“Great Catamaran/ Snorkeling Tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2012

Spent an enjoyable week at the Marriott Frenchman's Cove (timeshare) throwing nasturtium petals at indifferent iguanas and digging toes into white sands on turquoise beaches. A rental car is highly recommended for exploring both St. Thomas and St. John. Our concierge, Cora, was very helpful making arrangements.

We also recommend the catamaran half-day boat trip ("The Cat") for snorkeling and viewing amazingly beautiful fish, coral and endangered turtles. The captain, Joe, and his crew, Ryan and Grady, were professional, spirited and fun. During the 30 minute cruise back to the Marriott, they served crudités, chips, and poured unlimited rum punch … recipe for world peace.

For day excursions from St. Thomas, St. John features gorgeous beaches plus a generally higher quality of life often for less money.

Room Tip: The 4th, 5th and 6th floors of the "St. John" building had wonderful views, but probably a...

Long time Marriott Timeshare owners at Grande Vista in Orlando and have been to many different resorts but first time here to get Frenchmans Cove. I thought the property was great, location in proximity to downtown and the other beaches were great, water taxi can take you into town and runs all day. Small Evening STar beach is quiet and we had no problems getting a chair. You also have shuttle that runs over to the Marriott Hotel and Frenchmans beach with all their restaurants and pools. We did not rent a car and with all the othe resorts and beaches you need to take a cab to get there,no big deal as we planned on it and although it was as much or more than renting the hassle of driving up and down the hills and driving on the left was not worth the risk just for the 2 of us, plus to eat and drink at night. All in all the stay, the rooms and the facilities were very good, not excellent but very good. I highly recommend the stay if you have not been to Virgin Islands.

Major Pros and Cons and Tips:

Pros - nice restaurant at the other facility, Havana Blue (see my other food reviews) and nice Sandbar beach bar there. Great pools at the Marriott Hotel and tennis courts if you play. Relaxed staff and market on site for buying limited foods to cook like breakfast and lunches. Everything is high in Virgin Islands so if you are concerned about price you probably should not go at all. Conceirge staff was very knowedgable and had some great recommendations to eat and for the trips. The shuttle between facilities ran regularly with rarely more than 5-10 min wait. Also getting a cab was painless there, they called cab at front desk and within a few minutes they were there. TIP - cashless resort, charge everything to room which is great not to take credit cards and cash to the beach. CON here - you have to open up a separate charge at the Marriott and the Havana Blue and Sandbar by the beach club does not honor that if you go there.

TIP - take the one day cruise to BVI on Stormy Petrel or Pirates Penny - ask for Captain Rick, a great trip and see my other review on this one. 8 persons max for great time.

Cons - conceirge staff while helpful had to refer you to their Adventure Booth by the pool to book your trips and they were woefully understaffed, took forever to get in front of them. TIP - use the Marriott hotel Adventure booth, much better staffed and same atractions. AVOID the big boats and the large crowds and do the more personal trips.

Other Tips - see my restaurant reviews for places to eat and avoid. But on the resort outside of Havana Blue was not too impressed, food average at best at the other facilities.

Room Tip: St John Building is newest and fine since hopefully you will not spend time in the room but definite...

We have been time share owners at Marriott Grand Vista resort in Orlando Florida for the past 8 years. It has been a wonderful experience and we highly recommend Marriott if you are considering a time share purchase. We have visited many of the Marriott time share resorts; Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, several in Hilton Head, Aruba, two in Hawaii and Branson, Missouri and now St. Thomas. All of them excellent properties. Our week at Marriott Frenchman's Cove was exceptional - the resort is not too large or small. We were in unit #326, second floor, corner suite, Totolla building with an awesome view of Charlotte Amalie Harbor, the city and cruise ship arrivals and departures. We had no other rooms below us, just tropical vegetation and the rocky shoreline. We value privacy and solitude - that's just what we got. The view was to die for, the room spacious, clean and well maintained.

If you have never stayed at a time share resort, it's important to remember that they are not a five star hotel resort. We do not expect hotel service. We have always expected to experience more like a condo experience. If you are anticipating a five star hotel, with maid service and all the other attentions then make reservations at Marriott's Frenchman's Reef hotel which is part of the Marriott St. Thomas resort complex. Note that we haven't stayed there so we aren't make can't offer a rating of quality or service. At the Cove, we expected and received only one "tidying up" from housekeeping staff about half way through our week. This isn't a cleaning but just a refreshing of amenities. Otherwise, we called them if needed and they responded immediately.

