“Disappointed at first but got better!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

We transferred our timeshare to the Elysian Resort and were told that we we getting an upgrade once we got there. What they failed to tell us was that the upgrade was at an older looking facility, Blackbeard's Castle, which had a restaurant which only served breakfast.

After convincing the person at Blackbeard to call the Elysian back we got a room. We then found out that the reason then sent us somewhere else, was because they had overbooked.

The Elysian is all a-la-carte. There is a fitness center, which you have to pay extra for. If you want internet, then you need to use it in the office. Otherwise it is over $200 per week. The Caribbean Fish market restaurant was wonderful. They need a better menu at Sangria's.

Although the grounds were kept well, the beds need new matrices and up to date televisions.

Bring lots of money with you!

We've been to the Elysian twice now, and returned because we loved the convenience of the location on a calm bay (great for letting our toddler play at the beach) and the pool and two great restaurant options. We got a unit in the building closer to the tennis courts this time (because going up and down the hill with a stroller was a killer last time with a one year old.) We love the grounds, and very friendly staff, but the resort has some improvements to make to make it perfect. For starters we awoke the first morning to a loud noise next door and no water at all. Apparently the desalinization pump went out and it took several hours to repair it and restore water (albeit very low water pressure, and terrible temperature control in the shower. It went from very hot to cold and back and forth. Not a good experience when trying to bathe a sandy toddler, with no tub either.) The water situation improved, but only by receiving many water deliveries from an equally loud truck right outside our deck sliders. Understandable considering the water problem had to be fixed, but still, it kinda ruined the peaceful view and quiet. The noise was also coming from the younger guests next door one night. It was late and their voices were so easily heard through the lockout unit doors that open into the adjacent unit. It was manageable with a simple knock on their door, but just a heads up that if you're a light sleeper it will be a problem. We knew going into it what to expect, and honestly the service seems to have improved since last year, but the beds are still very uncomfortable. It makes a visit to the hot tub very necessary to work out the kinks. Unfortunately, the temperature of the hot tub was very often scalding hot. Hot enough to cook a chicken! We could've used about double everything in the kitchen. There were basically only two of everything. We cooked breakfast every day and several lunches/dinners in our unit so it would've been helpful to not need to run a half-empty dishwasher everyday just to have clean utensils, not to mention we had a kid with us, so we needed at least three of everything. Also, a non-stick pan is essential (every unit could use one of those!) So, we love the location, the beach the pool and the restaurants, but there were things we hated about it too. Got a great deal on last minute points reservation through Wyndham, so we took a much needed vacation. However, we may try a different resort next time, because the beds are just killer although the location is fantastic. The staff are really nice and very helpful, but the issues really seemed to be at a level beyond their ability to fix immediately.

Room Tip: Stairs are necessary everywhere, but if you have a stroller or wheelchair you must ask for a unit in...

For the first time traveling to the USVI, the Elysian was an excellent spot to stay at. Nestled in the SE corner of the island it was extremely quiet, clean, and romantic. The resort is perfectly located within a 5-10 minute cab ride to Red Hook, where there are a bunch of good little shops and bars as well as where you can catch the ferry to St. John ($6/pp). The Elysian is also only a $10/pp cab ride to downtown where there the street vendors are and more restaurants and bars.

The Elysian also has two restaurants on site; Sangria's and the Caribbean Fish Market. We didn't go to the Fish Market because they are only open for dinner from 5-11pm, but heard nothing but good things about it from other guests at the resort. We did go to Sangria's a few times for lunch and liked the food, service, and of course the sangria. The only drawback to Sangria's is that it is a bit expensive.

A few tips about the island:

1) Try to haggle with the cabbies.
2) Coki Point beach is absolutely beautiful and the snorkeling is fantastic.
2.a.) It's not a bad idea to bring your own snorkel gear unless you are OK with renting gear from an one of the many islanders at the beaches.
3) If traveling in to town, do not go around 3:00pm on a weekday as this is when school is letting out and the city becomes gridlocked.
4) Duffy's Love Shack (in Red Hook) is an awesome bar.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with an ocean view... it is beautiful!

