We stayed at Sheraton from 7/1-7/8 with 2 kids ages 7 & 6.
Getting to the hotel from the airport: We would recommend a taxi if you are traveling with more than 2 people. Taxis were charging $20 -$25 each way. The 4 of us took Majestic tours, which cost us $25 per person round trip.
Hotel: The lobby was nice, the service at the front desk was mediocre. Just like most people experienced, if your nice and friendly, the staff will be friendly. However, it seems that the guest has to come out friendly first before the hotel staff will budge. The first room they gave us was a partial ocean view and the room itself did not seem very clean. I checked the toilet and there was a yellow ring in the basin. We requested another room and this time they placed us in ocean front, which was nice. Toilet was clean. That's another thing, the toilet...looks like it came from a cruise ship.
Beach/Pool: We spent most of the time at the main pool. We were able to share the neighboring Wyndam's pool w/ waterslide. If we had to chose between Wyndam and Sheraton, we were glad we chose Sheraton because Wyndam invites cruise ship guests the use of their pool and beach. If you like crowded and busy, then stay at Wyndam. If you like relaxing and mellow stay at Sheraton. Sheraton's beach was nice, although I wished they could groom the sand and remove the cigarette butts and debris. The non-motorized water sports were free to use, just needed to sign up.
Restaurants: Yes, it was expensive but Bahamas is expensive. We ate at Dolphin Grill, Amici, Bimini Market, Deli (Wyndam), Moso (Wyndam), and Black Angus Grill (Wyndam), and their coffee shop. Out of all, we would recommend Black Angus Grill. For the most part, all of the restaurants had good service, again note to self be friendly to have friendly service. Also, another note, there are A LOT of flys. So if you are eating outside, ask for your meal in a to-go container so that when they bring it to you, it's covered. Then you can eat and cover your food at the same time.
Activites at Sheraton: Because we were there during U.S. independence day, they did have some great family activities: Hot dog eating contest, water balloon toss, sack race, etc. The activities staff did a good job to entertain the guests. They also had an incredible fireworks display, one of the best I've seen...almost tops Disneyland's fireworks display, just no music.
Outside of the resort: Like everyone says, take the #10 bus for $1.25 to downtown. If you're interested in seeing Atlantis you can take the ferry from downtown for $3 each way/person. To do the waterpark, Atlantis is charging $120 per adult and $90 per child. To do the aquarium, Atlantis is charging $35 per adult and $25 per child. We didn't do either. We figure, when the kids are older and taller (there are height requirements for the bigger slides) we'll stay at Atlantis. We did walk through the hotel lobby, it was GRAND.
Rating: Even though we had some good moments, unfortunately we would not recommend this hotel. For the money we spent, we were expecting better service and cleaner rooms.
