“Wonderful Wedding weekend!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2011

I just recently got married at this resort the end of October, 2011. I wasn't sure what to expect as much of the wedding details were out of my hands until I checked in! I was pleasantly surprised!!! We had about 40pp come to our wedding and all stayed at the resort. The resort itself is amazing! Rooms were clean, beach was beautiful, food was delicious, drinks were tasty :),ans all the water sports (which are included) were perfect entertainment during the day! The staff at the resort were so friendly and helpful and really made this weekend special for my husband and I and our families. We hope to plan a trip back next year because everything was so wonderful!! I can't say enough good things about this resort and the staff there!!!!!

Four of us (2 adults and 2 kids) stayed at Viva Wyndham Fortuna Resort in Freeport, Bahamas. We stayed there for four nights from October 26 - 30th and were so happy that we chose this all inclusive resort.

The staff was very polite, courteous or professional. From the moment we arrived at the resort we were greeted with smiles, professionalism and hospitality. Wendy was our house keeper for our room during our stay. She did a great job of cleaning our room daily and left us plenty of new towels each day. We stayed in the Abaco building (A-4101). Loved the location of the room since it was so close to the main bar restaurants, theatre, pool, etc but at the same time a good distance so we were able to have peace and quite when we needed it. The room had a small refrigerator also that stayed very cold . The bartenders and servers was simply the best!! Thank you Richard and Ricardo for your great service!. Sandra from the snack bar your burgers, fries and nuggets were cooked to perfection!! From the many chefs and servers from all the restaurants we met, to the grounds keepers, all of these people made you feel welcomed. Also there was always a nice contingent of security visibly around the resort 24 hrs a day.

The decision to vacation at Viva Wyndham was based on an inexpensive deal we found on CheapCaribbean for the four of us. We enjoyed the beautiful white sandy beach, many off shore excursions (kayaking, windsurfing, sailing on the catamaran), music, dancing, entertainment, and games which all were included in the price we paid!! The animation and sports staff was simply awesome. We have to mention and give a big thanks to Capri, Annie, KJ, Andrew, Valentina, Justin, Devon and Norbert. your choreography and hard work for the nightly theater shows with all the other members of the staff was absolutely great. The resort is not in a busy or night life type of area so if you are you looking for that then you will need to either rent a car or take a taxi to get to that part of town.

The grounds are beautifully kept from the grass to all the shrubbery and walkways. The pool area was clean with ample lounge chairs and shaded areas. Pool and hot tub was great. The white sandy beach also had ample lounge chairs and shaded areas from all the palm trees.

The Junkaroo restaurant buffet had plenty of variety for everyone daily and the food for breakfast, lunch and dinner was always hot and good. You have to make reservations for the restaurants. We only made reservations for the Bamboo which was excellent but not a place you want to go if you are hungry since there is a long wait time there to finally eat.

TIPS:
Book a room in building A (Abaco) or B (Bimini). These are the only renovated buildings. The Bimini is the latest one to be renovated but the Abaco still looks nicely renovated. Do not book in building C (Cay). This building has not been renovated and it is a further distance from all the action.
Bring a big insulated cup because the cups they give you at the bar are small. So if you don't want to run to the bar for a refill every 5 minutes bring a large cup.
Bring plenty of singles for tips. These staff members work very hard and do deserve it. You will also find that will receive better service if you tip. It is just common sense.
Try to take part in all of the activities and entertainment you will meet nice people and maximize your vacation experience.

The Viva Wyndham Fortuna was a wonderful resort staffed with great employees and a awesome vacation experience.

Room Tip: Book in Building A or B. Bring singles for tips and bring insulated cup

First off don't expect Club Med:) in the US we tend to live in a bubble. This vacation was amazing! The staff love their job and the Bahamian people are very friendly and layed back. Compared to American standards some may be dissatisfied but this is 1st class for the Bahamas. We rented a car and explored the entire island, went to a fishfry with all the locals.. They were unbelievably hospitable. The national park is amazing and has a 200 foot sand bar. The scuba instructors Mal and George are fabulous people who have traveled all over and have amazing experiences to share(which they will over a drink @ the bar.) The activities are non stop and the shows are fun! I loved the layed back attitude they all have. The staff is always visible, they dance, do Kareoke, and have amazing stories about thier experiences all over the world. If you want to really experience a different culture and meet wonderful people who have passion for life GO HERE!! Nestor is amazing! The bar tenders Jervey,Giovanni, Kier they always have a smile on! The pizza is delicious(by shaq). Some People have said they do not like the food but when you travel to certain areas things are prepared differently,it is the cooking style. I never had hot food that wasn't hot enough. The cold food was very cold. This trip has shown me I need to get out of my American bubble.. Some people just expect too much.Mal said to me before I left .. " people should work to live, not live to work". If you expect the Ritz maybe traveling abroad just isn't for you. I loves it here! I will be back next year!

