“Overall Good Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

We booked our stay through bookit.com. As we had never been to the USVI, we used maps to determine how close it was to some of the island's attractions. Tripadvisor reviews were largely favorable as well.

Pros: The resort has 3 pools, 2 restaurants, a fair amount of parking if you rent a car, on-site shuttle service to some local venues, on-site activities desk & supply store, WiFi, on-site kayak & snorkeling rentals, on-site sailing reservations & pick up, maid service every other day, beach towel exchange program at front desk, plenty of maintenance staff during working hours, night security, laundry area on-site, & a variety of rental choices with great views of Water Bay at most of the rental units. It is in close proximity to Sugar Bay, ferry to Cruz Bay, & the nightlife of Red Hook.

Cons: Like an earlier reviewer mentioned, one restaurant & pool was closed. Though we had a car, we heard another guest complain of not getting picked up at the local beach, Lindquist. The maid service is largely just a towel exchange program as we found she didn't clean the bath or sweep the tile floors unless we asked (which she didn't like). Our unit didn't have a safe at all & was the unit that was robbed only two weeks prior. The person manning the activities desk doesn't come on til 10am & even then is often busy with kayak rentals, so we had to wait over an hour to get service (messed up two of our mornings). The WiFi is only available at the reservations lobby, so we had to add a data plan so we could get online service in our room. We ended up researching/booking our activities ourselves. They do have a slow PC to print out airline boarding passes but it is NOT complimentary... at a rate of .50 per minute!

Tips: The units are all individually owned, so the best deals are through the owners directly. Try www.vrbo.com to locate available units. Each unit is stocked by the owner, so you may find some of the amenities you need or not. Also, the resort is quite large & rocky, so expect a lot of climbing/walking if you opt not to rent a car. And, though it's close to "town," it's not in walking distance. So, though the units all have kitchens, you'll have to pick up your supplies & food at a market. The only item they supply is toilet paper. The closest market is on Smith Bay Rd about a mile (past) north of the ferry.

“Perfect for us!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

We would whole heartedly recommend Villa East to you! We rented right from the owner Alan in E6.The pictures on the home away site show the unit beautifully. Alan was very helpful prior to the trip and responded quickly while in St. Thomas. He has lots of good information. The kitchen was great saving us cash by making our own meals. We loved hanging out on the wrap around deck watching the sail boats go out, the sea turtles swimming in the bay, not to mention the large iguanas sunbathing on the branches nearby. This was a very quiet & tranquil resort. We will stay here next time and there will be a next time! This unit felt secluded because of all the foliage and was the closest to Jack’s Bight Restaurant on the water. Jack’s is known for its wings, but to tell the truth we never tried them. We were too busy eating the mussels and the fresh fish prepared by our personal chef Todd. Be sure to use the beach and swanky facilities at the Sugar Bay Resort next door (without spending the bucks to stay there). The beach at the resort is very small, not much of a beach - but nice. We snorkeled a little in the bay, but St. John has the best snorkeling. We rented our car from Zip Rentals. The roads are pretty steep, not for the faint at heart, but that didn’t stop us. We tried to get to as many of the bays and beaches on both islands that we could, staying away from the main tourists’ spots (especially the main town of Charlotte A - yuck - too crowded!) We enjoyed the beach at Hull Bay on the Northwest side. East end restaurants were great. Everyone is very friendly. On St. John - Trunk Bay is really beautiful and great for snorkeling; get there early, there is limited parking. We heard Waterlemon Cay is the best place to snorkel, but you have to hike in about a mile to get there. If you have time, be sure to travel to Miss Lucy’s Restaurant on the East side of St. John; It’s only a fifteen minute drive, but very hilly (just like St. Thomas). Next time we will rent a zodiac from Noah’s Little Arks that Hawaiian Mike told us about on St. John to really see the beaches. We spent one of our days on the Morning Star sailing to Honeymoon Beach - fabulous! This is the best way to travel around the islands - you have to get out on the water! Captain Dave and Josh treated us very well. We would definitely do this again! We took the ferry to Virgin Gorda in the British VI and went to the Baths. It was amazing! Huge boulders made caves that you could walk and climb through that opened up to beautiful beaches - bring your snorkel gear. The ferry only runs twice a week, cash only. Enjoy.

