“Best Relaxing Bar in Marriott Complex”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2014 via mobile

Love this place! We have been coming to St.Thomas for 8 years now...the Sandbar was a recent addition...only a few years old. It fulfilled a definite need. You can sit back & enjoy the sound of the waves crashing to shore while enjoying your cocktails. The drinks are top notch (all made from scratch...including the fresh ground nutmeg on you painkiller). We found the bartenders to be fantastic!! Shoutouts go to Kim,Ashley & Brittney...they went out of their way to greet & chat with us. They gave us island suggestions etc. We visited them 4 times during our 10 day stay because of the wonderful treatment we received. I just read the previous reviews....to say the least I am very surprised, drink prices are no more expensive than Miami or New York. Maybe they should have went during happy hour 2 for 1. Each time they did mention that the gratuity was added when presenting the check. We were so happy with the service that we tipped extra in cash! We also love Havanna Blue--we enjoyed the 7 course dinner...Executive Chef nailed it! Yes it is expensive there but you do get what you pay for! We can't wait for next year to see everybody again! ;)

“Rip Off”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2014

Sandbar

IF you order a burger for $18 you have to add $3.50 for French fries… The food is just good nothing special and the drinks are a total rip off: $12 for a simple Margarita or any other drinks. The only plus is the nice view and the setting. Our waitress at the bar was very nice.
There are many other places on the island with nice view, nice food and drinks for half the price.

“Fresh food at Marriott”

The tables by the Morningstar Marriott lobby serve amazing lunches. We had great burgers and coconut fried chicken with blueberry sauce.

“Skip the awful Sand Bar and just go upstairs to Havana Blue instead…”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2014

Let me start by saying that I love Havana Blue and am one of it's biggest fans… the Miso Sea bass is amazing, as are all of the martinis I've tried over the years from the cocktail menu.
The Latin Trio and Calamari are favorite apps. I've been dining here since it opened. The atmosphere upstairs is beautiful with the lighting, curtains and decor. Go to Havana Blue! : )

Now, for the Sand Bar… what could be an amazing spot is completely underwhelming… each time that I've tried it.
For years this lobby bar space was vacant and not used by Marriott which seemed like such a shame. I was so excited when Havana Blue opened up the Sand Bar.

The previous trip was alright, maybe a 5 out of 10. The initial bartender taking care of us was inattentive and not very friendly. Then the manager took over and turned it around by being friendly. It was a nice night. (I'm pretty sure her name was Margaret, she was great!)

This trip it was awful. I brought friends whom I wanted to share my favorite place on St. Thomas with… It was our first day so we chose to just sit downstairs at Sand Bar for drinks and a light dinner by the water instead of the more formal/full dinner experience upstairs.

Setting- Instead of hearing the waves (about 30' away) or even some nice music- two tv's were blaring Motorcross. One of which was a giant screen. It's important to note that there was not one single person in the area where the large screen was set up. Not one person watching.
And we were the only table anywhere near the smaller tv. (See photos) It was unreal and made no sense at all.

Food- The plastic plate version of the Latin Trio at the Sand Bar is laughable. Maybe it's because they needed to find a plastic serving piece, but it seriously had a teaspoon of each dip. Much different from what you are served upstairs, for the same price I believe.
The plantains that it comes with used to be long pieces that made a better presentation and were overall better. What we were served was a small dish of stale plantain chips mixed with something else. Very disappointing. The stale plantains are likely because there is now a new prep kitchen down on the terrace that prepares the food for Sand Bar this year. I'm sure they aren't being stored properly being down on the beach instead of up in the proper kitchen.

The little tacos were good, but you do need to order three, although they are priced per item.... ($8 or $9 each) and you're not allowed to mix and match. It seemed confusing- it's likely better to just price it at $16 or $24 for the tacos and include 2 or 3. Our server, Alex, was also super clear about not being able to mix and match, even though it seemed like a reasonable question to ask when they were priced per item. A friend had the burger and said it was really good- so probably just stick with that if you go.

Drinks- Drinks are only served in little clear plastic cups, whether it be an expensive glass of wine or a martini… little plastic cups. Alex, our server, explained in no uncertain terms that this is because it's down by the beach.
I don't believe that it's an actual rule and think it should be changed immediately. For one reason, the martini glasses are metal, not glass, so there isn't a risk of broken glass. Also, Coco Joe's has tables that are actually closer to the beach and they serve in real glasses and on proper plates.
Get nice plastic wine or plastic martini glasses at the minimum- better solution would be to order more metal martini glasses- thus giving a touch of the Havana Blue experience downstairs as well.

Service- Our server was named Alex and she was either on top of us asking if she could remove plates, as if there was a wait for the table (there were a couple of people at the bar, no other diners at any of the tables) …. or being short/rude in answering questions… it was very unpleasant and I was frankly embarrassed to have brought my friends to the "lite" version of one of my favorite places.

Overall, skip Sand Bar and just go upstairs to Havana Blue.

“Very small quantities for very high price.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

You are paying for a presentation and location near the Marriott, not for food. Food is good, but definitely not worth the price.Take a cab and get some real food at a decent price.
