“Absolutely Horrible!”

One & Only Ocean Club

What a let-down - completely overpriced and too many issues for just a 4 day stay, here's a quick list:
No limo on arrival after speaking to OC in the Bahamas the day before and getting a confirmation #, then the person whom we spoke to denied/avoided even speaking to us
No pillowcases or bed sheets our first night
No robes
Butler service inconsistent/poor – butler didn’t even remember that he made a reservation for us, we had to remind him that he did.
No water in the room
No turndown service
No champagne/strawberries 1 night was missing and later found out that on the night we did get the champagne that it was in a local liquor store for $9.00/bottle
Candy eaten out of our mini bar by staff, left garbage in trash
Dirty glasses left in room all day/night
Used pool towels left in room for two days
Butler reservations – we were told that they were made for Nobu, no reservation was there
We cancelled a reservation for Dune with the front desk, on the evening of that reservation Dune called us in our room wondering where we were
Our invoice was supposedly left the night before in our room, wasn’t there
Shuttle service to/from Atlantis non-existent a few times
We spoke with asst. hotel manager, was told that we would hear from her and she would fix everything – never saw or heard from her again
Lip service, no real service!

We visited this hotel hoping we would have a wonderful relaxing time. According to the website pictures and to the price tag, the hotel should be one of the top hotels in America, but this is as far from the truth as it possibly gets. Staff at the front desk are rude and not helpful at all. When asked for possible excursions, they only offered the really expensive ones and hide the existence of other ones, even when you specifically ask them. The staff at Dune have an attitude, by some strange reason, they all feel superior to any of their guests. I was six month pregnant at the time, and they didn't mind keeping me waiting for a table for more than 15 mins..Same thing with the beach personel, you would need to wait for more than 20 mins. for a bottle of water or for a chair to be prepared for you. They advertised several restaurants in their website, but when you get there, there is only one open, and the menu has been the same for the last couple of years. The rooms are not clean at all, and there were bugs in them (possibly flias). Furthermore, we tried complaining to the general manager and he completely ignored us. That really showed the service level standard: near zero. Overall, the experience is not recommended. So, please do not waste your money in this resort.

I am very surprised by the negative reviews on this site for the One and Only Ocean Club. My husband and I have just returned from a memorable five day stay and whilst there we tried to understand how anyone could have given such negative views. The Hotel, the grounds, the staff and the service were well worth the expense of staying there and as long as you accept that the exclusiveness of the Hotel means it is going to be more expensive then you will have a wonderful time.

Check in/Room
At the time of booking our room in the Crescent wing we had not requested a second floor room as we guessed everyone would do so. Imagine how pleased we were then when arrived at 10am to not only be told our room would be ready in 30 minutes but that we had a second floor room in what was, in our opinion, the best position in the wing for a spectacular view of the ocean. The receptionist who checked us in was helpful and friendly and showed us around the resort whilst our room was prepared. The room itself was very large with an enormous balcony with table and chairs and two sun loungers. The bathroom was large too with two sinks at different ends of the room, a huge walk in shower and a large bath which also filled up quickly. Our Butler was very helpful and was always checking we were okay. The champagne and chocolate dipped strawberries each evening were a welcome treat. The room was immaculate and the twice daily maid service very efficient.

Grounds/Pool
The Hotel grounds and beach are beautiful. The gardens are especially lovely as they are mature and the main pool is very classical which is in keeping with the rest of the resort. The pool service was super – I loved the difference complimentary magazines each day and sorbet of the day – and the sun loungers the most comfortable. The pool café served great food and drinks and the staff were excellent – especially Joseph. We did use the beach one day but much preferred the peace and tranquility of the pool.

Golf/Spa
My husband played Golf and really enjoyed his round and thought the course was attractive but not as spectacular as the course at the Four Seasons on Exuma. I had a wonderful massage at the Spa which although small has beautiful treatment rooms in private gardens with a batch for two and day bed. The tennis courts looked good the gym is large but we didn’t feel energetic enough to make use of them!

Restaurant/Bar
We had breakfasts and one dinner in Dune. Breakfasts were a la carte and although fairly expensive were very good and large portions. Our Dinner in Dune was very good – we had the chefs tasting menu. We ate three times at Atlantis with our best meal being at Nobu. The bar at Dune is very good too with some great cocktails and the Library is great for an after dinner drink.

Check Out
Our flight back to the UK was not until 9pm and when I asked the concierge about a late check out she agreed to try and sort something out straight away and after doing some ‘juggling’ of room allocations confirmed that we could keep our room till 6pm. This was amazing as most hotels are not as helpful and often charge. There was no charge and she sorted it out graciously.

