This past June 2009, we had a chance to stay at Sapphire Beach and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. I decided to investigate renting through a private owner, and after much searching settled on a 1 bedroom – 2 bath condo, unit #C-308. The whole rental process went smoothly, and when we entered the code for the keyless entry, any trepidation went away. The unit had a clean comfortable kitchen, and both of the bathrooms had been updated. A LCD TV upstairs and downstairs with the feed provided by DISH, kept us up to date with all the Hollywood drama. The balconies were a favorite gathering place for early morning reading, breakfast, and lunch. If there was one thing that needs improvement, and I am sure this would be true for the vast majority of units at Sapphire Beach, is that the sliding glass doors need replacing. However, I know that won’t be a cheap project, but the current owner is in the process of doing just that, plus they just had two new sofa beds delivered.
The grounds of Sapphire Beach are better than I remember when I last visited back in 2007. Still, the resort itself could use more vegetation. There are some blighted areas, but in my view Sapphire Beach Resort is a diamond in the rough. Having the beach literally at your doorstep is such a plus, and the pool has been recently upgraded, and one still can’t beat the views from the underwater bar stools. As many have pointed out, t he pool café is shuttered, but we had no problem going to Fungi’s on the Beach, a five minute drive away. If one does some research, and understands that this is not the Ritz, you will enjoy yourself.
The owners of C-308 were thoughtful to have a contract with the onsite dive shop, and beach chaises and floats were included in the rental price. This is not true for all private owners. We enjoyed lounging around but I must admit that the beach at Sapphire has seen some erosion. Hopefully, this is temporary, but if it stays the way it is a true gem of a beach will no longer be with us.
If one is going to Sapphire Beach or any other place to stay on St. Thomas I recommend renting a vehicle. It’s so easy to zip over to Red Hook and to take the car ferry to St. John. Overall, it’s clear that the owners of the resort are trying to update Sapphire Beach. If one goes through a private owner I’m sure you will find your stay a pleasant one.
