It has been two weeks since my visit to the Sheraton and I decided to wait and write a review because I wanted to give it a fair assessment.
Upon arrival, the lobby area is nice and one could tell that the hotel had gone through a rehab a few years ago. However, other than the lobby, the management clearly does not care about the upkeep and maintenance of the common areas and the rooms. I am not sure what I should expect for an ocean view room (most rooms have an ocean view btw) for $120 a night. But, being a loyal customer to the Starwood brand, this hotel does not live up to the Sheraton standard of a major hotel chain. I would hate for anyone to lose their job but the GM of is hotel should be ashamed of its condition after a recent rehab - it just screams "we don't care!" And it's prevalent in the attitude of the staff minus the cocktail waitress at the bar and one attendant who helped me with my bags and showed me to my room.
The hallways were gross with holes in the plaster, very dirty carpet, the doorways had spots of rust around it. One could say, its the tropics that cause this but I've been to many island resorts and never seen anything like this. The room is a decent size and the view was fantastic but the bed was flimsy, felt like a cheap $400 mattress I had in college, the pillows not fluffy, and dirty curtains. The bathroom on first glance was okay but it could have been nice if they kept it up. I'm still trying to contemplate how a recently rehabbed hotel looks this shotty after a few years. Again, I chalk it up to poor management.
BUT, there is a very positive but... on arrival we wanted to go to Atlantis so bad because we thought it was better over there. Little did we know, the Sheraton was so much better. For one, Atlantis is a 90s version of a Vegas strip hotel/ bad Disneyland wannabe. The hotel is kitschy - I imagine when Bahama Mar opens, Atlantis will be forgotten. It is super crowded with a lot of families and very worn, it's just way too much traffic coming through there. After that experience, we realized that the Sheraton, even with its shortcomings, was a better place to be - it is quiet and the beach location can't be beat. It also doesn't hurt that the Daquiri Shack is right across the street.
Now, we were here for a wedding and I have to say that the Sheraton did a great job, so whomever runs the wedding events should be promoted and run the entire resort. The food was excellent for all the events from the welcome reception, rehearsal dinner and wedding reception. The staff didn't seem particularly happy to be working but they did an adequate job and should be commended.
Originally, I planned to give this hotel two stars but, like I said, I took my time and I think three stars is warranted with an asterisk. This hotel could be great, location can't be beat but someone at corporate needs to go down there and figure out what is going on with management. As an HR professional, I know employees reflect the attitude of management - and if management doesn't care neither will they.
