“Great location in heart of Nassau”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

My wife and I stayed here while on vacation for five nights from February 5th to the 10th. We stayed in room 677 on the club floor which gave us access to the Executive Lounge on the 7th Floor. Our room was on the ocean side of the hotel.

Our room was small but very clean and modern. The bed was very comfortable. We had free wifi both in our room and throughout the hotel and grounds. The pool and small beach were well kept and clean. Towels were provided at the beach and pool. We never had a problem getting our choice of lounge chairs. The beach is very close to the cruise ships docks - close enough that you can at times hear the loudspeakers blaring from some of the ships. The beach is also adjacent to Senor Frog, a local restaurant/night club that plays rather loud music audible from the hotel beach. There is also a constant drone from some machinery or engine at the port that seems to run 24/7. The point is, this is not a quiet, desolate beach spot. I don't want to make too much of the noise - it is only a minor nuisance - and easily disappears if one has an iPod with earbuds. The restaurant by the pool serves drinks and sandwiches. Try the mahi-mahi wrap - it is very good, as is a drink called Bahama Breeze which tastes like Hawaiian Punch. We used the fitness room several times. All the equipment is by Precor. Two of the treadmills require repair, but otherwise the gym is fine. The Executive Lounge provides a great view of the harbor and cruise ships coming and going. The Lounge serves a Continental breakfast on weekdays which was very good. In the evening the Lounge serves soft drinks, beer, wine and a small selection of hard liquor, as well as some hor d'ouerves which for the most part were not very good. Overall we were glad we booked a room on the club floor and we would definitely do it again if we ever come back. The service at the hotel was friendly and efficient. The location is excellent - a short walk to the shops in Nassau and the downtown restaurants such as Matisse.

Room Tip: The club floor is worth the extra cost.

We wanted a short flight out of NYC, a few days in the sun and used Hilton points. Cramped rooms, phony staff, beach looks nice but you wonder about what is in the water as you watch 3 cruise ships a day go in and out. Close to downtown but the 10 square blocks of downtown get old very quickly, especially the badgering by locals to buy knockoff watches, purses, cigars and ‘other’ things you can end up a Bahamian jail for. They just don’t leave you alone. I do not recommend walking around downtown after dinner – not a safe place!!!
Puerto Rico is a much better choice than Nassua for location, hotel, staff, locals and things to do.
The executive lounge is a joke. Don't bother - soda's are locked up, food is below average, and the coffee machine is horrible.

I would not recommend either the British Colonial Hilton or Nassua.

Although the pictures of the Colonial Hilton online look beautiful, it isn't quite actually representative of the actual Hilton. The hotel is nice enough, in a decent location. However, the Hilton beach is flanked by a barge and all of the days cruise ships cutting off an otherwise beautfiul view. Also, the pool at the Hilton allows cruise ship passangers to purchase day pass to the Hilton pool and beach which causes an overcrowding at both. The staff at the Hilton is pretty lackluster, and overall not helpful. Even the concierge seemed put out when asked any questions. Overall, it is a decent locationa and not a bad place to stay but I travel often and I do not think that this Hilton is worthy of a 4 star rating. It is a 3 star hotel.

Located downtown Nassau this hotel is within walking distance of everywhere! And that's where the it begins and ends. The staff are "professional" aka "unfriendly". The receptionist greeted me with the usual "welcome to the Hilton" and a plastic smile which quickly changed into an icy glare when my credit card was declined. I called my bank and had the situation rectified but the damage was done! The rooms are the tiniest I have ever seen (other than in old European city hotels or prison cells) and if you get a "city view" room without windows which cannot be opened you will understand the Prison cell comparison! Concierge staff are friendly and helpful and constantly apologise for the ridiculous prices charged the hotel! The will advise o where to get the best value for your money!

Room Tip: Ask for beach front at least you will have a patio!

The reviews for this hotel are very mixed, and having stayed there for 2 nights, I can see why. It really is a mix of good and bad. Very good: location. It's got a unique spot, being at the town centre, yet having its own beach. The pool, garden and beach are well kept and lovely. The water was clear in spite of the ships, and it's rather surreal to be swimming so close to these hulking monsters. Also the foyer is wonderfully theatrical. The so-so: the room - rather small, dreary mushroom decor which makes it look vaguely dirty even when clean. But bathroom was large, clean, no mould or anything as others have found. The fairly bad: service. It was all very hit and miss. Some staff charming, many clearly couldn't give a stuff. The front desk/phone people are worst. But if nothing goes wrong, so you have no need to deal with them, you may be fine.
Overall I'd say stay here for a night or two if the location - and it is great - appeals, and you don't mind the prices. Given the location, the building, and what you pay, this could and should be a wonderful hotel, and it's annoying that it's rather hit and miss.

Room Tip: Harbour view rooms are much better, if you get one that does look out over the harbour (with some yo...

While the location is nice, with the old city at your back door and Junkanoo beach around the corner, my room was the strangest, darkest one I've ever been in. The only window was approximately 2x2 feet square, in the upper corner of the room, with a view of a roof and a McDonalds. The dark, low room wrapped around the elevator shaft, so I was treated to the sound of it all night. This would be sad in Cleveland, but in the Bahamas, where you come for sun and sea, it was depressing. The staff said they would look for a new room, but never found one during my stay.

Room Tip: The difference between ocean view and city view is a completely different hotel feel.

The British Colonial Hilton is an older hotel that is right by the cruise ship docks in downtown Nassau. It is well kept and quite beautiful. The pool is fabulous with bed like loungers that are surrounded by white flowing curtains which can be closed for privacy if you want to nap or read a good book. As Hilton Honors members we were upgraded to a corner room and the view was amazing. Watching cruise ships come in and dock right outside your window is surreal. There is a private beach and the water is that perfect blue that cannot be described! We had breakfast each morning in the hotel restaurant. We chose the continental breakfast that was more than enough with many pastries and wonderful fresh fruit. Towels are provided at the beachfront and can be taken off site as well for any adventures you might take. This hotel is close to restaurants and most tour buses pick up here. It is also walking distance from Fish Fry which is the place where all locals go to eat - shanty like restaurants all in a row with great fish and drinks. Downtown shops are also within walking distance but they are mostly T-shirt shops or very high end Cartier type stores. Nothing in the middle price wise. There is a concierge in the hotel lobby who is very helpful. This hotel is somewhat expensive, but so is all of Nassau.

Room Tip: Just ask for a room with a view! We were upgraded to a corner room that had windows on both sides.
