Reviews on this site helped me to have realistic expectations about this resort. I wouldn't have paid for it, but we used Starwood points for two free rooms that that helped me to go with the flow more so than if I'd paid $500+.
The staff was actually nicer than I expected. Good by Carribean standards.
The food was pretty bad, but not horrible.
The place is full of kids and very family friendly. All the children I saw were well-behaved.
My children enjoyed the kid's club largely because they let them watch TV (a no-no at home). The staff there was friendly and I felt comfortable leaving my kids, but it's a just a babysitting service, nothing more. Which is fine. I thought it was priced appropriately.
There's a deli that we often got sandwiches from since the food at the restaurants was bad. I thought the prices there were not excessive for St John. A half-gallon of organic milk at the market costs almost $7, so that gives you some sense of prices.
There are floating trampolines at the beach which are in poor repair and (IMO) potentially insafe. I didn't say anything but should have. There were large gaps were the rusty springs had given way and the ?bouncing membrane? had broken away from the perimeter and a child (or adult) struggling to climb up could inadvertantly take a header, and possibly get stuck.
I was pretty shocked by the condition of the rooms. The tops of the dressers and nightstands was some sort of texured laminate that was peeling off. The glass covering the bare bulbs of the bathroom light fixures was broken IN BOTH ROOMS. The carpet was old and the paint job looked amateur. The popcorn ceilings were low. The backing was peeling away on both bathroom mirrors all around the perimeter. The walls behind the toilets looked kind of gross. The a/c in one room didn't work. We called them and they basically said, oh yeah, were moving ducts so it works, but it doesn't work. Whatever. It wasn't that hot, but what if it had been? They knew the a/c didn't work and they didn't care or have any plans to fix it.
We went to the timeshare presentation to try to recoup some Starwood points and they said flat out that they weren't maintaining those rooms becasue they intended to gut the building to create more timeshare units. I can't imagine how they will maintain this place once they've got all the timeshares sold.
We weren't going to bother to complain because we'd been forewarned and hadn't paid for it, but the idea of some young family or honeymooners saving up for this dump makes me kind of sick to my stomach, so I asked my husband to mention the condition of the rooms when he checked out. He told them that he's a platinum Starwood member and has stayed at Westins all over the world and has never had a room even close to these in terms of condition. They repeated what the timeshare guy said - we aren't doing any maintenance on those buildings. Nice.
If you can stay for free and have low expectations it can still be a great trip. We rented a car and went to a different beach every day (the beach at the Westin isn't great). But if you are paying go to Caneel on St. John or a different island. You can do way, way better for the same price.
