“Fresh, wonderful food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2012 via mobile

We stayed in the Via Wyndham Fortuna, where food was already paid for, to walk down the beach to Bertha's. What a gem!

The place is nothing much to look at but do not let that fool you.
We began with a seafood salad appetizer and ended with lobster. Superb! Fresh, wonderful seafood perfectly prepared.
For just 20 bucks I had the app., 2 lobsters, dirty rice, wonderful pasta, an more of the exquisite seafood salad.

Walk to Bertha's; turn at the beach bonfire, say hello to Sophie the dog, come in and sit down with a beer.
... Can't say enough good things!

“If you want GREAT Bahamian food, this is the place to go!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2011

Just a short walk up the beach from the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach, Bertha's is one of the best kept secrets around. I was lucky enough to see a couple of people mention it is some reviews, that piqued my interest and we decided to try it.

The Blue Dinghy may not look like a whole lot from the outside, but don't be fooled. Bertha doesn't have a menu, she just tells you what she has. Our choices were fish, chicken, or conch. I ordered the cracked conch, my wife had barbequed chicken. The sides that were available were salad or french fried (I took fries, the wife a salad). Were we surprised when Betha carried out a plate the size of a pizza pan (14-16 inches) with the food for the two of us. My first thought was, "there is no way we will finish this". My wife had two leg quarters of chicken and I had a mountain of conch. The conch was the best I had on the island. Perfectly seasoned and not the least bit tough, I managed to each every last bit. My wife said it was the best chicken she had ever had...ever! We cleaned our plate of everything except a little of the salad, with the last bite just as good as the first. We washed it all down with a few Kalik beer while watching the beautiful sea from the porch.

After our meal, we had a great time talking with Bertha about some of her other hobbies such a crochet. My wife is a quilter so the got along like a house on fire. Bertha even pointed out to us when a ray swam by in the shallow water. I don't think either of us wanted to leave but we knew it was time. Bertha asked us to sign her book of guests, which we did and then we walked back to the resort.

If you go to the Viva Wyndham, this is a place you must go! You will not regret it and the memory of it will be one of the fondest of your vacation.

“Authentic Bahamian Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2011

We read the reviews on Bertha's before venturing there - otherwise we would never have stepped foot inside just on looks alone. It's a ramshackle house right on the beach. Inside is a hodge podge of chairs, tables and clutter. But, this was one of the highlights of our trip!

We stopped in early in the afternoon to let them know we would be there - and Bertha recommends that - otherwise you will be waiting a while for your food.

There's a bar, which her son was manning. Sooo friendly. While some of us sat at the bar with him, the rest of us played dominos on the deck with one of his cousins. It was so much fun.

Dinner was ready and we walked into the dining room to a smorgasbord of food, family-style. Lobster, chicken, conch, fish, vegetables. We just helped ourselves. It was really good - the lobster was a tad dry and the fish was fried, but otherwise it was an authentic experience I am so happy to have experienced.

We were the only people there all night and got to spend lots of time with Bertha, her son, the cousin and our taxi driver who is friends with them even came back. We all chatted and played dominoes. You have to go!

“Bertha's deep-fried Bahamian lobster is the best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2011

A short walk on the beach from Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach Resort is Bertha's Blue Dingy. Bertha prepared mouth-watering Bahamian lobster for us that can't be beat. Take time to talk with Bertha - she is a true Bahamian beauty, sweet as a Bahamamama.