Room Tip: book with Alan in E6

“Would never stay there again.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

I have stayed in many hotels in a lot of places including three other Caribbean islands. This place was by far the worst.
Good:
-The one pool that was open was quite nice and had a beautiful view.
-The balcony around our room (E2) was fantastic.
-The rooms have full kitchens and they included a pint of local rum on check in (a very nice touch).
-Jack's Bite had a fantastic staff and it was very enjoyable to have drinks so close to the bay.
Bad:
-The property is in terrible disrepair.
-One of the pools was closed and that was not advertised.
-There is only one restaurant on property (there were 2 advertised)
-They charge $4 a day for a safe (which you'll need!)
-A room in my party was robbed. The security manager laughed it off and was overheard saying "They're pretty upset but it's no big deal." It took a great deal of effort to get the front desk staff to call the police to create a report. Only after dealing with the woman on duty for 2 hours did she call in a manager to take care of the problem.

“Nice and relaxing!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

Just came back from a week stay for our anniversary. With all things in life, this property has it's good and bads.

The goods:
- We rented straight from the owner and stayed in unit E6. Alan (the owner) was a pleasure to work with and this unit had everything we needed, was right next to the pool, Jacks, a soda machine (which is useful since it's only 75 cents a pop) and access to walk to Coki beach
- The most amazing views ever
- Front desk was able to help with anything we needed and trust me, we called with lots of questions but they never made us feel like we were annoying them
- Hotel shuttle was a life saver cause it was way too hot and our unit was way too far from the lobby. we used this service so much, the drivers knew everything about us!lol
- Jacks is steps away. Gets tiring pretty quickly but hey, the food was still good
- 3 pools on the resort. We had one a few steps away from our unit and we were in it every day and only one time was someone else in there with us. So basically, the pool is all yours :)
- The resort activities desk was very helpful
- Beach chairs, floaty, snorkel gear all included. (although the beach chairs and floaty may have been just my unit, not sure)
- Stop by the activities desk for a binder of menus for almost all the restaurants on the island
- LOTS of iguanas and lizards, if you like that sort of thing
- Activities desk had a computer and printer for when you're ready to print your bording passes to go back home, which was nice. It wasn't free there was a small fee per minute and fee per page printed. You think you can get it done and printed in about 3 minutes but of course, the connection is slow and you end up being on it for 10mins (hmmm maybe this should be in the bads list lol)

The bads:
- Everything in the resort binder was WAY out of date
- The Aggave Terrace restauarant is closed, which we really wished it wasn't so we could have other food options.
- The snack bar was a joke. Such a sad, sad excuse for a snack bar. It was basically expired chips, chocolate bars in the fridge and over priced sodas. Real sad!lol
- Some of the areas in the resort are a little beat up, like the laundry room feels like a sauna, the concrete on some areas of the floor were a safety hazzard, but honestly it's not much of a big deal YOU ARE ON VACATION, relax a little!
- Although the activities desk and lobby were helpful, they closed pretty early and sometimes even at its open hours, no one was at the activities desk. I believe the shuttle stops running when the front desk is closed, which forced us to do everything before 6pm. I could be wrong though, there was one night we saw the shuttle at like 10pm and we were very confused!lol
- Yeah we saw a few ants but anyone that's been to the caribbean knows they will always be there. Don't be a slob, clean your dishes, leave no food or alcohol out and you will be ok...it's that simple
- Free Wifi in the lobby however, I didn't see proof of it as I could never connect
- Although Jack's in there it is CRAZY expensive. $16 for a burger??? Never in my life!

Can't think of anything else at the moment but all in all i had a great time. I think it all depends on what room you get and whether or not you are very uptight. If you don't let the little things bug you, you will be ok here. We visited when it was the off season so for us, there wasn't much to do in the area and every thing that was there, closed early. I suspect a different time of year would have been more upbeat and had more things to do.

Room Tip: (there is no spa, I made a mistake and clicked the button and then couldn't unclick it) E6 is...

... dont be out of shape and expect great senic views. Our suite had a stunning view of the bay and St john, but it was a 200 foot climb from the beach / dinner / bar to the room (and it wasnt chilly outside! :) they have a shuttle that will take you everywhere, but wheres the fun in that. The activities desk was fantastic, they found everything we wanted to do when we wanted to do it. TAKE YOUR PASSPORT! You dont need it for st thomas, but if you want to voyage around a bit, diving with sharks in only an island away in the British V I.

And dont forget... sunscreen your back when snorkeling! (ouch!)

Cant wait to get back!

Room Tip: A cab ride from everywhere, but worth the seclusion, very safe to dive in Coki Bay (although the loc...
