I've read a lot of reviews that say the hotel is run down and boring... that's just not true. I actually frequent Atlantis about 2 times / year and stay for anywhere from 3 - 5 nights. On my first visits, I did not have enough time to get everything in. Aquaventure has so many water slides and there were so many restaurants to pick from. I really enjoyed the aquarium, the dig, and walking around the resort to see all of the different animal pods. It's quite amazing to see such good care taken of the dolphins and sea lions as well as the sharks and sting rays. Who cares about the size of the tvs in the sports bars? In your room, there's at least one 32 inch flat screen TV with all the sports and premium cable channels as the sports bars! Putting huge TVs in the bars would kill the decor. At some point you have to concede the large TV to the balance of the new technology in the midst of the decor of Atlantis which is "the ancient, lost city and it's ruins."
So here's the truth:
Atlantis is a fantastic resort. I've stayed in hotels and resorts all over the world and Atlantis is one of my favorite playgrounds. I love that you can be at the beach in the day and in the casino at night. Is it Caesar's Palace? NO! Is it one of the best casinos in the entire Caribbean? Yes! As for the water park, is it Sea World or Busch Gardens? No! Is it the best water park in the entire Caribbean? Yes! The combination of the lovely beaches, the many pools, the water activities, the animals, the marina, the casino, the scenery, the delicious dinner options, and the weather is what makes it a paradise. You'd be nuts to think otherwise.
The fact that it's expensive is something that you should have known before going. Everybody knows Atlantis is expensive. If you go there expecting to cheap out, you'll be disappointed.
Remember, this is my opinion. So I'm going to give you what I consider the harsh reality about the people crazy enough to rate Atlantis a 1 or a 2...
Reading reviews from those who say Atlantis is terrible or run down (especially the people who are just there for half a day from the cruise) says (to me) that either:
A) This is their first time out of the US and they don't understand how international hotels are in comparison to American hotels.
B) They hate vacation
C) They don't have enough money to enjoy the spoils of Atlantis (it's pricey) and are bitter about that
D) They missed a lot of stuff and need to go back
What I know. from being a frequent guest at Atlantis, is that I haven't ever met any other guests who had a terrible time at Atlantis. I've met people who have spent more than they wanted to, I've met people who lost at the casino, I've met people who got into arguments with their friends, but they didn't have a terrible time.
Also, what I've learned to do to not spend my life savings at Atlantis shops is... stop at the grocery and liquor store on the taxi ride to the resort... know my limit at the casino... and venture out to the local restaurants for dinner from time to time.
People, it's not hard, but being expensive doesn't erase the truth about Atlantis. It really is a paradise! Definitely visit. You'll regret it if you don't.