Last spring break, about 40 students and I from my college went to the Bahamas for the week. We took the Discovery Cruise there (also wouldnt recommend), and stayed three full days and four nights at the Viva Wyndham. When we arrived at the hotel, our room was not ready and after waiting an hour for our room, we found out that our room was in the furthest possible spot at the resort. The view from our room was woods filled with locals constantly being stopped by police right outside our window with the only thing keeping them from walking up to our sliding glass door was a flimsy iron fense. Our room didn't get clean once the four days we were there, so we had to stop maids to get clean towels. The drinks at the resort were quite the issue as the guys could hardly get the bartenders to look their way to serve them drinks without a decently sized tip. The drinks were not strong in the least and all tasted the same no matter what you ordered. Bottom line- if youre going to leave the country as spring breakers, don't go here, save your money and pay a little more for Cancun or Punta Cana. The night life was basically nonexistent with the few bars we did go to full of locals and not many other spring breakers. We ended up finding a bar about a mile down the beach hidden in the woods that was pretty fun!

Room Tip: Ask for waterfront view, my room of four girls were stuck in the very back of the resort- sorta scar...

So I was very hesitant about buying the groupon for this location based on the reviews and pics people posted, but it really wasn't that bad. The best advice was, it's a 3 star hotel, so don't go in there expecting 5 star quality. First of all, I'd like to say if it weren't for the shows the awesome staff put on at night, it'd be SO BORING to stay at this resort. Don't think this is anywhere as busy and alive as Naussau, it really isn't. There is nothing to do at night outside the resort. The hotel grounds are nice and clean and well kept. The staff is not rude AT ALL. They were all very pleasant. The food, not so good. They have a huge dining area (buffet) but the food's temp was never right. The hot food wasn't hot and the food that needs to be kept cold, wasn't. So I never took anything from the salad bar. The pizza at 10pm-2am is awesome and the chef is super sweet. Don't eat at the Italian restaurant. Olive Garden is tenfold better. The food there came out room temperature. And the soda...flat. The Asian restaurant was good but very limited on the selection. Very. And the menu never changes. And just because it says reservations only, you can still go there and ask to be seated if they aren't busy. There s never pepper available at the buffet. And if you drink, bring a big cup because you'll go through your drinks within 5 seconds. Their daquiris were great. I don't drink alcohol, so I have no opinion about the choices of the drinks. But my husband says they were cheap kinds. I have sensitive teeth and if you do too, you're screwed when it comes to ice drinks because they don't have a single straw on the property. If you go into town, eat at the Greek store there because it's really yummy! Authentic Greek food. It's called Zorba and their combo platter is AMAZING. As for the hotel's room, the beds suck. SO uncomfortable. No way around it, they all suck. Our room was fine though. They cleaned well, the water was hot and never ran out, and the view from the balcony is beautiful. When we went (10/7-11/11) it rained 3 out of the 4 days. So the water clarity sucked and we couldn't do any excursions :( The only one we did was the one done by the hotel. It's $35 a person, but because we stayed 4 or more nights, it was free. They take you out on a boat ride (10 mins) and let you snorkel. Nice if you've never snorkeled, but it's not amazing at all. That's why I wanted to do the excursions to the places known in Bahamas. Next time I guess. Lastly, if you go into town and want to hit up the casino, don't expect Vegas. It's tiny, with super old machines, and the tables open at 2pm (not earlier). The resort thankfully is self-sustained. Stuff to do at all times of the day like swim, tan, trapeze, archery, pool, ping pong, chess, and the staff are always getting groups together to do activities like darts, yoga, stretching, and dancing. At night, they do kareoke and their shows. The shows are awesome. The staff is super talented. Have fun!!!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are beach front. So it doesn't make too big of a difference.

We would like to thank you for choosing Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach Resort for your vacation destination.

We are thrilled to read that you enjoyed your experience here with us and all our staff.
We were pleased to read that you have enjoyed the food in our Bamboo restaurant as well as our late night pizza., specially the Bamboo Oriental.

We apologize for not meeting up to your standards and expectations with the food in our main restaurant or Italian restaurant. However, each guest is unique and has different expectations. Our cuisine offers a great variety of options every day in meats, pasta, fish, salads, desserts and appetizers. Although we truly regret you could not find something of your preference.

We are glad that you enjoyed your room and the view from it to the beach, as well as the snorkeling we offered to all our guests that were travelling from September 5th to October 31st to our resort and stayed 4 nights or longer with us.

It is a pleasure that you enjoyed as well the activities and entertainment. It is always a pleasure to receive the recognition of the hard work our animation staff makes for all the shows and activities we set up for our guest.

On behalf of the staff and management, we would like to thank you once more, for not only your review, but for your generous hospitality also. We hope to see you both re-visit us again.

