After reading all of the reviews I was EXTREMELY leery on staying at this resort. To the point where I called to cancel and stay at another. Turns out everyone was wrong! It was beautiful!

We stayed in a Bay View room which had a gorgeous view. The bed was comfy, the sheets were changed everyday, the bathroom area was cleaned up everyday also. We really liked that the room had a small safe, and refridgerator. That worked out nice for locking up our valuables, and taking a few beers back to the room.

One thing when you are there is you need to remember you are on VACATION and on ISLAND TIME. Everyone there works at their own pace so be patient and try to relax. It is well worth it in the end. We learned to order 2 drinks at once! If you drink fast enough the other one doesn't get warm or melt! For beer, if you like Corona try the Carib, I drank this all week there and never got sick of it. Unlike regular domestics like Miller and Coors and Corona.

We chose the all inclusive which was definitely the way to go. We saved all of our receipts and added them up the last day and it averaged out to be around 1+ full day(s) of free food and drinks for 2. The food was good. Our favorites were the Manor House breakfast buffet (everything was always fresh), the Iguana Grill or the Ocean Club Bar for lunch, and for dinner we ate at the Manor House every night. We chose not to try the other two restaurants down by the pool for dinner just because we like the Manor House so well and there were different specials every night.

Now on to the beach. It was perfect! There is a large cluster of rock right when you go into the ocean but I didn't find it rough at all just had to take my time walking over it. If that is a problem then you just have to walk to either end and there are no rocks there. Snorkeling was nice. Not the greatest but Coki Beach was too busy the day that we walked over there. If you are interested in going over to Coki Beach there is a path that takes you right there. It's about a 10 minute walk with MANY worthwhile beaches on the way especially at the abandoned hotel. Also over by Coki you will find Coral World and a place to rent jet skis and they don't make you have a guide. Definitley was one of the highlights we saw stingrays and sea turtles.

Transportation is VERY expensive if you choose to leave from the hotel lobby. By walking down to the hotel entrance you can catch the dollar taxi that takes you where you need to go. We used this taxi several times going to Red Hook for fishing and dining. By the way if you can put together a group of 4 to go fishing it was a blast. We caught a lot of fish including tuna, gar, mahi-mahi (dolphin), grouper, barracuda, and the best a Great reef shark. We went through Bite Me Charters and it ended up costing us $250 per couple for 4 hours of fishing and drinks.

Everyone down there was extremely polite and helpful especially when we found out our luggage was lost! The worst! But the staff did everything that they could to accommodate us.

We definitely want to go back only for more than 5 days next time! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me I also have MANY more pictures.

Oh and the stairs are NOT that bad! They end up helping you out in the long run after a long day of cocktails and food at the beach!!

“We Fell in Love With This Place”

After reading many reviews on this place I was a bit confused. People either loved it or hate it. I went with 5 friends and we all fell in love with the place. I was very leery about an all inclusive vacation but we found that it was a great deal. The staff was very friendly; the drinks were nice, strong and plentiful. The food was good. Not the best in the world but I wasn’t expecting that. There are 4 different restaurants each offering a nice variety of food. The staff was very nice and friendly. Yes there are a lot of stairs everywhere but the only flat spot on this entire island is the airport. There are shuttles to the pool every 10 minutes but I found that all the walking helped me not gain much weight. The 3 pools were very nice and clean. There were plenty of chairs and the ocean was beautiful. Yes there are rocks which make it hard to walk out into the water but they are only the middle, just walk to the edge of the beach to enter and exit the water and you will have no problems. The casino was a bit small but let me tell you the machines were HOT. The person I went with won the jackpot 2 nights in a row. The rooms were very nice and clean. I think every room has a beautiful view and I mean a BEAUTIFUL view. Overall we all fell in love with the place and are looking forward to go back again. By the way, watch out for the Iguanas. They mind their own business but they are known to bite if you get to close.

“Wyndam was nice but could find better (or perhaps different)”

Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa

May 9, 2008

My husband and I spent a week in April 2008 at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort. This resort doesn't compare to Mexican all-incusives (AI's) - falling just short in price, service, and resort design/ambiance. It does however, provide beautiful views, a decent beach, and excellent food (although the options tend to be limited). It also offers nearby access to the ferry to St. John (where you can easily find hiking trails and fantastic beaches to snorkel from). We didn't need bug spray as other reviews stated - and the rooms were nice - marble countertops, tiled floors, spacious bathrooms and a nice view from the patio. The steps to the beach/pool were no big deal - we didn't take the shuttle once. I never ventured to the spa or fitness center as I jogged the fitness trail most mornings - a little boring but not bad. The nighttime entertainment was terrible.
If you want an AI where you can party by the pool all day and dance all night, I would not recommend this resort and would instead point you to some of the Mexican resorts (we had superb nightly entertainment at the Aventura Spa Palace!). However, if you are interested in finding pristine beaches and some adventure on your own - along with the convenience of an AI, I *might* recommend this hotel. We ventured over to the Secret Harbour resort only 5-10 minutes from the Wyndham - just to experience their beach since I had debated on which resort to book. I personally would have preferred the Secret Harbour (no AI) to the Wyndham for their beautiful beach (good snorkeling) and low-key atmosphere. My husband, however, prefers a larger resort and the AI so we ended up at Wyndham. Overall I was satisfied because the goal of my trip was to experience the National Park trails and snorkel the many beaches on St. John and it was nice to return to our resort to a good dinner and a comfortable bed at night. It would have been nice to have better snorkeling at our hotel; however, I found enough to keep me searching the waters off the beach for an afternoon. So, I'm still searching for that ultimate resort (for us) - an AI with beautiful grounds/rooms and superior service (a swim up bar is always nice too) AS WELL AS a pristine beach with plentiful snorkeling and outdoor activities. If you know of just the resort, please drop me a line - thanks!

