Have taken the ferry many times, nice that the St John location is right in the heart of downtown so you can get your tickets in advance and cruz around the downtown area.

“you don't have much choice, so deal with it!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

The resorts seem to have their own shuttles, if you are renting a house, like we did, you have to use the ferry.
The actual ride is fine, what I did not like is the young man working on the boat said to me, as he took my luggage, don't forget to tip the guys on the way off the boat. He was the guy on the way off! I did not like being told to tip. This was the only poor service from anyone on the entire trip to St John.
Terminal is very organized, big plus.

“Easy transport”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2014

The Red Hook ferry runs every hour to Cruz Bay St. John. It is relatively inexpensive but they do charge for luggage ($4 per piece when we were there). It's a short 15-minute ride over to St. John. While waiting for the ferry, there's a nice little bar and friendly bartender to pass the time. They also have clean restrooms on site. Given the abundance of taxis on St. John for a day trip, the ferry is a great option - note that this shouldn't be confused with the car ferry, which is separate.

“Nice for a ferry...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2014

Well it's more of a necessary trip than an ATTRACTION but it's a pretty quick, smooth trip. If you're sitting on the outside edge of the bottom level, you might get splashed...potentially a lot. The top deck is uncovered, so if you don't want to be splashed OR in the sun then pick a middle lower seat.

“Getting there is not pretty!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2014

We took the Red Hook ferry to St. John, then took the Charlotte Amalie ferry back when we left. For Red Hook, there is about a 45 minute taxi ride through the "not so pretty" parts of St. Thomas, followed by a 20 minute ferry ride to St. John. For Charlotte Amalie, the ferry is a beautiful 45 minute ride, followed by a very short 10 minute taxi ride through the beautiful parts of St. Thomas. Cost was a bit lower for the Charlotte Amalie trip, as well. I'd much rather spend my travel time viewing the beautiful St. Thomas coastline on the ferry than riding through the St. Thomas back roads in a crowded taxi.
