“Would not stay anywhere else in the USVI -- the best location and hospitality!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2009

My husband and I booked a week at the Sailview for our honeymoon and could not have had a better experience. The location is off the beaten path which is exactly what we were looking for (no crowds and mobs of other tourists). The rooms are lovely and offer everything you could need -- small fridge (stocked by our thoughtful hosts), TV for the evenings (or on the off chance it rains), books, patio, coffee maker etc. The location was also great -- overlooking Coral bay which is much less bustling than Cruz Bay but still offers great restaurants, music, shops and beaches not far away.

Despite the location and beautiful deck, custom tile and other touches -- what makes the Sailview so fabulous is the hosts. Eileen and Mike, the owners of Sailview, are the most hospitable and lovely people! They truly made our stay fabulous from the food and champagne in the fridge to the great conversations on the deck. They are there if you need them but you have complete privacy as well. From the moment I spotted Mike waiting for us at the ferry dock wearing a fedora with martini in hand I knew we had chosen the right place. It is people like Mike and Eileen who you meet on your travels who make them so memorable. We definately plan to return one day -- perhaps for an annaversary!

A few suggestions: You must rent a car -- and reserve it ahead of time! While we made the mistake of assuming we could show up without a reservation, Eileen saved us by calling me the week of the wedding and letting me know there was only one vehicle left for rent the week we were arriving!
Definately go on some hikes -- the island has beautiful protected park land. Have a Painkiller (or two) -- in fact, if you can take a day trip, go to Jost Van Dyke (I recommend the New Horizons II ) to have an original one at the Soggy Dollar Bar. Don't just stick to Trunk Bay. We enjoyed the beaches at Cinnamon Bay and Salt Pond Bay (not so crowded). Check out Vi's Snack Shack and definately get BBQ from the little stand in Cruz Bay. Oh -- and the breakfast burritos at the Mojo Cafe in Cruz Bay are great too.

My husband and I spent our Honeymoon at the Sailview Inn and were more than pleased with our choice. Mike and Eileen went out of their way to see that our special occassion was memorable. Not only did they provide gifts (i.e. a card, champagne, and a St. John pictorial book), but necessities like bug spray, snacks, and beach amenities. We even used the outdoor BBQ area a couple of times for dinner. Eileen is always available to give you advice on the places to snorkel, hike, and eat. Mike provides a good mix of sailing stories, cocktails, and artistic flair. Coral Bay is much more quiet, romantic, and beautiful than Cruz Bay. Even though this was our first time to St. John and the Caribbean, we give the Sailview Inn and its hosts five stars and wouldn't stay anywhere else.

While it's true that Sailview is immaculately clean, beautifully furnished and nicely appointed - what sets it apart from other rentals is the hospitality and warmth of its owners - Mike & Eileen.

The guest suites are handsomely furnished with hand-made furniture, the tile work on the floors and bathroom tilework is gorgeous. The bedding is luxurious and the fridge and cupboards nicely stocked. Soft drinks, coffee, creamer, yogurt, fresh fruit, granola bars, chips and home-made bread is all provided by the hosts. The expected beach chairs, cooler and beach towels are of course available. They even provide a hand-held electronic bug zapper for those times when the skeeters are troublesome. We personally did not experience a problem. Free Wifi is available and we find it very useful for keeping in touch with friends and family at home.

Barbeque grill, sink, dishes and all the utensils are available for those who want to cook their own meals. The deck and porches all have lovely views with great Caribbean breezes.

Mike & Eileen are very respectful of their guests' privacy. If privacy is what you seek - you will hardly ever see them. But - They are also very friendly and willing to share stories and island tips with those who ask. This was our second stay at Sailview and we are looking forward to the next time we can stay with Mike & Eileen.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at Sailview in early April. We wanted a choice that was not a resort atmosphere to encourage us to get out and do some exploring.

Eileen and Mike were wonderful hosts. Eileen met us at the ferry and helped us get our rental car. She helped us settle in and then provided a map for us of the area that she marked with popular restaurants and good snorkeling. The room was very clean and very nicely decorated. We loved having them nearby if we wanted a restaurant recommendation, but as hosts, they truly were unobtrusive. The view was great from Sailview and we enjoyed fresh fruit and bread with some coffee (all provided by Eileen) while sitting on our private patio. Other travelers on the beach commented how lucky we were to have hosts that provided towels, chairs, and a cooler to use. The location was very close to the restaurants and store in Coral Bay, the sleepy side of the island. You DO need a JEEP! Trips back to Cruz Bay for activities took a quick 20 minutes.

Our stay was easy to set up, very inexpensive, and a truly blissful experience. Would love to come see them again soon!

After hours of internet browing and comparison shopping we picked Sailview for our 1st trip to St. John's and we hit gold!
The guesthouse has everthing a traveler hopes for. The hosts went out of their way to make our trip pleasant and convenient- Mike met us at the ferry, Eileen showed us around, gave us detailed info regarding beaches, essentials, restaurants etc.
The well appointed room met all our needs with its quiet location, deck with a great view, well stocked fridge and pantry, beach supplies, grilling amenities if you're so inclined, and its easy proximity to all of Coral Bay's attractions.
It felt like we were in good hands, amongst friends. All this at great rates!
After a fabulous vacation we are, of course now in love with St. John's and are already making plans to visit again and often. Luckily, we have a great place to stay!

Just returned at 2:30am this morning from our week at Sailview. Mike and Eileen have meticulously created "a true paradise on earth" for themselves and unselfishly share it with guests.
We loved our room/long lazy mornings sipping coffee and "drinking in those views" as-well-as afternoons snorkeling at the various beaches/evenings on the deck/dinners at area restaurants/we could go on and on. Mike and Eileen know where to go and what to do and went out of their way to make our trip JUST RIGHT!!!

We had a great time at Sailview this past January. Mike was kind enough to pick us up at the ferry, and Eileen dropped us off at the car rental office the next morning. Both hosts are
very kind and go out of their way to ensure that you have
everything you need. Honestly, they were incredible hosts!

The room is a fantastic value. Comfortable bed, tv with dvds, a fridge stocked with coffee, delicious fresh bread, water, yogurt, and snacks.
The balcony has a gorgeous view, great place to have your morning coffee. We saw hummingbirds on the balcony each morning. All in all, a great deal on an otherwise relatively expensive island.

You can walk to skinny legs for dinner, which we did the first night since we did not have our rental car yet. However, I recommend renting a car for most of your stay. The beaches on the sailview side of the island were nicer than the beaches on the other side of the island (in our opinion).

There is also a shared patio with facilities for cooking- but we didn't bother cooking! But that is an option if you are interested.

Cons- there were a lot of bugs in our room. There is a screen,
and we were careful opening and closing our door, but somehow
we were bit every night by mosquitoes (which we saw in our room). A mosquito net around the bed might be a good addition to the room.

All in all, I would highly recommend sailview.
