June 22nd to 29th
This was our 4th visit to Caneel Bay in the past five years (we went to Little Dix in ’03). Caneel Bay was wonderful!
Except for our first visit in 2000, I have thought the service at Caneel was very friendly and very good. However they have moved it up a notch or two and my feeling is that the service is now excellent! We really enjoyed talking to many of the staff. We found out that our housekeeper had been there 40 years!
We arrived at St. Thomas and checked in at the Caneel Bay counter at the airport. Everything, including the room we requested, #51, was in order. Check-in took only a minute or two. Once we tagged our luggage, we did not touch it again until it was delivered to our room. We had requested a refrigerator and it was in our room when we arrived, along with an iced bottle of Champagne and a note from the manager welcoming us back.
Our room was exactly as we remembered and expected it to be. It had been repainted since our visit two years ago and the furniture had been replaced. The bed was still as comfortable as we remembered. The four down pillows were huge and the bed linens soft and very high quality. There were four fresh beach towels in our room every day. Room #51 is a Cottage Point rooms (premium ocean view). It was, and I counted, 396 steps to Scott Beach.
In the bathroom, there were the expected toiletries (coconut shampoo, hair revitilizer, body wash, and mango body lotion) and the biggest, thickest bath sheets we have ever seen. My wife actually commented that the towels were too large! Robes and slippers are also provided. The bathroom had a lighted magnifying mirror and a good hair dryer, things my wife expects.
As an example of the service; the key was missing from our in-room safe. We stopped by the front desk on our way to dinner and I mentioned it. The associate immediately radioed someone and confirmed that it was being taken care of right away, which it was.
Even though we really liked our room at Caneel, no one goes there for the rooms. The beaches and the peacefulness of the resort are its draw. While there are seven beaches, my wife and I see no reason not to spend every day on Scott Beach. It is the most beautiful and comfortable beach I have ever seen. On our second day, Scott Beach was the most “crowded” that we have ever seen with only 31 people on the quarter-mile beach. It still felt as if we were the only ones there! The snorkeling right off of Scott Beach is great!
Food at Caneel (and all of St. John) is somewhat expensive, unless you get the meal plan. My wife is not a breakfast eater, so the meal plan just does not work for us. I got up at about seven every morning and enjoyed the complimentary continental breakfast. The coffee and orange juice was great and there was a good variety of really excellent bakery items. If my wife ate breakfast, we would do the meal plan. It seems to be an excellent value.
We had dinner in the beach bar a couple of nights and also at the Equator restaurant one evening. Two can eat in the bar for about $50.00 and there is now an early (6:00 - 7:00 P.M.) dinner special in the Equator for $35 PP, which includes soup or salad, entrée, and desert. We took a taxi into Cruz Bay other nights ($3.00 PP each way) for dinner both for variety and because it is somewhat less expensive. Our favorite restaurant in town was The Balcony, with a great sunset view overlooking the harbor and excellent food and service.
I think Caneel was nearly full when we were there the week of June 21st, but we hardly ever saw anyone. My wife commented every day "where are all the other people." I think this is one of the things that appeal to us. It is so large and spread out that it never seems crowded.
The grounds at Caneel are truly beautiful. While there are shuttle busses, we preferred and enjoyed walking wherever we went. At night the resort is very romantic with lots of torches and a minimum of lighting. There was a can of Off insect repellent and Raid bug spray, but we did not need either. There were no mosquitoes or other insects to bother us. We enjoyed the wild donkeys that pretty much roam the grounds and my wife enjoyed feeding the gulls at the beach each day.
Everything about Caneel Bay more than met our expectations this year. Very good service has improved to excellent service. Caneel Bay is the most peaceful, relaxing resort we have ever been to. Our next to last day at Caneel, we made reservations for next year.
We took quite a few digital photos of the rooms, beaches, and grounds and are happy to share those or answer questions for anyone who asks.
