“A Slice of Heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

We have been to the island 4 times and we have stayed at different villas and they where all very nice. Gallows Point in Cruz Bay provided benchmark service at a great value. Rooms where great neat and clean as well as extremely well maintained!! Close to town easy walk for all the great local restaurants and Zozo's restaurant conveniently located in the resort. A place to park your rental jeep, towels for the pool and beach as well as complimentary beach chairs to use daily!
Awesome value we will be back very soon!!!

Thr resort is NOT an hotel (it is self catering) but you can get food, etc. items from a nice little shop on site. We had a lower floor apartment with balcony about 10 feet above ground level overlooking the harbour (it was shady and didn't get direct sun); lots of activites to watch. The resort is excellent and so close to Cruz Bay that you can walk to the restaurants. The resort will collect you from the ferry from St Thomas if you don't bring a car.
No beach, as such, but access for snorkling, etc. with well looked after gardens, sun terraces and a small pool. Units overlooking the sea (rather than the harbour) get full sun and a great view towards St Thomas. Our apartment was very nice and well looked after / attended every day.
Worth having a car to get around the island but, be warned, the hills are very steep and traction with a two wheel drive in the wet can be 'interesting'. Also interesting is driving left hand drive cars on the LEFT side of the road.
Gallows Point is probably the best place to stay on St John - it is lovely.

Room Tip: Harbour facing rooms have shade and are quieter (apart from the boats!)

We just returned from a 9 day 8 night trip to St John - the most wonderful place we've EVER been. Gallows Point Resort was fabulous!!! Clean! Staff was wonderful and helpful! ZoZo's was awesome! Easy walk to town for shopping, restaurants, etc. Gallows Point Gift Shop can and will set up tours, diving, etc for you - they will also stock your room with food/drinks before you arrive. We stayed in Unit 3A - the most beautiful view!!!! I cannot wait to go back next year!!!

We stayed in 14C which is an upper loft unit facing Cruz Bay. The room was nicely appointed and we loved that there was a cooler and beach towels in the unit and beach chairs were available at the front desk. However, these units have a skylight directly above the bed. No window treatment. The light would wake us up at about 5:45. We would go back, but we will pick an ocean side lower level unit. (Ocean side is much quieter)

Room Tip: Pick a lower ocean side room.

My husband and I came back to St. John for our 25th anniversary. We were married here and renewed our vows at the same church where we were married with the same pastor. We had a lower level condo at Gallows facing the bay. Easy walk to town for shopping, restaurants and excursions to other islances, sailing, etc. Nice hikes to Soloman Beach, Honeymoom Beach and Caneel Bay from the town. The staff was exceedingly friendly. We visited two other resorts for lunch for comparison: Westin and Caneel Bay. Caneel Bay staff were not friendly in the restaurant, confirmed later by a couple staying there who had stayed mutliple times. They said they wouldn't come back to Caneel. Westin was beautiful but you'd have to take a taxi cab to anyplace with very, very steep hill for walking to grocery store. For us, Gallows Point was perfect. We love to hike, walk, sail and hang out at the beach. ZoZo's restaurant had gourmet quality food but on the high end price wise. The gift shop, concierge was great with good selection of food. They booked our two 1/2 day sailing trips through the concierge on Cloud 9 Beneteau sloops - 40' and 46'. Very nice, knowledgeable sailors. Amazing snorkeling! The grounds at Gallows Point are lush and very well kept. We loved the terraced patios overlooking the water for chilling out. We also enjoyed swimming and snorkeling at the resort. We would definitely stay there again next time we come back. Hopefully, we won't wait for our 50th anniversary!

Room Tip: I don't see how you could go wrong with any unit there. Both harbor and ocean views are beautifu...

My husband and I try to visit a new Caribbean island every year but decided to go back to Gallows because it was pretty close to perfect. Our first visit we stayed in 7D and it was very nice. This year we stayed in 6C which was even better. Both are ocean view upper units. 6c was completely updated and had the most comfortable bed which makes for a very relaxing vacation and is very important to us. It was pretty close to Zozo's and while sitting out on the deck you could hear some noise but we bring a white noise maker for sleeping so I'm not sure if it would have kept us up otherwise. I liked that it was so close to the front desk and store and was perfect for us. The front desk is still hit or miss as before. Sometimes they are nice and sometimes you are just bothering them. They should really work on getting friendlier staff at the front desk. We are very considerate people and don't ask for much so we should Never feel like we are bothering someone if it is their job to help. The store on site is fantastic. Everyone is so nice and helpful with the exception of our first visit. My husband picked up a 6 pack of local beer and was carrying it around while shopping when the bottom completely fell out and all 6 beers shattered on the ground. The bottom must have been wet. My husband felt awful and kept apologizing but the girl behind the counter (Missy) just gave him a dirty look and didn't say a word. My husband and another customer got the broom and cleaned it up. She didn't even say thank you or don't feel bad or anything. Just silence. We never saw her again and all other interactions were extremely friendly. They now serve some breakfast items which is very convenient. We ordered the bagel breakfast sandwiches which were outstanding. Gallows doesn't have a standard beach but has fantastic snorkeling which is high on our list. Being close to town is awesome and a nice way to work off a little of your meal on your way back to your room. We went to caneel one day and hung out on the beach and snorkeled. Pretty good snorkeling. Saw a big sea turtle which was nice. It is way too far from own to stay here but it is nice to visit once. We also had lunch which was really good at the open air restaurant beside the beach.
We took a boat charter for the day with Palm Tree Charters. Highly recommend this particular trip. Captain John is fantastic and will take you wherever you want to go. I know why he doesn't get bad reviews.
Zozo's was our favorite dinner. Make a 6pm reservation to sit at the bar and watch the sunset and just eat your meal at the bar. Reserve well in advance. I was afraid it would be too hot and after a day in the sun the last thing I would want to do is sit in the sun for another hour but it was absolutely perfect. Not hot at all and just bring your sunglasses and your camera and you will be good to go. We ordered the mahi mahi, New York strip, bruschetta, squid ink pasta and prosciutto appetizer and all were just fantastic.
Our first meal was at Rhumb Lines which was just ok. Everyone else we spoke to really liked it so we must have ordered the wrong food.
We ate at The Terrace one night which was really good and a fantastic view from the deck.
The cleaning staff was extremely respectful of our privacy and did a fantastic job.
This is the only place to stay while in St John. Hotel services with a private villa atmosphere.
We made all of our dinner reservations and activity reservations before arriving which I highly recommend. Waiting until you arrive really limits your options because all of the good stuff fills up quickly.

My husband and I stayed at Gallows Point 20 years ago on our honeymoon. We recently returned for our 20th anniversary and the views from Gallows Point are still the best! We've stayed in other places on St. John but, after returning to Gallows Point this year, this is the only place we will stay on the island going forward. The upper rooms have four large double doors:two of them open to a balcony overlooking the ocean and the other two function as windows if you want to open them for a cross breeze.

There is a cozy loft bedroom. My only complaint was the quality of the sheets. They were not very soft and felt like something from Wal-Mart...and this was before I got sunburned!

The snorkeling is good right off the beach and the resort is within walking distance of Cruz Bay. Even though we rented a jeep for the week, we walked into town every day....very safe.
