The Grande Bay will gladly send a car to pick you up at the pier, but unless you are buried under luggage there's no need to: it's a few hundred meter's walk and you definitely can't miss it as it dominates the Crux Bay waterfront. Yeah, it's that big one to the right.
The accomodation system is a bit complicated as this is one ofthose resorts that are a mix of rentals, owned, time-share, and (in our case) owned but using the resort office to manage a private rent-out. Sound complicated? Well, for the most part this was invisible to us, except there are several "front offices" (in adjoining offices!) and you have to figure out which one applies to you. The suite itself was incredible - we had one of the two penthouses and it was overwhelming in every way, including (no kidding) three different full patios facing different sides of the island. Since this was a private rental masquarading as a resort rental, you might not get such a good deal but we initially say one of the "regular" rentals and it was still pretty nice. Which leads me to one of the two reasons for the star off..
...The management, while incredibly friendly and helpful, is a bit incompetent. So for example, we were initially shown into a regular room. Nice, but, um, gee - this doesn't look like what I agreed to. Oh, you're JEFF? Okay, let me get the keys and show you the right room. Lots of things like that. On the other hand, I cannot praise them enough for their willingness to help: I left my glasses in the rental Jepp (more on that in a moment) and by the time I realized it, they had already re-rented the vehicle and it was gone. I would have been willing to pay for them to ship the glasses (it was, after all, entirely my fault) but one day the glasses just showed up in my mail, prepaid. The management really does take good care of you.
There's no on-site eats but Cruz Bay and all its stores and restaurants are essentially the same distance as walking to the lobby of a typical big resort Marriott. It is extremely quiet in the resort, but five minutes walking to as much noisy cheap tourist bars as you can handle. Perfect!
The resort has its own beach BUT - it's a small beach that is habited by large dogs and drunk tourists. In other words, avoid it unless you like lots of dog crap and broken glass. I hate to ding the resort for this, after all it's not something they have direct control over (USVI law) but if you expect to go swimming right at the resort, think again. Very few resorts have their own really useful beach in St. John. BTW this was the only beach I actually say glass (and there's a LOT of it) but the glass bottle issue is rampant - I saw drunk tourists with glass beer bottles everywhere, even after-hours at Trunk Bay where technically it's a federal crime. The Rangers really need to start ticketing people.
One final part of the star off - the resort rents vehicles but ONLY four-door Wranglers. This is a terrible car both for St. John in general and the Grande Bay in particular, as it has a very long wheelbase and a ridiculously wide turning radius - kind of the opposite of what a Jeep is supposed to be! Several times on the infamous St. John switchbacks we had to stop, back up, and turn a second (and once, a third) time to get around the turn because the Jeep cannot turn as sharply as the corner. And believe me, a St. John switchback is not the place you want to be doing this!* And the resort's parking spaces leave literally inches to spare around a four-door Wrangler, making parking a real chore best done with one person driving and another giving directions.
*Don't let this or the other reviews about how murderously horrible the roads are dissuade you from St. John. Those reviewers have never been anywhere that have REAL scary roads, like Maui's Hana Road or anywhere in southern St. Kitts. I wouldn't drive a scooter in the rain there but with a car with any kind of power, you'll be fine.
Didn't get to actually use the gym but it looked great, and the pool is heated during the night. Very nice hot tub/whirlpool, too.
In conclusion: great time, great bargain, great resort. Just be a little patient, they are trying...
