proximity to Florida, and of course the truthful observations of Spring Break traffic overall on our island. (Or many other destinations during that season!) We did need to close the restaurant on that specific Saturday, but it was to honor our Chef of many, many years, who had passed away. A well-loved contributor to the island. We did open for lunch, however, and of course, we all march on. The Cruise groups are occasional, and usually coincide with that season. We are proud that our sales activities are pretty tame compared to what is understood as tolerable among resorts in Central Florida, and other high-volume destinations that systematically, and more aggressively, market tourists. Grand Bahama is a laid back island, and the people are fortunate to live in a culture that really, (really), believes that “taking it easy”, is good for their health, which is true!
Thanks again for your review and we hope to see you again soon…perhaps in the Fall?
Thank you,
Management

Taino Beach has just about the best beach we've ever been on, and the swimming pool is great too. The people are hospitable, helpful, friendly but not pushy. We have gone back time and again for a week of sun near the end of winter, and we don't tire of it. Go, relax, and enjoy!

My fiancee and I just got back from this hotel and loved it! Based off of the reviews we saw on this site, which was after we already booked, our expectations were very low. Everyone said how crappy the rooms were and unfriendly the staff was and whatever else you'll see if you keep reading. If you think this place was really that bad, you think too highly of yourself. Go stay at the Four Seasons instead is you think you're so great.

The pool and beach were beautiful, the staff was unbelievably accommodating and friendly and the rooms were more than just good enough. I highly recommend this place!

Dear Great Place,

Thanks for that fun posting! Often expectations are created – without any first hand knowledge of the property you are about to stay at!
When it meets the expectations – good or not so good, it’s reassuring to some.
Frankly, the adventure begins when people suspend expectations and just experience the place they visit!

Keep traveling, and we hope to see you in Grand Bahama again soon!
