1) Price - St. John has either camping or resorts. Serendip is between - affordable with amenities.
2) Service - Manager lives onsite and excellent resource. Met us at dock, helped get rental jeeps afterhours, made excellent recommendations. Reserve jeep thru Ted.
3) View – all rooms face gorgeous sunset!
4) Location – near town, grocery, main roads; in quiet neighborhood.

My 16 year son and I stayed at the Fiesta over Spring Break for a father and son getaway. This place was perfect for us. Each unit is privately owned and the owners of this unit have take special care on making it comfortable. It is an older property but it was equipped with everything you need and was spotless. They have thought of alot of small things to make your trip more enjoyable, such as beach chairs, beach bags, coolers, and plenty of books to read. There was also a small collection of DVD's but not too many hits for the teens. There seemed to be a trend of previous guests leaving sunscreen but probably good idea to bring your own just in case. There was also free wireless internet throughout the property and they even had a free electronic safe to put your valuables including the laptop while out for the day.

Fiesta is located on the second floor but is on the same level as the parking spot for the unit. The unit has a private bedroom with a comfortale king bed and TV/DVD that has plenty of channels. The living room, again, with its own TV/DVD has a wall bed, looks like a queen size and had a regular mattress that was quite comfortable. This is where my son slept but this had the best view of the condo. The unit does not have central air but two window units if you want AC. We kept the ceiling fans on with the windows open and always had a nice breeze. At night we would close up and turn on the AC's and it cooled down in no time. The only reason we did this was to keep out any noise of the neighborhood including the island roosters.

The condo is managed by a great guy, Ted, who goes out of his way to provide anything that we needed. He is quick to offer suggestions for activities and restaurants. He even called me the day of arrival to give me specific directions to the condo. As I mentioned earlier, this is an older place but Ted keeps it in top notch shape. While we were there, they added a hammock on the pool deck and there were people maintaining the beautiful landscaping. We spent very little time during the day at the condo and noticed while we were out one day someone had been washing and painting some of the exterior of the buiding. It is nice to see someone take pride in a property.

As a suggestion, we landed in St Thomas and rented our car there. You can go online and get a ferry schedule out of Red Hook they run almost every 1/2 hour. It only cost us $40 round trip and saved us the hassle of dealing with any taxis plus we picked up most of our groceries before leaving St Thomas. We discoverd a market store within 5 minutes of the condo so I think it may have been unneccessary to get groceries in St Thomas, but it probably saved some money. There were also quite a few things already in the condo that we wouldn't had to purchase if we would have checked it out first.

This was a great place for the value if you are looking for a clean comfortale place to stay. Keep up the good work Serendip hope to be back next year.

Recently, my husband and I got married in St. John. When trying to decide on a place to stay in St. John for our wedding we came across Serendip. From the start Ted, the manager, was VERY helpful. Both our families stated at Serendip too. Although the condos are a bit different from each other our families were happy and comfortable at a reasonable price. I would definately stay at Serendip again and recommend it to friends.

We stayed for a week the beginningof February 2009. Serendip is an older property but very neat and clean and tidy. Ted, the on site property manager was extremely friendly and showed us around and answered any questions we had. He also arranged our rental car when we booked the condo. Serendip is located in a residential area so it is nice and quiet and away from the hubbub of Cruz Bay, however you can drive to Cruz Bay in less than 5 minutes. Each unit is individually owned so they are all just a little bit different. The top 2 floors have the best views. We have stayed at 4 different places on St. John over the years and liked Serendip the best! Tom M.

My wife and I "travel". We do not "vacation". Therefore, we did not need a place to stay that catered to us. We wanted something clean, comfortable, safe, convenient, and affordable. Serendip is all of these.

It is not a fancy place. The unit we stayed in (Fiesta) is decorated in what I can only call "old Florida tacky". That is not to say it was ugly. To the contrary. It was a delightfully bright and cheerful place. The decor is colorful and whimsical. We loved it!

There is no central A/C. There are 2 window units - one in the bedroom and one in the sitting area. Other than that, the unit is kept at a comfortable and livable temperature by louvered windows and ceiling fans.

The open-all-the-time windows can be problematic if you are a stickler for complete privacy and quiet. If that is what you are looking for, you may not want to consider Serendip.

It is not luxurious. The bedroom is small, but very comfortable - lots of big cushy pillows. The bathroom, and especially the shower, are very small. I'm a big guy, and the small shower took some getting used to.

The landscaping and surrounding foilage is tropical, and with everything around us in full green, it was absolutely beautiful. The view from our balcony was directly west to St. John. The morning yellow birds, iguanas in the trees, and hummingbirds made the place seem even more exotic.

All units use a cistern fed water system. There was a lot of rain before we arrived and for the first 2 days we were there, so the cisterns were full. During peak season, you will need to keep your water use to a minimum.

The units all have off-island owners, and the complex is managed by the gregarious and friendly Ted. He is there for you when you need him with invaluable information about STJ - from the best beaches to the best BBQ.

Ted from Serendip was a great person to work with to help us get our recent anniversary trip to St. John squared away in advance. The rates at Serendip are very reasonable, and it is a very well maintained unit. We had some condensation issues with the a/c but otherwise it was a great stay there. We did put the pool to good use the first night we arrived, but chose beaches from there on out. There is a grill on the deck that is starting to get a bit weathered, but none the less, great to save some dollars if you want to stop by the market and get some good steaks or mahi fillets and do it yourself. I do suggest, if you plan on doing cooking, mail him a small care package of items such as: seasonings, alum. foil, EVOO/VEG oil, your favorite "value wine", etc. They do have good markets right down the road for steaks, lamb or fresh catch. You will read many forums that people pack coolers of meat...don't waste your effort. I come from KC and I will tell you the steaks at the market are very reasonable and of choice quality. I was very suprised to see the prices and quality of lamb...

But back to the resort, good view. We stayed in the India unit, and if you are looking for a couple's retreat, this is the one for the buck. it has it's own parking spot about four steps away from your deck. right down the road from the markets, and the madness that is Cruz bay. We will stay here again when we come down to the island next year. Thanks Ted for running a great establishment.

  • Liked — Very well maintained grounds, looked very lush and clean
  • Disliked — the bed was two twins put together instead of a queen

My husband and I stayed in Serendip Condos in May ’07. Tom, the owner, was very friendly and always around to answer any questions we had. The location was fine, even though it was not waterfront, but situated in a residential area—it didn’t matter to us, because we were usually gone all day visiting the different beaches and driving all over the island. It’s also just outside of Cruz Bay so you are close to the grocery store & restaurants.

We stayed in the Juliette unit, and it had a big patio and nice view. As the other reviewer below mentioned, I too thought that the condo could definitely use an updated comforter and sheets on the bed. They were clean, but the multi-colored sheets just looked totally outdated. Also, since the condos are older, a new coat of fresh paint would make a huge difference, and a better shower curtain. My other negative thing was that every now and then, when sitting on the patio, we could smell some kind of sewage smell. I think maybe the sewage treatment facility was not far from there. But it wasn’t that bad, just occasionally…. Of course that is not within the owner’s control. The condo grounds are very well maintained, lots of pretty flowers and plants. They also have a brand new deck and swimming pool, although we did not use it.

All in all, Serendip was a fine place to sleep if you are looking for a ‘budget’ accommodation for 2 in St John. Definitely a great bargain compared to the prices of most accommodations on St. John.

  • Liked — location, price, the lush, tropical grounds, view
  • Disliked — could use some MINOR updates, occasional sewage smell while sitting outside
