My husband and I went for our anniversary. No kids! We were not sure what to expect from these reviews, so we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best. Upon arrival we were immediately ushered through the check-in lobby into the resturant for complementary drinks and snacks. This was not an option. The drinks were bathroom Dixie cups of fruit punch and styrofoam cereal bowls of pretzels. Then we were required to fill out a form disclosing such things as income. Come to find out this was the timeshare qualification process. Being keen to this, we all the sudden had an income under $30k, so we were not "invited". After this, we were allowed to go back to the lobby to check in.
Our room was on the third floor. No elevators so pack light or pay the price. Our air conditioning worked great! As for the room service? They took our dirty towels, but failed to replace them. I had to ask for clean ones. The pool was nice and refreshing. But don't go out after dark if you are female and either alone or with only another female. A couple of men approached our young female friends and tried to sell them drugs. Right in the open, at night, as they sat on the pool chairs. They were told by staff there was nothing they could do about it.
The pool bar was the only place to get "food". If it wasn't fried, they couldn't make it. The resturant we were first sent to, was not open for any meals. Although they never actually said this, every morning, noon, and night we were there we tried to eat there and it was "closed". I say closed but no one ever admitted it was closed. When we went to the lobby to inquire why the doors were locked, the response was to call the resturant, and surprise, no one answered. They never did figure out why there was no answer.
Take the bus! It's cheap and if you care to know anything aboout the people and island this is where the information is. The bus driver takes you through back roads. Ask him anything and he'll answer. Ask the other people on the bus and they will be more than happy to talk. The people are great!
On our last day, we checked out early, 9:00am. We were invited to enjoy the pool and bar while we waited for the free shuttle to take us to the port to board the ship. It would be there at 2:00. We declined. We had made arrangements the day before with the Sherraton at Port Lucaya.

The Sharaton will hold your luggage for free and give you a beach pass. This will allow you use their beach towels and beach chairs. If you don't like the beach, then use one of the three beautiful pools. Or do like we did, use both! We got there about 9:30am. Checked our bags and headed straight for the beach. Around 12 noon, we went to the resturant there on sight. It was great! Great atmosphere! After eating, and drinking, we made our way to the pool! It was beautiful! We drank more drinks, and more drinks.... We had made arrangments with our cab driver who took us to the Sharaton, to pick us up at 3 pm to get us to the port to board the ship. He arrived on time and we had plenty of time to get on board. We shared the cab ride with our two female friends and only paid $5 per person! Great deal!
All in all, The Island Palm is nothing special, but for our first trip to Freeport, it was not all that bad.
