We stayed here as part of a package with a day cruise on Discovery cruises. We stayed in the Sheraton but it is connected to the Westin which is more expensive and they share the pools and beach facilities. The hotel room was fine and there were different pools to choose from. There was a desk which was also very helpful in booking tours and things like that. Because we arrived on the cruise ship, there was a wait to check-in, but other than that the service was excellent. The island is beautiful. We went to Nassau after this which has more shopping and is more of a port for cruise ships-Freeport is more natural and quieter. We were there during off-season so not all restaurants were open every night, but there were usually two to choose from besides room service or going out. The price was very good as we booked early.

  • Liked — pools and beach
  • Disliked — everything in freeport is far away
  • Tips/Secrets: — stay at the heraton-it's cheaper but you use all the same facilities as the Westin

I was expecting a great hotel here, but was overall a little disappointed with it.

The hotel needs some major sprucing up in the hallways and public areas. To their credit, right now they are in the midst of a renovation. But you will have to put up with some construction crews for a few months while it is being completed.

In the meantime, a number of restaurants are not open, and it gets difficult to find a restaurant for dinner. Iries Carribean restaurant is open, and though it is a bit pricey, it is a wonderful experience, very good food and great service. Most other restaurants are not open or limited in schedule.

There is a breakfast buffet at the Westin until 11:30 AM and it is worth it as well. The rooms at the Sheraton are nice, but the rest of the hotel is in need of repairs, painting, etc. Though you pay a little less staying here than at the Westin, I would say at least right now it is probably worth the extra money to stay at the Westin part of the resort. Also September is a slow period, many of the shops in the Port Lucaya Marketplace are closed for the slow season, and the casino is really only busy during the evening. Only a few tables are operating then.

The beach is the best thing about this resort, beautiful white sand and everything on the beach is clean and well manicured.
Just bring the sunblock, you will get burned without it!!

Still a very relaxing vacation, I would consider coming back in the regular season.

The service was excellent in the restaurants, and the staff very friendly throughout the resort.

  • Liked — Beautiful Beach
  • Disliked — Hallways/public areas need repair and painting
  • Tips/Secrets: — Consider the Westin resort, and go during the Winter season instead of Fall

Stayed 4 nights 9-15 thru 9-19

We celebrated Mom's 75th birthday at this resort.

September is a great month to travel if you do not like crowds or kids. Had the pool to ourselves every morning. Some things were closed for the slow season, but enough is available so you cannot do it all. The Bahamas is slowly, very slowly recovering from a storm 2 years ago. Everything was within wasy walking distance from the hotel. Lots of gold but hardly any silver jewelry in the market.

Hotel needs work. The sliding door to the balcony is extremely hard to open in a lot of rooms. My Mom never could open hers. Both of our air conditioners made puddles on our balconies. They were carrying new furniture in the day we checked out. Water pressure was good. Pay the extra fee for the ocean view room, worth every penny. Got extra towels and ashtrays promptly. Grounds are well maintained but they need a trashcan in the beach area, some people are slobs.

Restaurant service was.......not going to get the tables turned quickly. Food was excellent. Skip the conch fritters and have the cracked conch, it was scrumptious every place I tried it. Bahamian lobster is tougher than Maine lobster but still tasty. The grouper was excellent.

Mango rum is a wonderful thing. Made in the Bahamas. Take some home but pack it well.

Several churches close by for Sunday services. Lots of singing. Round trip for $20. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church had a very nice service at 0930 preceded by the Rosary at 0900. They need more hymnals.

Typical souvenir stuff available in the marketplace but not much clothing for the 1X women or XXL men. Have they not noticed the size of the average American tourist?

Nice relaxing vacation.

  • Liked — location, pool, beach, smoking allowed
  • Disliked — noisy, leaking air conditioner; hard to open sliding door to balcony
  • Tips/Secrets: — cracked conch is the best value on the menus

My brother and I just returned from a long weekend at the Sheraton at Our Lucaya, and had a great time. The hotel was clean, comfortable and a great value. The staff was uniformly friendly, and seemed eager to make our stay as enjoyable as possible.
There are plenty of activities, shops, restaurants and bars within walking distance, and we didn't need to go farther than across the street the entire time we were there (just remember when crossing the street that the cars will be coming from the wrong direction). The casino was bigger and better than I expected. If you plan on playing mostly slot machines, be sure to sign up for the players card. I earned $50.00 in comps applied to my room in just three days.
Food and dirnks are not a bargain, and you will have to budget accordingly (if you are going to the pool, buy your sodas or water from the vending machines in the hotel for $1.00 instead of $3.00 at the bars around the pools).
All in all, this was one of the most fun trips I have had the pleasure of going on, and I am already planning a return trip (for a full week).

  • Liked — great service/hospitality
  • Disliked — Air conditioner was loud especially at night

We stayed at the Sheraton our Lucaya for 7 days and 6 nights. We loved the stay. The property was very family oriented on the Sheraton side with a lot of daily activities. The Westin is right next door and you can use the facilities there also. The grounds were kept in great condition also. The Westin side was beautiful also, more quiet and laid back. Check in and check out was very fast and smooth. I did notice the the lines were a little long at times. Food on the property was very expensive. We ate at Iries the first night and spent $78.00 for 2 appetizers and one entree.

The next day we went across the street to the Port Lucaya Marketplace and figured out thats where we needed to be. There are numerious restaurants there including a Subway and Dominoes Pizza. Most of the restaurants are normal prices, we spent anywhere from $7 to $15 per person. The marketplace also consistedof lots of shopping for souvineres and is also where you catch all the boat tours. Thursday and Saturday nights they have a live concert with local bands performing at the Marketplace also. All of the restaurnats and bars are open late these nights. We didn't take the kids, but it turned out to be a very family oriented evening.

The Robison Carusoe Beach Party was well worth the $$. And the food was the best. There is an all you can eat buffet.

The Bonfire was wonderful as well, also with an all you can eat buffet. We played a lot of beach games and there was a fire eater show also.

The Wednesday night fish fry was really great too. The food ranges from $10 to $20 for a plate. We got there early about 6pm. The line seemed to get very long around 7pm. At 8pm this turns into a party (family oriented of course).

One thing I can say is that the Bahamians love to party but its all family oriented.

My husband had a bad allergic reaction and had to go the the hospital. Grand Bahama Island is definately not a place that you would want to have to seek medical treatment. The hospital (Rand Memorial) is not anything like in the states. As a matter of fact, areas of the hospital were not even not air conditioned. It was very old and run down and not modernized at all. The baseboards were rotting and the equipment was very old. On one of the tours we took the driver told us a lot of times people who live on the islnd will take a boat to Miami treatment.

There is a Winn Dixie a couple of miles down from the Sheraton. We went to get snacks and bottled water (water goes for $3.00 a bottle on the beach). Everything at Winn Dixie was high. $3.00 for a loaf of bread, $4.00 for a half gallon of milk, $4.00 for a box of Capri Sun, $4.00 for a bottle of Sunny delight.

The Freepot/Grand Bahama area is no Beverly Hills, so don't expect it. It is a very urban area. We were there a week and had no problems on the streets of the city nor or the resort property.

This is a great place to go and have a good time.
