My husband and I traveled with our 6-year old son and 4-year old daughter to the Bahamas during the second week in April. As a lot of other reviewers have shared, this hotel could use a little TLC in its rooms - chipped paint here and there, and furniture that could be touched up too - i.e. strips of finish missing from the dresser, and build-in closet, but that said, the room was functional, and the house-cleaning staff was very responsive (3rd floor)
The check-in process was smooth, we arrived at 12 noon, and our room was ready, and they allowed us to go right to it. The beach is super nice, the free non-motorized water sports were a hit with my kids - they loved the kayaks. We did a bit of snorkeling in front of the hotel - a hint, go EARLY in the am; otherwise, there won't be many fish or other things to see.
We utilized the pools too - the center pool was a comfortable temperature, but the side pools were too cold for my taste, my four-year olds lips would turn blue when she went in it - but the sloped entry made it great for kids to utilize - maybe they should heat that pool too, especially at busy times? The towel situation was fine at the pool/beach, all except the last day - then the pool towel Gestapo was out in full force. First, there were no towels, and then when they arrived, they practically wanted to lay eyes on each person in your party, just to make sure you weren't getting any EXTRA towels... Heaven forbid you want to lie on a towel, and use a different one to dry off...
The restaurants - we ate at them all. I think Amici was best - they were SUPER helpful - went out of their way to accommodate me, went next door to get my kids chocolate ice cream when they didn't have any. One thing I did not know before arriving is that the Sheraton was offering a promotion - kids 4 and under ate free at Amicis, the Buffet and the beachside restaurant. That was a great savings to my family! Made everything more affordable. While expensive, I didn’t think it was a crazy as it could have been - dinner at the buffet restaurant was $38 - inclusive of tax and tip - so that is about equivalent of a $30 dinner in the US - Amici’s - Dinners were $24 to $41 and kids meals $8-$12, a glass of wine was $8.75. I think the room service menu/food was the highest quality/lowest price for what you got. I got salmon in the room one night for dinner, and it was a VERY generous piece of salmon, asparagus and mashed potatoes for $28. The only place I felt was a true ripoff was the little waslk-up cafe on the second floor - $5.18 for a bottle of Gatorade, upwards of $8 for a Latte, etc.
We chose this hotel, because I'm not one for big crowds, or Disney like atmospheres all the time - I think the accommodations were reasonably priced, but if you are only comfortable in 5-star places, this isn't for you. One note, the Wyndham next door is a total dump - can't even believe they are still renting rooms out - stuff it literally falling apart, and apparently they aren't fixing it anymore - we went every day to the Wyndham though, for a trip to Starbucks. On the sidewalk between the Sheraton and Wyndham are a few games my kids loved - huge checkers and chess, connect four, etc. (different then the games at the Sheraton)
All in all, I feel like we got what we paid for. We booked on Travelocity, and our room rate INCLUDED the resort fee - when you are booking be careful to check (since I had also looked at Orbitz and there price was slightly cheaper, but did NOT include the resort fee)