My husband and I stayed at the Elysian Beach Resort 12/8/12 thru 12/15/12. We had a wonderful time. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Our room had 2 queen beds, microwave confection oven (which was great), toaster, coffee maker, a decent size frig and freezer, and all the utensils needed for in room cooking. Our room was clean and well stocked with coffee, tea, shampoo, etc. The staff was friendly and very helpful. We especially enjoyed Kristin at the pool bar and Karen at the beach bar and grill. The food at the beach grill was amazing. I can't even pick my favorite meal as everything was delicious. The drinks were incredible too. We only had appetizers at the main restaurant there in the bar area. They had great happy hour specials and they were very good too. The beach is nice and had plenty of chairs and lounges. They had activities to do as well but we didn't participate in any of them, as we wanted to just relax and hang out. Others we talked to said they enjoyed them though. We walked to the neighboring hotel to check it out. It was very nice but too fancy for us. We felt much more at home with the people and the atmosphere at the Elysian. I would highly recommend this resort and would definitely go back.

After reading all of the reviews for the Elysian, we were extremely skeptical. We stayed there Feb 2-9th with our 2adult sons and their gfs. We own timeshares and "exchanged" for this one. Each couple had a king size bed/ bath and small kitchenette. They were comfortable with enough room. My husband's and mine were in letter A since I struggle with hills, but we had a view of the pool.
We rented 2 cars and were very happy that we did. Initially they were useful for transportation from the airport picking up groceries at "Cost-u-less" for reasonable prices. Then we used them to get back and forth to the ferry to St John, spending time in Red Hook, and traveling around the island. We spent 3 evenings at "Latitude 18," a local beer open air beer garden with some island music.
Trunk beach on St. John is gorgeous, the "CAT" catamaran trip was a nice intro into boating and snorkeling, and the "New Horizons" boat trip was amazing (800-808-7604). For about $100/p they offer a trip to 2 beaches on St. John (10a-4p), snorkel equipment, delicious lunch, unlimited alcohol, and are great hosts. By far, our best day.
We ate at Sangrias several nights and enjoyed the food/price. Please don't forget to make reservations for the "Caribbean Fish Market." Our first eve there we walked over and asked to be seated, but were treated with disdain when the host found out we didn't have reservations (the place was barely 1/2 full). Hey, at least say "come again!" Not a great first impression, but we did eat there one night and all had a good meal.
Any issues that we had with the Elysian were promptly addressed and the staff courteous.

Room Tip: Upper level rooms, in general, have a better view but are further from the beach.

My wife and I stayed at the Elysian Beach from Feb 23 to March 2 and we had a wonderful time. The room was nice, clean and we had a great view of the pool, beach and bay. There were a lot of stairs as the reviews point out but it was never a problem for my wife and I and we are 50+ in age. The higher up you are, the better the view so stay away from the first and second floors if possible. If you have any concerns regarding this property, forget them and enjoy a great vacation. You can walk to Lat. 18 and Red Hook but I would advise that you try it in the daytime only. I hope this review will ease your mind if you are concerned as it really is a wonderful resort.

My wife and I do a lot of time share trade outs and go all over the world. This time we got the Elysian and I have to stay it was pretty darn good. We spent the week here and my brother was at Bluebeards Castle (I’ve stayed there before) and I can only say in my opinion elysian was better. Nice pool to hang at, great beach right there a pool bar and resort tiki-bar/restaurant 100ft away. My brother and his wife actually spent most of their time with my wife and I at the Elysian. Many have complained of the $22 per day electrical fee……..well get over it. Nothing on St. Thomas is cheap and I’ve heard from American home owners there that their electric bill is over $1,000mo. WOW, I can’t imagine. And even if it wasn’t for electric, $22 per day for a great pool with lots of Iguana’s around, a great beach, pristine grounds etc. etc., well worth it to me.
