Arrived on Carnival Miracle. You got to leave the ship as the first batch to be sure you will catch the bus. They will not wait for you because the boat takes people from all over the island. Waited at the fountain right out of the exit of the cruise terminal. Bus came, picked up others along the way from several other hotels. Arrived at the outfit, which is at the SW side of the island.
This is a large scale operation. They have many boats. Everything is streamlined. We rented the wetsuits because we wanted to stay in the water for as long as possible. Water is on the chilly side in December. Staff looks like surf bums from the US. Not service oriented, no smiles, won't make you feel warm but professional and efficient. You know, the actress-moonlighting-as waitress type.
First snorkeling site: shallow reef. Beautiful crystal clear water, lots of fish of all shapes and colors. It was a windy and choppy day, but the visibility under water is still quite good. Two thumbs up.
Second snorkeling site: deeper water, shared with two dive boats. The guide threw fish food into the water which attracted schools of larger fish (15-25 inches long). They swam around you, fun although a little scary at first. Another guide free dive down the bottom (about 30-40 feet deep).
Third shark site: you must go into the water one by one and all must hold on to the line they throw out of the stern of the boat. No spitting, peeing, throwing food into the water because they attract the shark to the surface. Despite being instructed not to make any splash, a fellow tourist jumped into the water, prompting everyone else saying:"stay away from that guy!" lol. Saw 5 reef shark (4-6 feet long) circling the bait cage at the bottom. They are such beautiful animals. Graceful and calm. You will be in the water only for about 5 minutes. Got to keep your hand held together behind your back, lest the sharks mistaken them as food. Later, some sharks started to come closer to the surface, we went back on the boat one by one, QUIETLY. Then the sharks surfaced fully.
All in all, a very satisfying experience. Nice water, plentiful of fish, the shark experience is one-of-a-kind. Well worth the money. If the dock staff can turn on their island charms, it would be a 5 star experience.
