“Very pretty”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

Another beautiful beach on St. John. I took a walk around here and did not get to snorkel, but was impressed with how clean and lovely the beach was.

“Beautiful Beach Minus the Crowds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

Just west of the ever popular Trunk Bay, is Hawksnest Bay beach. On your way up Route 20 to Trunk Bay, you'll pass Hawksnest which does provide a parking area. Though it does lack the many amenities (snacks, souvenirs, chair rentals, showers, etc.) of Trunk Bay, it is a must-see stop. You will need to bring what you need with you. There are pit toilets and a few picnic tables next to the parking area but that's about it.

As another reviewer noted, it doesn't offer much by way of snorkeling opportunities but we went to enjoy the beach. We visited on a Saturday early afternoon & found it largely empty. We were 2 of 12 people!

“Good Beach, Snorkeling Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2012

Would return for the beach experience, but not for the snorkeling. Can get a little crowded since it's the first beach with good parking as you head east out of Cruz Bay.

“Great snorkeling without the crowds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2012

Went on recommendations from locals and was not disappointed. Smaller beach and parking area than Trunk Bay, but there are a lot more reefs to explore and it was not hard to get a quarter mile from shore while exploring . . . all in water that you could dive to the bottom in. Lots of fish to watch and I even caught a glimse of a sea turtle skirting around the outer band of reefs. Go to Trunk if you want beach, sandy bottoms and crowds - go to Hawksnest if you want adventure/nature.

“a bit of a disappointment, but pretty”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

We went here after Waterlemon Cay and it was a bit disappointing. We swam out to the area of the elkhorn coral and what we saw was not all that impressive. Perhaps we didn't find the best spots. Beautiful beach if that is what you are after, but if you're looking for coral and fish there was not much to see.