“Many, Many Issues”

Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa

May 6, 2008

My wife and I stayed at the Wyndham form the 29th of April through May 3, 2008. The resort itself is very beautiful. The beach off of the resort is ok but small and rocky getting into the water. The snorkeling is so so but overall it is a trip that my wife and I will not be repeating.

We did the all inclusive package and it was a good thing. Even though you do the all inclusive you still see what every meal would have cost you and if you are considering not doing their AIP think twice. The average breakfast was almost $50 and every dinner was easily pushing $100 or more depending on whether or not you order wine with your meal.

The food quality is less than I expected considering the reviews of the resort and to top it all off my wife and I had breakfast at the Manor House and found that our breakfast burritos had several spots of mold on them "not a small spot either". We took this to the Executive Chef and he said nothing and could not explain how such a large spot could be missed during preparation and or why their products being used would be close to their expiration dates. We took this to one of the managers and he could not provide us with an explanation of how this could have happened and tried to convince us to be quiet with a bottle of wine, some Gouda cheese and a box of crackers. Needless to say I am less then pleased with the level of service that my wife and I received.

The gift shop tried to over charge us for the gifts that we purchased for our family and friends by nearly $300 and this was not discovered until we checked out on our last day there. After further review of the final bill we owed nearly $1500 in charges. We reviewed the bill and found several other instances where we had bought sodas in the gift shop "only because the machines throughout the resort had nothing in them including water" the total for two sodas was $3.26 but the charged us $326 instead. This was a simple mistake as they call in each ticket, but 4 times, come on. Finally we proved to them that they had made a mistake and cleared the balance. This makes me wonder how many people may not have checked their bill and just paid the balance.

There was also mold growing behind the sink in the bar near the casino. If you make the trip walk in to this bar look at the double sink and the multicolored mold on the wall behind the sink.

I have been on several vacations throughout the world and I say this with extreme disappointment that this is a trip I will not duplicate!

“Nice clean room with awesome ocean view”

Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa

Apr 30, 2008

My travel agent booked a regular room but told them we were honeymooners because she said they often upgrade your room.
And they not only gave us a great room with an ocean view, they also left us a bottle of champane. The room was nicely decorated and clean. It was quiet and private, room 150. In fact, noone can see you on your balcony-all you see is ocean. There is no beach below so it is very private. We loved it.
Nice wood furniture, tv, tile in bathroom, marble counters. Bed was VERY comfortable. Soft down comforters, pillows and sheets.
Housekeeping was quick & helpful when I asked for more towels. One day housekeeping did not show up to clean the room until 4 pm, we were in room so we just had them bring us extra towels. Not a big deal. The toiletries were Blue Spa from Bath and Bodyworks!

There is a mini fridge and coffee maker in room as well as a safe. Ice machine and coke machine right down the breezeway. The resort grounds were beautiful and lush with flowers and trees, a pond, wildlife. Ducks, doves, white egrets, iguanas. There was a mama cat with two babies we fed everyday, that live on a cliffside in a rock den. The resort sits on a big hill and you must park at the bottom and take the hotel shuttle up. This was never an issue, we never had to wait more than 2-3 minutes. You can also take the shuttle to the spa and poolside, beach, and two of the restaraunts, which are also at bottom of hill. Or walk down the 99 steps. Even so, it is a long walk from most rooms to the front of the resort where you catch the shuttle. Not good for disabled or people who have trouble getting around.
The restaurants, if you are not all inclusive are expensive, and I found not worth it. You can eat cheaper elsewhere. Breakfast buffet for two with drinks cost us $40 and tip. At Molly Malones, it was only $17! At one place for dinner, we paid nearly $3 for a coke and same for tea at dinner per glass. No free refills! Service was poor, they were out of all the items I wanted to eat one night. But we ate out mostly. There are too many good places to just eat at the hotel!
We thought the pools were great. There are 2-3 and waterfalls. Right below them is the beach. It is a bit rocky but if you go to the far left end, it is not. Pool tables, towels provided although the lady often wasn't there so you can't get them. Very nice clean poolside restrooms.
At check in, there was about an hour delay, and noone explained to us where anything was and we wandered around lost for about 30 minutes before we figured out where everything was and how the shuttle worked. The desk was not helpful.
At checkout, I discovered they charge $1.00 per LOCAL CALL>be advised!
One good thing is the bellhop guys take your luggage and you, on a golf cart to and from your room when checking in/out. And then down to your car. The spa is all hype and over rated. It is very small and mediocre. Not worth the cost if you ask me.
But overall, it was a good place to stay. Clean, nice room, great view, beautiful grounds.
