Stayed 4/28 through 5/2 with mom, dad, and two kids ages 3 and 5. Here's my review plus some factoids you won't find on the website.
The room - we had a room with two beds, ocean front with a balcony on the 3rd floor West wing. If you are agreeable to being on the ground floor, there are some rooms in the West wing that open right up onto a flat grassy area where you could let the kids play. I like having windows open at night. Everything was pretty quiet at night in the West wing but the East wing might get a little more nighttime noise from the Prop Club. Beds are above average and almost as good as at the Westin. Bedding and room seemed pretty clean (I am very picky in this area). Bathroom was very tiny and the toilet and tub are so smooshed together it makes giving a child a bath nearly impossible, so my 3 yo learned to take showers. There are two children's TV stations available. No G-rated movies available when we were there. No way to hookup a portable DVD player or video game to the TV so leave 'em home. The room had a little fridge and, thankfully, no minibar. Also had a coffeemaker, which was nice. Here's a really nit-picky gripe, but this mom loves her morning coffee - they only stock the coffeemaker with one little sugar packet.
The food - Food at the resort is expensive, but that shouldn't surprise anybody, and I thought the quality was pretty decent. Kid's meals at lunch were $8-$10. Standard kid's menu at almost all the restaurants is chicken fingers, grilled cheese, hot dog, hamburger, or fish sticks and fries. Adult frozen drinks are $8 and potent, beers about $5. They add 15% gratuity automatically to everything.
Kid's Club - Excellent. A really bright facility with outdoor play equipment and baby pool. Indoor there are several rooms for different activities. Video games, books, board games, arts and crafts. There is NO CHARGE to use the kid's club! They have a schedule of activities for each day. The staff told me they are open Fri and Sat nights from 6-10 for ages 4-12, but when we were there they were closed Sat night. They also closed at 1 on Sun when we were there but I don't think this is normal. Ages for the kid's club are 3-12, which is better than most resorts which require kids to be 4. They will also take younger kids for a max of two hours. Sometimes when I brought my 3 year old they would say she could only stay for two hours as well (she's tiny and looks younger), and sometimes not. We used the club a couple of times in the late afternoon to give the kids a break from the sun. The staff was very nice. Did I mention that there's NO CHARGE?
Staff - Excellent. I just don't get the rants on this site about service here. Not only was the Sheraton staff excellent, I found Bahamians to be very friendly and helpful in general. Maybe some travellers expect the underpaid cashier at Dunkin Donuts to be super enthusiastic about getting you a donut at 7 am? Would you expect that in the US? Be realistic. Smiles are generally met with smiles. Respectful patrons are met with respect. Many of the staff went out of their way to offer a smile and friendly word to the kids.
Pools - Excellent design for kids with a nice wide set of steps where they can find water of various depths to splash around in. The big slide is closed much of the day and I could never figure out the schedule. The pools at the Westin are heated, according to the guard, but he said to feel them to see which was warmest. Sure enough, there was always one that felt much warmer than the other two.
Beach - Beautiful, clean, shallow, calm. What more can I say? My husband and I did a little snorkeling right off the beach. Not much out there, but a few interesting things hanging out in the vegetation.
Finances - we had a "Family Plan" rate which I got by making a reservation on their website. It was cheaper than the AAA rate. $195/nt and kid's eat free in the resort restaurants, which makes a resort breakfast and lunch reasonable and convenient, but the staff didn't always seem to be familiar with the rate. Check out the buffet at Barracuda's for breakfast. $12 for adults. Kids under 5 are FREE, which they don't seem to advertise anywhere. Or is it 5 and under? sometimes they charged for my 5 year old and sometimes they didn't. It's a buffet, so it's as quick as you want it to be. It may also be the only meal of the day that doesn't include fries. Lunch entrees for adults were $10 - $12. Dinner entrees mostly in the $20 - $30 range, a few higher a few lower.
It was a low stress family vacation. I'll return - but I might stay at the Westin next time just to get a slightly larger room.