My wife and I have traveled to beautiful islands several times with our children throughout the Caribbean and Bahamas, but we have never been to Freeport before. So we chose the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Resort. We stayed there the week of October 16, 2011 and were so happy that we chose this all inclusive resort.

We have to start this review with the staff from this resort, we firmly believe that no matter how beautiful a hotel or an all inclusive resort is, if the staff is not polite, courteous or professional, the hotel or resort is simply terrible no matter what their rating is in our opinion. Fortunately for us the staff was impeccable.

From the moment we arrived at the resort we were greeted with smiles, professionalism and hospitality. Gwen was terrific with her assistance from the time we walked in the door. The entire staff at this resort was just amazing. The house keeping staff made sure we had everything we needed when we arrived for a late check in, and throughout our stay Lisa made sure our satisfaction was met daily. The beach front room was always very clean updated and comfortable. It had a small refrigerator also that stayed very cold . The bartenders was simply the best!! Thank you Giovanni, you were the highlight for my wife with your fancy napkin flowers and making sure that you had one of your specialty drinks always in front of her. With you and Keir, we were never dissatisfied and always entertained. The beach house staff was always great when we ate lunch there. We noticed how they took care of other guests children as they walked up alone to order food and beverages. You know your stuff Frank, and Sandra, your fries were to die for and cooked to perfection!! From the many chefs and servers from all the restaurants we met, to the grounds keepers, all of these people made you feel welcomed. Also there was always a nice contingent of security visibly around the resort 24 hrs a day. Never have we seen at an all inclusive resort, management staff like Mr. LaChapel. He was very visible and ready to solve any issues that you may have had occur during your stay. Thank you Mr. LaChapel and all of your wonderful staff for a memorable week.

The decision to vacation at Viva Wyndham was based on our research of the resort and Freeport. It has been nearly 15 years since my wife and I had traveled alone without our children. So the type of week we were looking forward to was relaxation, white sandy beach, off shore excursions, and some music, dancing and entertainment. Travelers sometimes book resorts that can’t always provide what they are looking for and get disappointed because it was not what they expected. The resort is not in a busy or night life type of town, however that didn’t matter to us, so all of our expectations were met.

The resort was simply beautiful! The grounds are beautifully kept from the grass to all the shrubbery and walkways. The pool area was clean with ample lounge chairs and shaded areas. Pool and hot tub was immaculate. The white sandy beach also had ample lounge chairs and shaded areas from all the palm trees. There are non motorized and plenty of sport activities. The best thing was the rock and coral formation that is about a 50 yards off shore from the beach where you can free snorkel in 8 to 10 feet of water. It had plenty of beautiful fish, a large lobster and stingray. The dive center is also staffed by very friendly and informative people, they did a great job on our off shore snorkeling excursion. The animation and sports staff was simply awesome. We have to mention and give a big thanks to Capi, for constantly keeping us entertained. Also to Annie, KJ, Andrew, Valentina, Juicy, Norbet, and Gustavo, your choreography and hard work for the nightly theater shows with all the other members of the staff was absolutely awesome, together everyone makes a great team.

The Junkaroo restaurant buffet had plenty of variety for everyone daily and the food for breakfast, lunch and dinner was always hot and good. The coffee was the best we ever had in the Bahamas. There is a cooking station where you can have fresh eggs cooked for breakfast and hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch and dinner. But it is a open air building and was warm and humid some days even with the all the ceiling fans running. The small sparrows flying around though did seem kind of strange but that could have been just nornal. You have to make reservations for the restaurants. The Viva Italian restaurant food was excellent but the Asian Bamboo restaurant was just sufficient. Both served nice menus and the portions were a nice size. The staff was very professional and wanted to make you feel very comfortable. It was great that both restaurants were air conditioned, very clean and formally decorated for a casual dinner. You can find something good to eat from 7:00 am and all day right trough the night. But the best thing was the late night wood oven pizza bar that opened at 11:00 pm. The thin crust was exceptional and was just perfect to have something to eat after leaving the bar late.

Lastly we would like to express our gratitude to the resorts photographer for capturing beautiful pictures through his lenses throughout our stay. You can tell that he was a person that loved his profession and it this was just not a job to him. We loved all of our conversations and he always made us laugh. Thank you Audley, for making our anniversary a memorable one, and were glad we will always have our cd to look back on. Audley you are the BEST!!!! Thank you Andrew from the vacation club also for introducing yourself and we will be in touch. Though we were sad to have had our vacation end. We can’t wait to return again with our kids this time to enjoy the resort once more together. " ATTENTION!!! " The Viva Wyndham Fortuna was a wonderful resort staffed with great employees and a awesome vacation experience.

