“Not a place for a girls trip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013 via mobile

We just got back from Sugar Bay last Friday. There were 3 of us girls just looking to relax, use the spa and sit by the pool. The reason we did not have a bad experience was that we were determine to have a great time.

The wait staff at almost every meal was short with us. We were afraid to ask for things like ketchup or a sharp knife as even bringing water to us seemed like a chore. It really seem that they were under staffed and cut way back on hours as it was their slow time.

Our room was very standard and dirty. There was mold everywhere in the shower and on the deck. When the maid came in. She rinsed out our drinking glasses, wiped them off and then presented them as clean.

When we wanted to go places like the beach, it was very hard to get a straight answer on the cheapest/fastest way. They insisted we take taxis at $10 each, but the Safari got us most places for $1.

The restaurant situation was crazy. They have 5 restaurants but only one is open at any time. One night they put a row of trees down the middle of the Manor House and called it 2 restaurants. When we asked about what the table next to us (literally an arm's reach away) we were told we couldn't order it as it was for the other restaurant.

They also advertised a swim up bar which was never open in the 5 days we were there, but not sure if I would of sat at it as there was mold all over it.

The physical state of the Island was beautiful. The water was crystal clear, great weather and white sandy which was why we went. We will probably stay at St. John's next time as many locals told us it was a better location.

I just returned yesterday Sept 25 from Sugar Bay, Let me just tell you, EVERYONE and EVERYTHING is AMAZING!!!! if you go there with negative you will receive negative. Ive been to St Thomas several times, I usually stay next door at Point Pleasant, I walked over there during my trip and was disappointed that the bar Jacks, formally Fungis wasn't open. Just sayin...... Everyone, from walking in at check in and every morning, afternoon, and evening and even the saddest day (leaving) there was wonderful. The main point is respect! Good Morning, Good Afternoon and Good evening and remembering you spent money to be in those wonderful people's HOME go along way.Any questions Im here to answer.... My deepest and highest respect goes to ALL that are employed there. My room was awesome, air conditioner worked, no broken beds, sinks, all light bulbs worked, no roaches, no ant bites, NO WORRIES OR COMPLAINTS! Hi to Kish, the omelette man, who offered me a place to stay if I wanted to stay ( paying rent of course lol) Hi to Cora, Claribel, Tameka, Carolyn, Josh, Ms Webster, the managers, housekeepers and ALL who that made my trip SPECIALl!!!! You ALL will be remembered and NEVER forgotten...... I WILL be back..... ASAP... Hey Kish you got that room ready yet? (wink)....... You WILL NOT be disappointed in staying here, keep an open mind and embrace the love, respect, and joy in being in Paradise..... :-}

I did my research and read all the negative reviews before still chosing Sugar Bay. I was a little apprehensive at first but boy am I glad I didn't pay attention to everyones pickyness. We loved the place. We're saving our money to go back. We went during their off season, so it was like an all couples resort and not crowded. The views, the food, the people, the snorkling right off the beach, the intimacy of the resort, the iguanas, all inclusive, etc... I could go on and on. If you are thinking of chosing this place... do it! You won't regret it. Just remember, life is not perfect and neither or hotels. If you expect a 5 star hotel, go to one.

Thank you Carolyn (one of the bartenders) for making our first day one of the best days!

Room Tip: Save your money and get a bay view. Every view is breath-taking. We enjoyed the ocean view at brea...

Let me first say, that the Guest Service Manager Natasha Gittens was AWESOME!!! She took care of us from the moment we arrived until we left. The hotel staff was awesome, we loved how warm and caring the staff was. The rooms were excellent and extremely clean. The pools, beach, activities available and food was excellent. The best part was the Couples Dinner on the beach, it was a perfect ending to a perfect couples getaway. We will be returning to the Sugar Bay Resort. Monty and Donna Collins

Room Tip: Our room was on the 3rd floor with an ocean view - it was awesome.

We had a wonderful time. The ocean view was breathtaking! I loved our room layout, it was very spacious, clean and the balcony was designed so it is very private, a wonderful romantic place for my husband and I to sit and enjoy the view. The food was amazing, you can eat at almost every hour and the options are different every day. Anything with fish was terrific, and the stake was good too. One night there was crab claws as an option on the salad bar! Yummy. And if you need a late night snack the turkey wrap had a delicious spicy dressing that was so good I wanted to ask the chief what it was. The staff was always friendly and more than helpful whenever I needed anything.

Room Tip: The ocean view room is a must have!

Great place to lay your head while you're exploring the island. Only did the breakfast but it was worth the convenience of not having to start the morning chasing food. Hit up Red Hook via Safari Taxi, take the hotel shuttle to the bottom of the hill and walk out to the road and to the left there is a little place to sit and wait. It's only $1 each (taxi is $5 each) to get to Red Hook or $2 ($15 via taxi) to get to down town/shopping. You do have to catch a taxi back though because they only run one way. And check out Groupon, they have a great deal going right now for the resort.

Room Tip: Ocean view is well worth it, we stayed in the 230 block.

We purchased a three nights stay at the Sugar Bay Resort & Spa hotel via Expedia. Once we arrived for check in, we were told that there was no room available and that they will relocate us to another hotel just for the first night. While we were waiting for our cab, we noticed a group of people that had arrived after us and was able to get a room. We went back to the front desk and asked for clarifications. We didn't understand why there was no room available for us but they had one for the group that came after us.

The manager on duty told us that the selection was random and based on luck. We requested to speak to the general manager and they finally managed to find us a room that they claimed was newly renovated, but the room was still under construction and horrible. There was a ladder sitting in the middle of the room, the bed was broken, the mattress did not have any sheets on, half of the room didn't have electricity and they were roaches curling all over…

We went back and showed them pictures of the atrocities we had just witnessed. They assured us accommodations would be made first thing the following morning for the second night and agreed to refund for the first night. The hotel mentioned that they would not charge Expedia for the first night and that we will be moved to another room first thing in the morning. We did not get to move to another room till around 6 pm the following day and I never got the refund.

We have contacted Expedia few times, but they were unsuccessful in resolving our issue.

This totally ruined our vacation and we missed several planned events for having to deal with this issue when arriving.

To sum up, Do Not Stay at this Hotel…
