This is the ONLY place on St Thomas to get Mexican food, if you go anywhere else you will be sorely disappointed. Trust me I live for good Mexican food and I have tried all of the Mexican places on St Thomas.
My first sign when evaluating a Mexican restaurant is the margarita. If you can't master a good margarita just close your doors. Greengos house margaritas were just great, made with quality tequila not some cheap well crap and fresh lime juice.
Next up chips & salsa, it had better be homemade, fresh, and have a good mix of cilantro and some heat, but not overwhelming. Greengos nailed it again with a nice smoky chipotle salsa that I could have eaten up with a spoon and the other early sign of a good restaurant warm fresh homemade chips.
Note* if you ever see a Mexican restaurant serve chips from a bag, don't order dinner get the check and leave. Chips out of a bag are costlier and obviously taste worse than fresh homemade chips so it is a clear sign of laziness and general lack of caring with no attention to any kind of detail. Not to mention a sign of financial stupidity so you have to assume the rest of the menu will be more of the same with frozen out of a bag food.
Now onto the food. So many Mexican restaurants fail when it comes to the food because they miss the little details like warming or pan toasting the tortillas and having fresh ingredients. Greengos nailed it again. The fish in my taco tasted like it just had been pulled from the ocean across the street from the restaurant. They had fresh ingredients and the food was authentic Mexican not some dumb downed Americanized taco bell version. The taco tortillas were homemade and perfectly lightly toasted since Greengos clearly knows that soft tacos shell does not mean a cold, wet, mushy flour tortilla that just came out of a bag.
The homemade hot sauce Greengos had was truly delightful, and if my waitress hadn't been so attentive and the bottle hadn't been so big I would have stuck the bottle it in my wife's purse and ran. They need to start selling that sauce.
The environment was cool with Mexican art on the walls in a little alley with exposed stone walls and some outdoor seating. Just a great place to hang out with friends. And Greengos was way better than that other Mexican place in Red Hook I had the misfortune of trying. I should have heeded my own advice and left when the margarita arrived but that's another story.
Well done Greengos! Keep up the good work and good food.