The Cove restaurant is just okay...not great. We dined there on two nights because it was convenient. The also dined at the restaurant at Frenchman's Reef. The food was better but not excellent. The service also not excellent. The wait staff was not very attentive after serving the initial drink order. They were very friendly, however.

We always attend the time share presentation at each Marriott resort. We normally take the 10,000 Marriott points but they do offer a $100 resort credit which is also usable at some local restaurants. The presentation is normally very low pressure where they simply explain the details and let the property sell itself - unlike any other brand time share we have attended which can be very negative experiences. This time, however, the Marriott St. Thomas presentation was not up to the usual standard of quality. Our presenter was fairly new and did not thoroughly understand the new Marriott Time Share Points program. He confused me and my wife until a more experience manager stepped in and cleared things up. This is the first time we weren't impressed with the Marriott time share presentation experience.

The beach at the Cove is small but the view is beautiful. It can get a little noisy when lots of children are in the pool but it is a family resort and to be expected. We didn't participate in any of the resort activities so can't comment on those. The resort staff was friendly and available but not intrusive. We like that. St. Thomas would rank right up there with our Marriott Maui, Hawaii experience. Maybe even better.

We rented a small SUV from Dependable Auto Rental for the entire week. (Dependable took good care of us. The vehicle was a small 2006 SUV in only fair condition. However, once we saw the other vehicles on the island, it blended right in.) Driving on the left is a little strange at first (especially the left turns) but, contrary to my worries, we quickly adapted. Just have your passengers say, "think left", every once in a while. It helps. The speed limit is only 35 mph on the island so, even though there are many hills and turns, it really was a piece of cake.

We used every minute of our week exploring the St. Thomas and St. Johns beaches, shopping and other activities. Here is one of the most valuable tips we received. Remember this: Determine how many ships are in port on each day. If there are more than 2 ships in port, remain at the resort and enjoy your day. Once the ships disgorge the passengers, everything is crowded from shopping to the beaches. Visit Charlotte Amalie for shopping when at least one ship is in port but no more than 2. Visit St. Thomas beaches and travel to St. Johns on a day with no ships in port. You will be glad you did.

One last thing: Groceries are extremely expensive; gallon of Milk $8, butter $6 per/lb., etc. We packed steaks and hamburger meat in 5 lbs. of dry ice and transported in our luggage (yes, that's acceptable). The steaks were still frozen solid after 10 hours travel time. We also brought our own condiments, i.e., salt, pepper, garlic, etc., as well has hamburger buns (breads expensive too). We used the grills provided at the resort which was better quality and cost a lot less than the restaurants we experience in St. Thomas. Do your grocery shopping at Cost-U-Less. Prices are better there.

We loved St. Thomas. We will be back some day soon, I hope.

Room Tip: I believe all rooms offer the same floor plan and are of equal size/quality and face the harbor (at...

I have stayed at several Marriott timeshare properties and this was a let down from the others. To begin with, this resort does not accept cash, only room charge or credit card which we were not made aware of prior to our arrival. The "concierge" was 30 minutes late for our designated appointment time and was unaware of the policies of the property and only really interested in trying to get us to a 90 minute long presentation to purchase a timeshare, no thanks. The pool area is small but nice and so is the beach area. Some of the staff were exceptionally nice, unfortunately that was not the case for most of them. I am truly disappointed with this property and would say if you have a choice go to Aruba and stay at the Ocean Club for an awesome vacation.

Just spent a week at Frenchman's Cove. Our Villa was on the third floor with 180 degree views of the water. The villa had two balconies and a large picture window in the living room. Parking was handy with a garage right below the unit. The resort has limited common areas and with a small pool and small beach. The restaurant was good but had limited menu. Entertainment nightly was a plus. The Marriott Hotel next door had five restaurants, large pools and a great spa. We had full use of the facilities. Request a building close to the water and ask for at least the third floor or higher.

I have been to a number of timeshare locations and this was right up there on the list. Terrific villa with stunning views and very comfortable. Great beach and pool...and the best staff treatment anywhere!

Room Tip: Our villa was in the St. John building...the furthest from beach and pool. Would have liked to have...
