We ate at Asolare twice in the week we were in St John. It was very good, especially the first time, but was a little inconsistent, with our second visit being a little less enjoyable. This might have been in part due to the wait-staff - on the second visit the waitress was less attentive, failed to describe a very important feature of the special (described as a shrimp bisque, but in fact it was a variation on a bisque with jerk-style spices, and a lot of pepper, making it nothing like a traditional bisque. This latter point was omitted, resulting in my wife having a less-than-satisfactory dinner, as she cannot handle the spiciness. Nevertheless, it was well done, so it was difficult to send back, but a better description would have averted this), spilled wine and water, and mixed up glassware. Similarly, the vegetable curry was not at all spicy one night, but rather more heavily spiced the next. Like I said - inconsistent.
The duck breast was spectacular, as was the Corvina. The best appetizer was likely the ceviche, made with snapper when we were there (this will change, depending on availability). The pork belly was good, but a bit salty. We had the churassco of steak, but asked to reduce the rub, because it was too salty the first night. Reducing the seasoning improved it considerably.
The bar is well stocked, and the barman was very hospitable and knowledgeable. The view is spectacular, and tables mostly overlook the balcony to provide a great view of the harbor.
Dinner for 6, with 2 bottles of wine, ran between $450 and $550 with gratuity, but several of our party did not get both an appetizer and main, so this could increase for gourmands. Mains run about $30-45 per plate.
