We visited Sugar Bay Resort during the slowest time of year, late August. Our first impression was that it was totally dead. Maybe it was the time of year or maybe it was the Tropical Storm (Isaac) that just passed through, but the hotel seemed to be less than 10% occupied. There was nobody at the restaurants, nobody at the pool, nobody anywhere really. It felt like we were staying at a tropical version of The Overlook Hotel from the Shining. That said, we got a terrific deal through AA Vacations and also got $200 worth of special food, activity, and shopping vouchers from the USVI tourism group. The vouchers worked like cash with no minimum purchase, but that really has nothing to do with this hotel.
Pros about Sugar Bay Resort:
-Above all else, the value of just a room was pretty unbeatable; we used a package, but it ended up costing us a little over $100 per night, per couple in our own King bed room, with a bay view
-The rooms were clean, had a mini fridge, and the views were wonderful; the A/C was very good and there was a ceiling fan above the bed; we were very comfortable; sink drains were slow, but nothing else to complain about
-Most of the staff was friendly and helpful; Kris, the shuttle driver, was particularly kind and went out of his way to take us direct to car and wait for us when we arrived
-There is a nice stadium seating movie theater with two recent movies showing each night; although we did not actually watch a movie there, it would be nice for families
-The pool area was nice, well maintained, and had ping pong, pool, giant jenga, swim up bar, and easy beach access with an outdoor shower
-The iguanas and cats do roam freely around the resort and they are cute and harmless
-Last but not least, the snorkeling at Sugar Bay was actually quite good! We snorkeled with our own gear at 5 or 6 highly rated beaches and Sugar Bay is comparable. We swam around the rocks on the north end and there is a great variety and abundance of marine life. We spent hours out there!
Cons about Sugar Bay Resort:
-Restaurants. It seemed like most were closed and I cannot imagine being stuck at the hotel with an all inclusive package (at least during slow season). There was literally one option available for breakfast - a $20 buffet at the Manor House. It was mediocre. Selection was about average, but many of the hot items were only luke warm. It does come with an omelet bar and the chef does a nice job, but the rest is lacking. Also has mimosas and bloody marys included if you like to start your day off that way. There is a tiny little cafe there and you can buy a muffin or a breakfast sandwich as the only alternative to the restaurant. It is not part of the all inclusive package though. Ultimately, we left the resort for every lunch and dinner and ate light snacks for breakfast or got a breakfast sandwich that happened to be quite good when the staff would stop talking on her cell phone and actually serve you. I don't know about the other restaurants because they were not usually open and we left the resort. There are GREAT options all over the island so why waste your money on hotel food???
- I have seen other reviews about the beach being bad and rocky. I don't really get it. It has plenty of sand, nice views, and equipment for water sports available. Yes, there is a narrow area to actually enter the water, but that is hardly a reason to complain about the beach. The beaches on the island are almost all free and there several very close to Sugar Bay. If you like a huge sandy beach, then visit one for a day or two.
Bottom line: We had a great time in St. Thomas. We made the most of it and truly have no complaints. We got a great bargain at Sugar Bay Resort and I would say we got more than what we paid for. We enjoyed the people, the food, the views, and the island as a whole. Rent a car, explore, and venture out. Save money on your hotel by staying at Sugar Bay and spend your money on all of the great things St. Thomas has to offer.
The Bay/Pool view rooms were perfect blend of value and views and very easy access to walk to pool/b...
