“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

St. John is a unique place and something to see. Lots of protected park lands and famous, gorgeous bays and beaches. There is virtually no commercial development around - just some shops and restaurants in town. You see in this review category that there are very few places to stay on the island. This is the best.
What doesn't come out clearly in the multiple reviews below is an explanation that there are two separate parts to this resort: hotel rooms on the flat area surrounding a huge pool and bordering a beautiful bay - plus "villas" in three separate areas of the property which are part of Starwood's timeshare program. They contain nice kitchen/dining room/living room facilities. Either you book a regular hotel room, own a timeshare on the property, or trade in through the timeshare system.
Wherever you stay, you'll enjoy the experience.
We were a group of 6 friends staying in a three-bedroom villa for a week. The grounds are extensive, beautiful, and well kept. Various buildings are going through updating, and we were thrilled to have all brand new appliances in our place. We were able to cook in a few times and enjoy our privacy. Only one negative of the whole trip: the carpeting throughout our villa needs to be replaced.
The staff was very accommodating and always eager to help. We had no problem getting shuttle service with their golf carts.
On-site car rental firm O'Connor was convenient. We rented for one day and used the handy taxi service the rest of the time to go into town.
The market a few steps away was handy; Starfish Market just over the hill was more complete.
If you have a group, we highly recommend using the on-site boat rental company Nauti Nymph and hire your own powerboat. You see a lot more, and it is on your own time. Or take the regular catamaran trip to do some snorkeling and get over to the British Virgin Islands (take your passport).
You'll want to go back - we do!

My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon, and we absolutely loved the resort, the island of St John and the surrounding Virgin Islands. The staff was very accommodation and the villas were clean, comfortable and felt like home.

The overall vacation experience as newlyweds was great and it looked like there was a lot of families there as well. They have a nice market walking distance from the property towards town that has all the grocery items you will need. There is also always nice open air truck taxis available up front that would take you in town for only $5 - definitely the way to travel into Cruz Bay and to most of the nearby beaches on the north shore.

The beach at the Westin is very nice. You have great views of the houses on the hills in the bay, lots of space and nice sand, including free umbrellas and rafts that are great for chilling in the water with your drink (aka Bushwacker) - yes please!

There are cool cats and iguanas that run wild throughout the island, they seem domesticated at this point as all the guests enjoy spoiling them.

We took the day trip boat up to the Virgin Gorda in the BVI - highly recommended. You go up through Tortola to hit customs, then up to the Virgin Baths in Virgin Gorda to swim, snorkel and explore, lunch at this great little Cafe on Cooper Island, got some great snorkeling in at the Caves on Norman Island, before you head back before sunset. Did I mention its highly recommended ?!?

We got to grill/cook out a couple nights and head into town for happy hour/sunset/dinner. Make sure you drink as many Bushwackers as possible.. if you dont know, now you know!

Westin St John + Bushwackers = Do It!!

Room Tip: We stayed up on the hill in one of the Villas. It was perfect, high enough up to have a great view o...

We stayed at the Westin St. John from 4/17/13 to 5/4/13. I had read the reviews for weeks before we left and must admit I was confused. But let me tell you something. There is nothing confusing about the Westin. It was absolutely beautiful and we were treated wonderfully. Our room was perfect. We had a garden view room which also had quite a view of the bay. Could not have asked for a nicer room or location. We were in the 21 building. I had read many reviews about the resort being tired and the staff being unfriendly or indifferent. Not sure where those people stayed or if they are just plain snobs and expect people to bend over at their feet.. Seriously people. We are middle class and we were celebrating our anniversary and it could not have been more perfect. We came back to the room to find champaigne! We also rented our car from O'Connor Rental right on site and had absolutely no problems. It was very convenient and the cost was the same as the rental places in town.

Breakfast was a little pricey, but hey, we grabbed a box of cereal and some milk from the store and ate in our room a few days. There is free Starbucks coffee in the room!

Can't say enough-wonderful vacation. Would highly recommend the Westin to anyone! Loved it.