Trips
Whilst there we did the Dolphin Encounter at Blue Lagoon which was an incredible experience. My husband also dived with sharks through Stuart Cove’s which he highly recommends. Atlantis is worth a walk around as it is quite amazing what has been done there and the casino is very good. However I would not want to stay there as it and the pools there are very busy. It was nice to escape back to the Ocean Club and the SUV shuttle to and from Atlantis makes you feel very special too.

Overall we had a wonderful stay at the Ocean Club and will definitely go back. The service was beyond expectation and nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel very special. Again, I am stunned at the negative comments so please don’t be put off – go and see what a wonderful place it is.

“50th birthday in the villa”

We took 3 other couples with us and stayed in the 4 bedroom villa, next door to the one in the recent James Bond movie. Incredible from start to finish. We had private butlers and chefs that couldnt do enough for us. Whatever we wanted they provided, always with a smile. Accomodations, food and service all spectacular. I've travelled the world and this was the best weekend ever. We are going back next year.

I booked this vacation over a year in advance, back when the reviews were good. My husband and I were there for one long, horrible week. This hotel is beautiful on the outside but it is in grave need of help on the inside!

To be fair, I will say that the food at Dune for dinner was good, though the alcohol mark-up is indeed very high. The grounds are breathtaking as well as the turquoise ocean. Strawberries and champagne were served every evening at about six o'clock. The butlers offered to press our clothes for dinner and our maid was very friendly. So, what went wrong? Everything else.

We had booked a room in the new Crescent Wing as far in advance as the hotel allowed and requested a second floor location. They gave us a room on the first floor. The manager explained that everyone wants a second floor room. Ah. So, making a request 13 months in advance does no good. Also, when we arrived, they had raised our room rate from the published rate and it even differed from the confirmation letter we were given. When we arrived in our room, we discovered that the air conditioner was broken. The engineer came in and seemed baffled and then offered this explanation: "they're all like that". Ah, again. So, we either froze or sweated. There were other irritants about the room, too. The T.V. didn't work, the blinds were broken, the lamp fixtures were broken and there was mold in the bathroom that had been spray painted over, poorly. We got a couple of things fixed the next day. The rest, we had to live with.

Our location, room 1040, was apparently in a noisy location. Kids were running above us on the second floor, maids were chatting in the hallway. Next to our room was their linen closet. Loud music played in the suite next door. Lawn mowers woke us early in the morning and oh yes, the unsolicited wake up calls we received at 7:00 a.m., 4 a.m. our time in California, what a joy! It was hard to go back to sleep on this particular bed. It was hard and unforgiving.

The communication between staff seemed to be absent. One day, they thought we were moving to another room and we were locked out from noon 'til three p.m.. Like I've said, some of the staff were nice but most seemed like they had a chip on their shoulders and tipping doesn't seem to help. The staff in the Living Room and lobby area were snooty. One night, we came in and asked to rent a DVD, an amenity their manual and directory lists, and the woman at the front desk glared at us and flatly said, "no, we don't rent movies. If you want one, you'll have to order pay per view". We almost felt reprimanded.

The beach staff was horrible! The first day we were down there, they said they had no towels for us. We waited a half an hour, then my husband finally went and got towels from our room for us. The following days were not much better. Towels but no service. If you want a drink you have to go and impose on their group conversation near the stairs. They all seemed to be having a good time together, oblivious to the patrons. The pool staff was quite different, attentive and friendly. But they do want to sell, so if you ask for some water, expect a big bottle and a hefty bill. Expect this at the restaurants, too. One day our waitress told us that their iced tea had no caffeine in an effort to sell it to us.

Housekeeping was only okay. Our sheets were not changed for a few days and we never got refills on the soaps and shampoos. Again, tipping extra didn't help. The internet service only worked for one day out of seven but we were charged for all seven. However, upon request, the manager did remove the erroneous charges. Oh but don't try getting him on the phone, we were left on hold for 20 minutes and finally hung up and walked to the front office. It is this way whenever you try to reach the front office period.

The spa is not a spa. It is a few treatment rooms. We booked two 90 minute massages, which were started late. We were supposed to get 20 minutes afterwards to use the shower or relax in our room but instead, after a mediocre job of massaging, the therapists hurried us out of the room. As they stood outside the bathroom waiting for us, I felt guilty for even taking time to get dressed. After this, we canceled our second scheduled massage.

All in all, the good about this hotel was so little that we couldn't wait to leave. In fact, the night before our departure was the only happy time we had as we chanted "never, ever again".
