“I checked out early.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

IDK. I'm beginning to lose confidence in TA reviews and ratings.

I booked a last minute trip to Freeport on a whim and scouted TA for suggestions on places to stay. Coral Reef was #1 but it was completely booked, apparently, so I went with reviewers' second best - Pelican Bay I booked through their website which turned out to be a smart move as it enabled me to check out early.

There's nothing terribly wrong with Pelican Bay, and I was even upgraded to a suite since it was my first time there. It was nice, as were the staff, with a view over the bay and marina. But it just didn't feel...right. For one thing, I was hoping to wake up and be able to look out and see water in the morning, but the bedroom in the suites is in the back of the unit, windowless, very dark and somewhat gloomy.

Best to stay at the Grand Lucayan across the street, (which was #4 on TA, really?) where I got an ocean front room on the top floor, very bright, new and clean-feeling, for $30/night less and free wi-fi ($12.95/day at Pelican). Maybe it's better I stayed one night at Pelican as it gave me a deeper appreciation for what I was missing.

I'm left to wonder about some of Pelican's review(er)s and question if they looked across the street. I recall when the taxi driver brought me from the airport, wondering why I wasn't staying at the big place right on the beach. Pelican offers a free 7 minute ferry ride to Taino Beach, but across the street I can simply step out the front door.

Dear DCTim,

We thank you for providing a review regarding your stay! What is most important to us is that you had a great experience on Grand Bahama Island.

While Pelican Bay has never marketed itself as being on the beach, we are certainly happy to ensure that guests coming to Grand Bahama have a wonderful stay and it is great that you experienced this with our neighbors across the street. We acknowledge that our hotel will not suit the needs & wants of every guest, but we strive to provide quality service and this is what the majority of our reviews express.

We apologize for any inconvenience you had in relocating and should you return to Grand Bahama Island in the future, we wish you a wonderful stay.

My son got married in April, 2013 at Pelican Bay. It is a lovely venue for a wedding. The staff went above and beyond to make it a classy and fun affair. The food was excellent and the reception room was beautifully decorated. The hotel provides access to the beach which is across the street. The rooms are spacious, but the furnishings and bathroom fixtures are a bit dated (at least by American standards). There are beautiful views from each room. There is some shopping and good restaurants within walking distance: try Zorba's for breakfast and the Flying Fish for fantastic seafood. You will enjoy this venue!

This hotel is beautiful and the staff is peerless. We spent five days here. The location is adjacent to the Port Lucaya Marketplace, a mixed blessing. Once you walk it and shop it, there is no reason to go back. On the positive side, it is also next to UNEXSO, a mecca for reef divers.

The rooms are large and airy and spotlessly clean. The only down side of the room was the bathroom could use an update but I don't spend a lot of time in there anyway. I also did not like the mattress but that may be personal preference. The excellent and cheerful staff makes up for any shortcomings.

A car makes the difference. We explored from one end of the island to the other. The beaches and small towns are well worth experiencing. We found that Bahamians are friendly and outgoing everywhere, not just in the tourist areas.

The downside of the trip was the food. While there is plenty of fresh seafood, we found that the Bahamians don't cook it very well. Most is deep fried or overcooked. There was one notable exception that we have reviewed separately.

Oh yes, one other downside but it was the luck of the draw. The weather during the week we were there was terrible. It was warm but the winds remained high enough for three days so that no boats were going out. No fishing, no snorkling, no boat tours; Bummer.

But, this review is of the Pelican Bay hotel. I would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Get a water view room.

A truly wonderful hotel, beautifully decorated rooms and surroundings. Although it's not situated on the beach, you only have a five minute walk to enjoy the beautiful golden sands and crystal clear waters. The hotel has a lovely quiet pool area/bar and a great restaurant onsite too. The main village area of Pt. Lucaya with numerous bars and restaurants is only a couple of minutes walk away too. A great dive centre is just next door which also boasts it's own dolphin sanctuary just a short boat ride away. Highly recommended!

We had a really nice vacation getaway at Pelican Bay! We stayed in a suite and were blown away by the size and ammenities of the room. I can't imagine the cost to decorate one room in this hotel. There were 2 flat screen tvs (one really big!). 5 lights in our bedroom alone, an espresso maker, desk, books to read, copper sink - wow. It's mind blowing. We were really happy. The view out to the canal was lovely with sun in the morning. The pass through for the breakfast treats and newspaper is a fabulous touch.

Only a couple of down sides to the room - the hot water lasted about 6 minutes, the air conditioning was really loud and the bed might need replacing as it was a little lumpy and squeeky. Finally, as much as it was great to unplug, wifi in the room would have been super. :)

The resort itself, mostly lived up to our expectations. The plants are awesome. One night on the way home, I could smell a beautiful flower. I looked high and low for it and eventually found a little species of night blooming jasmine. Heavenly! Then I noticed they were at most of the pathway entrances to the rooms. Also, it was neat to see a white Bird of Paradise. There are so many varieties of different plants everywhere. Props to the landscapers - they do a GREAT job. Also, the walk way around the canal area was so much fun to look and see all of the fish! It was like looking into a high priced aquarium! However, I was really sad to see two of our pools milky and out of operation (no signs to indicate this) and the one pool by the restaurant was questionable for a couple of days too. No swimming this trip and, as a water baby, that was a big downside.

We did take the boat over to Taino Beach - FUN! The boat Captain was smiling the whole time and, even though it was quite windy, maneuvered the boat like a pro. I will agree with one of the other posters that it is really difficult to figure out where to go once you get off the boat! We ended up asking a timeshare person and - well - you know how that went. When we came back we just happened through a parking lot and once we made it outside of the parking lot we realized we were right at the boat pick up. Signs would be really helpful. And, I felt really jealous that the guests at that hotel were enjoying their pool.

We had dinner at Sabor the first night we arrived and could not have been more impressed - especially for a "hotel restaurant". The drinks were delicious and GOOD pours. We had the bruschetta which was just right and full of flavour but dinner knocked us over. We had the grouper and it was out of this world. Perfectly cooked with a melange of flavourful vegetables on top. Excellent. We were back and forth for nibblies our entire trip. A drink here, a dessert there (Kahlua chocolate cake - very moist and delicious) and on our last day before catching the plane, our final lunch. Staff was extremely friendly, professional and prompt. View is great. Such a nice surprise.

Overally, were were really happy we chose to stay at Pelican Bay.

We just stayed last week and loved it, a stones thro from the market. Very clean room, people were very nice and helpful. We plan to go back.

The only issue was used condoms outside our patio door, there does not appear to be a person who cleans the grounds daily, other then that it was great!!!!!

Room Tip: ask for a room that faces the water and pool area beside the resturant

This hotel is gorgeous! Our room had a separate bedroom which added a special touch. The main pool was amazing and beautiful at night. The breakfast was pretty good. The decor is very cool and island vibe themed. Not one complaint about this place!
