After visiting the hotel in 2011 for our 20th wedding anniversary, we decided to return with our three young children (ages 12, 12 and 9) for our spring break vacation this year. We used VRBO to rent a two-bedroom unit in the Ritz-Carlton Club section of the property. Overall, it was an amazing vacation. All five of us thoroughly enjoyed the pools, proximity to the bay, Hobie catamarans, paddle boards and paddle boats. The most amazing part of this resort is the view. The crystal clear turquoise and sapphire waters of Great Bay and the gorgeous view of St. John are unequaled. My children built sand castles and snorkeled off the beaches for hours every day. I particularly loved the big shade trees on the beaches. I am usually ready to leave for home on the last day of vacation but I really could have stayed for another week.
We rented a car at the airport and drove to the resort. We drove to Red Hook for dinner one night (Fish Tails...very yummy) and then drove to Red Hook and took the ferry to St. John for dinner (Morgan's Mango) another night. We dined at Coconut Cove two nights, Bleu Water one night and ordered room service another night. All the Ritz food was great. I thought the kids' meals were very well priced...$10 for anything on the menu. My son had the Kid's Catch of the Day several times and loved it. The adult entrees were pricey but that would be the same at any resort in the Caribbean. We packed some food in our checked luggage and also preordered groceries through the concierge (eggs, milk, cheese, bread) so we were able to eat breakfast in every day.
We sailed on the Lady Lynsey for an afternoon snorkel cruise midweek. The crew was very professional and friendly. We sailed to Christmas Cove, past Little St. James, and saw amazing numbers of cool fish. A heavy snack was provided during the sail home along with open bar. My daughter was quite apprehensive about sailing in the ocean but pronounced it the highlight of her trip when someone asked her after we returned home.
Negatives...the unit we rented (Jasmine 2102) was on the ground floor so the view of the ocean was not optimal. We enjoyed eating breakfast and a couple of lunches out on the patio but were bothered by other guests walking by...no privacy. I would definitely ask for a second or third for unit in the future. The upholstery and carpets were stained in the main living area. For $800+ per night, that's not really acceptable. Also, apparently a guest in another unit was smoking cigars. The smoke and smell filtered into our unit through our bathroom vent. We called to complain because we thought the units were non-smoking. Maintenance came to make sure there was not a safety issue and apologized but nothing was done to remedy the situation. The smell was awful and our clothes reeked of smoke when we got home.
I would definitely recommend this resort for a quiet family vacation. The accommodations are lovely and the relaxation factor is top notch.
Ask for a unit on a floor other than ground level.
