“Fantastic Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2012

We booked a day sail with Alaunt Charters and it was the highlight of our trip. Ron and Carol are extremely knowledgeable about the area and sailing. Be sure to ask about the history of the boat. Lunch was fantastic and the snorkeling was amazing. They knew all the good spots to go. They would be my first choice on a future day sail out of St Thomas.

“You will not regret booking this private sailing experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2012

My sister and I decided to take this private excursion, based on a recommendation from a friend who had booked and enjoyed a similar experience recently. We emailed Captain Ron about 10 days before our cruise to St. Thomas and both he and his mate, Carol, answered all my questions promptly! It is a private experience, with only 6 people on the sailboat, which is one of the things that attracted my attention. Tired of bumping into people on large boats and in overcrowded snorkeling bays, I was looking for something peaceful and fun! It was that, and much more. We took the full day sail, which was from 9 am to 3 pm (Atlantic Standard Time). There is also a half day available.

Getting to American Yacht Harbor in Red Hook was probably the trickiest part of the excursion, although it was only because the folks who were putting us in taxis at Crown Bay underestimated the time it would take to get there. They will tell you 20 minutes but it took us about 45 minutes each way, so plan for that.

Once we got to American Yacht Harbor, Captain Ron was waiting for us to take us to his sailboat. We got on board, had safety instructions and met our fellow travelers and were on our way. We were fortunate that it was a lovely day, with sunshine, some clouds and calm waters.

Captain Ron and his mate, Carol, were gracious hosts, offering drinks (both alcoholic and non) from the moment we got on board. A mid-morning snack of fruit and freshly made banana nut bread was a greatly appreciated treat. We sailed over toward St. John's and were offered an interesting background of the different islands and cays by Carol. We snorkeled twice during the day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Alaunt provided all of the snorkeling gear, which was clean and of high quality. You are also welcome to bring your own. Part of the charm was being able to snorkel in such a small group. While we were snorkeling in the late morning, Carol and Captain Ron were fixing us a delightful Caribbean lunch. After about 45 minutes in the water, we re-boarded and ate lunch, which was excellent!

We sailed close to another cay in the afternoon and then headed back to port. The personal touches of Carol and Captain Ron were greatly appreciated and I can't stress enough their hospitality and personalization. One of the other people on board wasn't very interested in snorkeling and they offered to take her over to the beach while the rest of us enjoyed our experience. That kind of personalization won't be found on a larger excursion.

All in all, this was a great value for our money. They take cash or credit but you get a discount for paying cash so this 6 hours cost us each $125. It was worth every penny!