My 7 night stay on gorgeous St. John was my favorite vacation ever as I'm an outdoorsy gal who loves to hike and snorkel. The Westin played a great “supporting role.” As a platinum SPG member, I used SPG points for 6/7 nights and my husband’s government rate (only $165! ) for the remaining night. The key word about the Westin is convenience. The Jeep rental on site was quick and seamless (remember to bring your proof of insurance). The open air taxis run every 5 minutes to downtown Cruz Bay where all the restaurants/shops/bars are located and cost $6 per person or $10 per couple each way. To take advantage of the $40 resort fee, we played ping pong and basketball, used the rafts in the ocean/pool, and parked our Jeep for ‘free.’ You can also use their paddleboards, kayaks, play billiards, attend yoga, poolside movies at night, etc. as part of the resort fee. I would agree that this is a family resort, so expect a lot of children. Some key “sneaky” things to note:

- As a platinum member you get a platinum amenity, and most people usually choose the 500 points. Since we used the ferry service, we didn’t have to check in at the front – they pre-check you in and you can go straight to your room (very convenient) BUT they automatically opted me into the typical 500 points. Rather than the 500 points, if you go to the front desk you can opt into a free continental breakfast for you and your guest every single day. The continental breakfast usually costs $20 per person! We got that free for 7 mornings which would cost $280. Definitely do the breakfast instead of the points. Note: make sure you know what is continental versus the full buffet. The waitress didn’t explain it to us the first day so we got hot items like eggs and bacon and then she tried to charge us an up-charge. So make sure to ask.

- There is a whirlpool in the pool area but it’s kind of tucked away by one of the pool-side buildings

- If you ask the front desk, you can use SPG points to pay for food, facials/massages, etc.

- If you don’t want to get wet on the ferry boat, I advise sitting on the lower covered area or inside in the very bottom. We sat on the very top of the boat and got drenched – which we found fun but others were less amused

I saw others complain about how they were charged their free suite night awards for being upgraded from a garden view room to a pool view room, but this did not happen to me. They upgraded us to the pool view room, but didn’t take away my suite award credits.

Onto the island itself: we are big hikers so we rented a Jeep to take us to all the great hikes. Our favorites: Ram Head Trail, Reef Bay Trail, and Margaret Hill Trail (with a 360 degree lookout tower of the USVIs and BVIs). Favorite beaches were Solomon Beach and Ram Head Beach at the end of the trail. Favorite restaurants: Lime Inn (great chowder and Greek salad), La Tapa (great mussels), Tourist Trap (in Coral Bay – great tacos and nachos for lunch). I would definitely head to Coral Bay for a different perspective of the island. Also if you need to park your Jeep in Cruz Bay, we always just parked for free in the huge car ferry lot and never had an issue. Enjoy!!!

The Westin met our expectations for a 5 day vacation with 2 couples. Just as described it is an older property but well maintained. The food was very good especially the salads. The rooms were fine but location was fantastic. The overall resort is very well laid out and has easy access to any amenities. The car rental place on the property was a hit! Gym actuallly exceeded expectations.

Room Tip: Rooms in the 10 building are perfect.

First, there is no doubt the Westin is a beautiful place with nice grounds, a great pool, and nice beach. The rooms are nothing special especially for the price, and add100 bucks per day for taxes. The food is good too, especially breakfast. So here's my take. Great place if you like a resorty type vacation with pool replete with sunburned newly weds, kids, and a beach in a marina (there is no pump station nearby and as a sailor I can tell you odds are those lives boards are pumping out in the marina). Staff is like anywhere else, some nice, some not so nice. This is not a great quiet couples place or a great place to snorkel or boat. In general though, if younaremwillingmtompay top dollar and you want a guaranteed good resort experience where you don't have much water experience and you just want to hang and drink, go for it. If you are a young family, it's perfect.

We stayed in Villa #3426 from 4/30-5/3. A quick little get away for my husband and I. The view was beautiful from up on the hill. The villa was a nice size, 2 full bathrooms, washer, dryer, everything we needed. The bed is among the most comfortable we have had in a resort. It was VERY clean and updated. I had read that some of the rooms were outdated, this was most definitely NOT TRUE!
I was a little apprehensive about the staff after reading some of the reviews on here, but we had a lovely experience with each staff member we met.
There are golf carts to take guests from the villas down to the beach, restaurant, etc. We didn't utilize this service since we rented a Jeep. There are also taxis always available to take guests into town and O'Connor rental cars is on site.
The beach was clean and spacious. Plenty of chairs. We didn't use the pool, but it was clean, and there were plenty of chairs again. We used the gym once, and it was nice. The cardio area was nicely equipped. We had a bucket of VooDoo juice from the pool bar, and it was delicious.
I would recommend this resort to anyone. We will definitely return, perhaps next time with our kids!!

Room Tip: Villa rooms are very quiet and private!
