Owner description: This 2.2-mile hiking trail is one of the best on St. John: descend through a shady, moist forest and a dry forest, through visible remains of four sugar mills, pass by pre-Columbian petroglyphs, and end at a beautiful, pristine beach.

“A St John Must Do”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2014

This is a great ranger led hike. You take a taxi to the top of the trail and hike down to the water. Along the way you learn about trees, spiders, insects, plants, petroglyphs, ruins, birds. Our guide knew about everything! You learn about many aspects of the island and its natural and human history. Bring lunch and water, wear walking. When you reach the water a boat comes to pick you up and take you back to the beginning. When you need a break form the water and beach this is a great day.

“Great Hike!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2014

This is a great trail for those who love the outdoors! There are many ruins along the trail including petroglyphs, rock gates, living quarters and finally an old sugar mill at the end of the trail. There is also a gorgeous beach through the trees near the mill. I would not recommend this trail if traveling with small children.

“Take the Ranger Hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2014

We went on a great ranger led hike on this trail. I think they only do it on Mondays. We met at the NP headquarters in Cruz Bay where they taxied us to the trail head where we hiked down with the rangers pointing out all kinds of interesting facts about the plants, trees, wildlife, and history. We stopped at the petroglyphs for lunch. Unfortunately the water fall was dried up. then we hike down to the bay, where we swam out to a boat ( we could have taken a dinghy like our packs did) and were transported back to Crus Bay. Great activity. Well worth the nominal cost.

“Not what we expected.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2014

The hike was quite challenging with plenty hills and valleys and the trail was filled with loose rocks and ruts to navigate...but the biggest challenge was keeping up with Ranger Don Near. He walked the trail so fast, we all fell behind which made the hike very stressful. We felt terribly rushed and didn't have enough time to enjoy the beauty or take many pictures. We ended up at the beach nearly 2 hours early due to the fast pace. We would have enjoyed the hike more if we weren't so rushed.

“Tough hike~ but we love it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2014

The petroglyphs at the bottom of this hike are very cool. I'd love to see the waterfall flowing, but the reflecting pool was full. The hike back up is tough but all the sights (beach and sugar mill ruins) make it well worth it. Stay hydrated, don't hike hungry, and you'll be fine!