Being there for a few hours, it was not hard to see why it was such a good deal. We booked this hotel for a great price, it was a spur of the moment vacation, so we got seemingly a good deal.
It turns out we went to Freeport on the off season, which lasts abt 2 months of the year. No worries though, there weren't a lot of people to contend with, no lines no waiting as they say. The main lobby was a beautiful open air building, as was the bar and restaurant, all wood with big windows and comfortable seating. Check in was easy. Our room was not bad, I had read so many negative reviews that I was prepared for the worst, but it was not bad. We had a brand new flat screen tv, and clearly the bathroom had just been remodeled with granite, glass shower walls and a new sink. Also, the furniture was not bad either, new headboards, tables and a desk. But very little space to put your clothes. we had a superior oceanview room, and view could not have been better. The pool and hot tub were just perfect, no complaints, everything in the area was well kept and clean. The white sand beach was gorgeous and was cleaned every morning. Unfortunately, there was a storm off the coast which made it too choppy and dangerous to swim the first couple of days we were there. However, our last day was perfect, the water was lovely and warm, everything you'd expect for the Bahamas. And our snorkeling trip from the hotel was awesome!
Unfortunately, I have to agree with some of the other reviewers on the negatives of the resort.
First, the hotel is near nothing, it's a fifteen dollar taxi ride to Port Lucaya for two people if you want to do a little shopping. We were better off renting a car (from right outside the hotel lobby) for our last two days so we could go wherever we wanted to without paying a fortune for rides in dilapidated Bahamian taxis. Loved the casino at the Grand Lucayan. The shops on the island seem to keep whatever hours they want, close on Sundays, close during rain, whatever!
The staff were accommodating and friendly, though there was definitely an apathetic vibe, and this was mostly from the buffet staff. I was served an essentially raw cheeseburger, was made to go fetch my bun and cheese, and got an attitude when asked if my bun could be toasted and burger could be cooked more. Also, the woman at the omlette station we went to every morning asked me to fill up her glass with orange juice while I was waiting for my breakfast to be cooked, I was so taken aback, that I just turned around and filled it, I didn't know what to say!
The food was a little scary, but this is always a gamble at an all-inclusive. Breakfast was decent, I got the same thing everyday, fresh fruit, a cheese omlette, bacon and French toast. The coffee was atrocious, I have never tasted 'coffee' like that in my life, it was undrinkable. Fortunately, they have a espresso machine at the bar which opens at 9:30, so those daily cappuccinos saved me. The buffet was, as you will read in other reviews, overrun with sparrows and flies. The birds were not that bothersome, but with birds comes bird feces which I'm not a fan of. Flies were constantly landing on the food, I said to o e of the employees at the buffet, the OJ lady, there are so many flies in here, she simply replied yep. So maybe this is something the staff are not bothered by and don't feel the need to correct.
The food choices are frightening, there were a few meat selections every night, some over cooked pastas, mashed potatoes from a box, and some canned and reheated vegetables. Also, there is pizza which was usually decent, though one night I found that every pizza had been sitting under the heating lamps so long they turned dark brown, so the geniuses in the kitchen remedied this with just throwing more cheese on top. The salad bar, cold cuts, and pasta salads scared to bejesus out of me, so I steered clear. The desserts were also a little weird. Flan was delicious though. So mostly I lived on my same breakfast everyday, fresh fruit, and whatever came hot off the griddle or grill, and bread and butter. And I don't know what they put in the food here, but immediately after every meal, I had to visit the ladies room urgently, which by the way is inconveniently located out of the restaurant, through the garden and in another building.
We went to both of the reservations required restaurants on the property, luckily as it was off season we had no problems getting reservations. The Viva Cafe was ok, a huge improvement over the buffet, but definitely not something I would pay for if given the option. I had the caprese salad which was good but lacked basil, Caesar salad, bland and served warm. The entree was a beef tenderloin, which was delicious and perfectly cooked, however the side dishes that accompanied it were, again, atrocious. It was to be served with tomato gratin and gorgonzola polenta, what it actually had was raw sliced tomatoes covered in scary beef gravy, and some little cornmeal cake which was undercooked on the top and completely mushy on the bottom, and had no gorgonzola to speak of. The steak was the only edible thing on the plate.
At bamboo, the Asian restaurant, we started with spring rolls and soup, both very good. The entrees were horrible I had the tempura, which was greasy and undercooked, as in the vegetables were as raw as could be and the batter was still liquid and was not served with any sort of dipping sauce. The stir fries were gross as they were accompanied by the sorriest excuse for fried rice I've ever had. We sent everything back and just had more spring rolls and soup. I cannot really speak to the alcoholic drinks, as I came here 7 months pregnant. I didn't see any brand names behind the bar, but on the plus side they were free.
Lastly check out was easy, and we were able to return our rental car at the airport which was a huge plus. But I would not come back to the wyndham. If I came back to Freeport, definitely the Better option is the grand Lucayan, though I must say Nassau is a lot more fun with so much more to do.
