I booked this vacation over a year in advance, back when the reviews were good. My husband and I were there for one long, horrible week. This hotel is beautiful on the outside but it is in grave need of help on the inside!
To be fair, I will say that the food at Dune for dinner was good, though the alcohol mark-up is indeed very high. The grounds are breathtaking as well as the turquoise ocean. Strawberries and champagne were served every evening at about six o'clock. The butlers offered to press our clothes for dinner and our maid was very friendly. So, what went wrong? Everything else.
We had booked a room in the new Crescent Wing as far in advance as the hotel allowed and requested a second floor location. They gave us a room on the first floor. The manager explained that everyone wants a second floor room. Ah. So, making a request 13 months in advance does no good. Also, when we arrived, they had raised our room rate from the published rate and it even differed from the confirmation letter we were given. When we arrived in our room, we discovered that the air conditioner was broken. The engineer came in and seemed baffled and then offered this explanation: "they're all like that". Ah, again. So, we either froze or sweated. There were other irritants about the room, too. The T.V. didn't work, the blinds were broken, the lamp fixtures were broken and there was mold in the bathroom that had been spray painted over, poorly. We got a couple of things fixed the next day. The rest, we had to live with.
Our location, room 1040, was apparently in a noisy location. Kids were running above us on the second floor, maids were chatting in the hallway. Next to our room was their linen closet. Loud music played in the suite next door. Lawn mowers woke us early in the morning and oh yes, the unsolicited wake up calls we received at 7:00 a.m., 4 a.m. our time in California, what a joy! It was hard to go back to sleep on this particular bed. It was hard and unforgiving.
The communication between staff seemed to be absent. One day, they thought we were moving to another room and we were locked out from noon 'til three p.m.. Like I've said, some of the staff were nice but most seemed like they had a chip on their shoulders and tipping doesn't seem to help. The staff in the Living Room and lobby area were snooty. One night, we came in and asked to rent a DVD, an amenity their manual and directory lists, and the woman at the front desk glared at us and flatly said, "no, we don't rent movies. If you want one, you'll have to order pay per view". We almost felt reprimanded.
The beach staff was horrible! The first day we were down there, they said they had no towels for us. We waited a half an hour, then my husband finally went and got towels from our room for us. The following days were not much better. Towels but no service. If you want a drink you have to go and impose on their group conversation near the stairs. They all seemed to be having a good time together, oblivious to the patrons. The pool staff was quite different, attentive and friendly. But they do want to sell, so if you ask for some water, expect a big bottle and a hefty bill. Expect this at the restaurants, too. One day our waitress told us that their iced tea had no caffeine in an effort to sell it to us.
Housekeeping was only okay. Our sheets were not changed for a few days and we never got refills on the soaps and shampoos. Again, tipping extra didn't help. The internet service only worked for one day out of seven but we were charged for all seven. However, upon request, the manager did remove the erroneous charges. Oh but don't try getting him on the phone, we were left on hold for 20 minutes and finally hung up and walked to the front office. It is this way whenever you try to reach the front office period.
The spa is not a spa. It is a few treatment rooms. We booked two 90 minute massages, which were started late. We were supposed to get 20 minutes afterwards to use the shower or relax in our room but instead, after a mediocre job of massaging, the therapists hurried us out of the room. As they stood outside the bathroom waiting for us, I felt guilty for even taking time to get dressed. After this, we canceled our second scheduled massage.
All in all, the good about this hotel was so little that we couldn't wait to leave. In fact, the night before our departure was the only happy time we had as we chanted "never, ever again".
