We recently returned from this resort after spending the week of 7/13 - 7/2014. Upon arrival we did request a building close to the pool but were informed that they were booked. We ended up on the 4th floor of the St. John building and had a spectacular view! It never got old. The villas are as you would expect at the Marriott ... well-appointed and clean. The trip to the pool/beach area was a three elevator ride, and once you got used to it, it was no big deal. I would have taken the stairs more often, but they were not conveniently located. We rented a car and never had a problem finding a parking spot. The pool is exactly as pictured on the web site ... large and inviting and right up against the beach. There is a volleyball net and slide at one end, and steps and the restaurant/bar area at the other. We did not experience any issues getting a place to sit at the pool or the beach, which is often a problem at other Marriott Resort locations.
The beach is small but refreshing. There is coral and rock getting into the ocean, but as long as you are careful where you step it is not a problem. I spent many hours floating on an inner tube enjoying the scenery and water. You can snorkel right off the beach and I highly recommend it as there is lots of coral, rocks, plants and sealife right in front of you! I did not see anything of interest over by the dock, but there was a lot to see right off the beach and around the rocks on the right side. Oh, and there are lots of iguanas all over the property ... completely harmless. There is a hammock tucked away behind the chairs and trees on the right side of the beach if you are looking for a place to retreat and read your book.
We did take a walk over to the Reef next door just to be nosy and there are some spectacular views there as well ... lots more iguanas too and bigger! We walked to the end to the Morningstar resort to check out Havana. The beach there was not calm and serene but rough with waves. So, if you are looking for some body surfing, head over to that beach!
We shopped for groceries at Pueblo, Kmart, Fruit Bowl, Food Center and Cost U Less ... depending on where we were. I think Cost U Less had the best selection and prices on booze. This is like a cost club though, which I didn’t realize, so everything is in bulk. All of the other grocery stores are the same with respect to pricing, but I liked Food Center the best, and Fruit Bowl. Oh, and there is a bakery right next to the Fruit Bowl where we got some rolls and bread. Food Center is in Red Hook, a little bit further away.
We rented a car so had no problem getting around the island and exploring. We did a day cruise to the BVIs with New Horizons II, spent a day on St. John, and went to Magens Bay and Lindquist Beach on St. Thomas.
